yep, small HI-Q is expensive
The silicon to make em is dirt cheap, however they gotta make a profit and pay off those costly processing machine's. Less handling/fussiness involved with the larger one's.
You can find the mini-tv's for ~$50 though at pawn shops, Ebay. The $250 one is looking attractive.
That was a good idea by the way.
Just have to work on the details. Must be a zillion camera's and lenses all over the world. And the camera doesn't need to work.
This way it comes with a convenient tripod mount too!
If I pick up a small panel I might give a go at this approach. The tripod mount and the C-mount are really convenient!
Will you actually try this now or are you just tossing idea's around? Seem's like your going the OHP way now.
Please post here for this approach or any other "small" talk/idea's, ha-ha.🙂

This is something i want to do if i can find a cheap (well cheaper) lcd panel.........anyone know what the res is of the lcd panels found in the viewfinders for digital cameras is? There's a ton of those out there, but i dont know enough about them
my guess is that they are REALLY low.
did a quick check on olympus' website, and they say 114,000 pixels. which is roughly 487x234.
once again, really low resolution to do much with. i checked pretty much all models, and they all have the same LCD, even the $1,600 model.
i checked canon too, dont hold your breath, its the highest i found, topping at 120,000 pixels, too bad the camera costs $4,799.

eebasist said:Well guys I was told to post here. I am currently building a large panel OHP. But here goes my other idea
What about using a dead SLR camera as a frame for a lcd and a cheap zoom lens that allows you to adjust the image size very easily....all you need is a light source for the lcd.
any thoughts....too bad those lcd's cost so damn much.....there has to be a cheaper way to get the panels.....there is no way those small panels cost that much to make
Good idea, dead SLR is definitely easier to find than dead projector. Why not give it a try? Try using a calculator LCD panel first. If you can project the numbers out, please do post your result in the forum.

Re: MrLoveDIY,
I mailed them, no reply yet. US components, Russians Components all MADE IN TAIWAN.. hehee ... should be cheap.
SushiMasterX said:Welcome! I wonder how much those cost?
I saw a little 2" mini-tv, too. Wonder how much. Do you know where they hide the prices? ha-ha!
Seem's like LED's are still very expensive because you need so many...but, last forever! They should make a giant LED for us! 😎

C'mon eebasist, we can make our own $100 viewfinder! We don't need nobody to love us!
Ha-ha-ha!
Welcome to the killer's lair, (okay this is gonna be a little silly for Saturday-night-live folk) I can't believe I'm doing this, but I think it's fun! I wish I was just the reader though...
Hear ye! Hear ye! First Tribunal Saturday! Alllllll, rise! (Judge Fartman enters)....
Well, those 1.8"-1.6" viewers are around 300x240 and less, typical for viewfinders (not much more required really for photo judgement, at a distance). But, if you haven't seen or played with that res PROJECTED, than you don't know what your talkin about or know what you can get from it. Not to mention individual acceptance level's.
But, the kick-arze thing about this camera idea eebasist has IS that several things you would want for a mini-projector are there already, from a cheep-azz piece O' notin in grandpa's closet, or from the PX or P & M's Dingle-berry pawn shop!...YOu got yer lens, you got yer panel mount, you got yer tripod mount, you got yer stable setup! Alll, cheap as heck! Built, Tonka-Tough too! ...Immaterial really! (So's this post actually.)
If your willed from Howard Hughes than you can go the $700-SVGA route for the panel. If not, then the .7" 3/4 VGA, 180k res $250 panels look pretty sweet. Good for movies, especially Wide-screen. Hey! Vertical doesn't go much higher than 250 pix because it's not necessary in a NTSC/PAL signal...And, if you had notin' you could use your imagination if you're poor and hungry in nofoodlandia! That's for the extreme 'idea', mind you!
In the wide view it's really all about what you intend to do...what your goal is. We all have our own idea of what "that" is and what's fine with ourselves. Some things are set in cement and some things are up to our individual taste's. Don't be so DIGITAL all the time, is what most ANALOG folks think! There is infinite range between 1 and 0. DIGITAL folks have to use a analog idea as their basis!...then hope to build to that. I'm kinda (he-he) gettin hippy with this, but some will understand about individual perfection and other's will only see altruistic perfection. Lot of grey in-between, really!
to biz...
Co'n, he's not going to actually buy the camera that has the highest pixel count to get the panel! He's just lookin to find what is made commonly and what may be available separately at a reseller. His question open's a door and allow's others to decide what the range available 'out-there', is. Jeez, don't be such a complicated dude. There are a lot of grey's between Black and White!..... Constructive, constructive, constructive...that's the key! Didn't you see T2?! he-he-he " Okay, we're tryin to be constructive here!"
I love you! ha-ha-ha! Do ya wanna make sand-castle's wit me?
Peace, love, lcd right's!!
I like your picture's of Gladiator. Can you post the one with the lion reaching out and swiping? A 3 second "mov" would be sweet right now!
thankyou, mr. bacardi...I mean mr. sushi m-a-s-t-e-r-X, hiccup!
Ahhh! Saturday in the us of a.... Will I be embarrassed tmrw?

regarding the viewfinders in the digital cameras, i wasnt assuming he was gonna buy one, i was just looking at what a $5K camera had. you know, both extremes. one would assume that the cheapest one would have the worst, and the most expensive one would have the best. so i looked at both, and found out that there were all pretty much the same. meaning, doesnt matter which you get, they all got the same thing in em.
so, yeah, i was just saying, the best only has this...
as far as gladiator goes, i tried getting a video screen capture of when the tiger swipes his (her?) paw but since i was using a camcorder to capture, too much blur, works best on still scenes, or else ppl would thing quality sux 🙂
i have a small clip on my website from star wars episode I, pod race scene. but its not for quality, its close up, to see pixelation, and motion blur. (which both dont exist 🙂 ) here is the link to my site:
http://www.diyprojectors.com
name a movie you wanna see a scene from on a projector. i can encode it into anything, and i have like 400 movies. just give me a list of them ,and ill see what i can do. im always looking for an excuse to put more on my site.

Correction!
It seems that my panel is actually 185K colors. This i know for sure, I found it in the actual manual for the panel. So, that's at least 16-bit color. It's just odd, becuase EVERYWHERE you look it says its 4096 colors.... Well, I will change my site so now we know. Thanks!

Typical LCD projector layout
I thought that this LCD projector (NEC) layout may help people understand how a commercial 3 LCD panel projector works. Note complicated optical path to get from the lamp and to the 3 panels, one for each color. The 3 existing images are added in the prism arrangement before it exits to be projected through the lens on the top.

Typical Slide Projector Optics
This photo illustrates the optics of a typical slide projecor. Note a bare bulb, in front of the concave mirror, producing a pretty much pointed light source. The light passes through one colimating lens, before it goes through an IR filter (that strips most of the heat from the beam). The light then passes through another lens (making light beam parallel), before it goes through the slide gate. That is the area, where a small LCD panel would have to be placed. This projector is a S-AV model made by Kodak, Germany.
