Covers that are arguably better than the originals:

Guns n' Roses' version of "Knocking on Heaven's Door" adds a lot to the perfectly good original. As others have said, there are few who couldn't sing better than Dylan, but equally few who could write better. Dylan's songbook will be with us I think for a very long time.

Philosophically this is an interesting topic because high-quality recorded media are very recent innovations. We can imagine what Mozart's music sounded like when he conducted it, but our great-great-grandchildren will know exactly what Bono and the Edge sounded like, long after everyone who ever heard them has made the journey west. Traditionally, "great" music has been that which (like Dylan's) did not rely upon the precise stylizations of the original artist--like a play by Shakespeare, rather than a painting of some lilies by Monet.

I see you are a relatively erudite person..but I cannot resist saying such about G'N'R. I am a buddhist kinda guy. I respect your likings in music. But if I have to hear those overblown knobs destroy that song one more freakin' time..... I'm gonna blow a gasket.

Dylan did it perfect. Exactly right. And I don't even own more than two, maybe three Dylan albums. Not a huge fan. But I got a real soft spot for that tune.

I think both Hendrix and DMB have a better cover than Dylan on "All Along the Watchtower."

But my favourite cover as today is stiil Hendrix's "All along the watchtower"
... the man truly made that song his own.

hendrix covered all along the watchtower
.. so good, in fact, that even dylan liked it
.. he was quoted as saying after he heard the hendrix version
he steered towards playing it like that,
although i don't know how credible that is

Jimi Hendrix, Billie Holiday, Buddy Holly & Janis Joplin.
Only a few of all unique musical talents,
to die too soon.

Imagine (john lennon) what much more they would have been able to give to us 🙂
More than what they actually gave.

Such classics are well kept as a treasure of modern pop/rock music.
And digitally remastered to present to us moments of outmost listening pleasure.

Jimi Hendrix had such musical intelligence & instinct and such technical guitar skills ,
he even could be able to make something extra
out of doing greater a fresh cover of:
...................................................................
- Britney Spears - 'Oops I Did It Again'
- Johnny Logan - 'What's Another Year'
- David Bowie - 'Life On Mars'
...................................................................

....... and this is not very easy to do
... but with Jimi, I have no doubts whatsoever

Another artist, that has done 'a million' covers
that are pretty goood !!!
is
Whitney Houston
As long as you have a voice and can use it,
you will deliver, too:

Whitney Houston, some of her great hits:
😎 😎
----------------------------------------------------

02. Greatest Love Of All
03. One Moment In Time
05. I Will Always Love You
11. Didn't We Almost Have It All

----------------------------------------------------
😎 😎

A really talented performer
will almost never fail in delivering - in adding something extra
to a piece of music or a song.
Can be one
- Jimi Hendrix
- Whitney Houston
- Loius Armstrong
- Billie Holiday
- Janis Joplin

and

- Dolly Parton 😉 one of my special favourites, nowadays
... I did have ro rethink & rediscover this woman
... she can sing, really!
... she has got that special thing about her
... that makes her shine on stage

... True Star Quality ... will always last
... while other comes and goes ..

😎 Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen will always remain 😎

Life on Mars reminds me.... Happy Rhodes does a nice cover of that, and several other Bowie songs.

Here's Space Oddity

Do a search for her on youtube, she does covers of Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Duran Duran, Queen, the Bee Gees.. and of course her own songs. All excellent stuff.

Has anyone heard Richard Thompson's live cover of 'Oops I Did It Again' -- fantastic stuff. It's on 1,000 Years of Popular Music
There is also a great cover of Abba's "Money money money".... very funny and a little edgy.

I've gotta get that album. Speaking of RT, I know a singer named Mary Arden Collins that does the loveliest version of his "Dimming of the Day" live, unfortunately she hasn't recorded it yet that I know of.

Beck

Beck's cover of Daniel Johnston's "True Love Will Find You in the End"

But then again Daniel J is pretty hard to stomach for most. There is a CD of his material covered by some great artists. It is called "Discovered Covered".

Cheerio,

Shawn.
