@EUVL PCM58 is interesting DAC, it was built by @chi0001 #5089 ( #4639 + update #6244) ... he also built the AD1862 and PCM63, he can compare the sound 😉 😊
I am currently amazed from the TDA1540 sound 🤣 I have no idea why I like the sound so much when it's only 14-bit, it will probably be the black magic for which all this nostalgia lives 🤓

A few days ago there was a discussion about AD797, but no one remembered to include part of the text from DS.
Scott Wurcer's commentary on AD797 and AD1862 can also be found on the forum.
It is unfortunately that Scott is no longer at the forum to ask.
But I tried this exact circuit using PCM1704 and OPA1611.
The cap to Gnd actually caused huge distortion in this particular combination.
Removing the cap, and the world is normal again.
Of course I have not tried with AD1862 and AD797.
Only want to say that this should be treated with caution.
Some discrete IV circuits have an input impedance of ~20R, and they still sound very good.
Which is what led us to go with 27R passive IV followed by a 100x voltage amp.
The latter is of course very similar to any MM phono preamp.
So many choices with opamps or discrete.

PCM58 is interesting DAC ....
It is not available NOS from Rochester, etc., only from Chinese sources.
I don't like using components of unknown original.
You don't know whether they are genuine or what they have been through in their lifetime.
The rest of my audio equipment is too valuable to be put to such risk.
If I cannot get it from legitimate sources I'll give it a pass, however cheap.

Rochester and DK (who get theirs from Rochester) have minimum order quantities. So tempting as this is, its too painful...But AD1860 could also be fun (pin compatible with PCM56) ?

Not painful at all if you GB, and order through DK. 😉

Overkill? Unless you have broader e-commerce plans?I was thinking it would be fun to try opening a Shopify
Yea. I've been wanting to try it out for a bit, but I was also thinking that in the medium term if I had a legit business I could maybe convince companies like win-source that seem to have a stock of things like AD1862N-J to sell to me.Overkill? Unless you have broader e-commerce plans?
Win-Source is not a trusted authorized dealer of these AD chips and would not buy from them.
I tried to make a purchase from them a few years ago, didn’t go well. They showed plenty of TDA1541A in stock for a good price, I bought a couple. Got an email the next day saying they were out of stock but could get them from another supplier for 3X the price!
Yeah right, scammers.
Rochester/DigiKey is the only game in town for these chips

I think there's probably enough demand for tda.* chips and others if you're able to afford the initial outlay. But as @Vunce says, stick to trusted sources, nothing will kill a fledgeling business quicker than lost trust.
Rochester is the only authorized reseller of obsolete AD chips.
Not just AD, but also TI, BB, NXP, .... etc.
They get those directly from the manufacturer after EOL.
I suppose Digikey is sourcing from them.
DK is just acting as an agent for Rochester, so that you don't need an accounter at Rochester.
Much easier especially for non-US buyers.
MoQ >250USD still applies.
