I don't think anything large enough to head to Mars will be using just hydrogen and oxygen as fuel. Even the space shuttle had

I think humans will ultimately get around the solar system to mine and do stuff. But the idea we will have colonies on Mars seems fanciful. Gravity played and does play a huge role in shaping the evolution and physical development of Earth bound organisms. Imagine being conceived and born and raised on Mars. Your bone density, muscle strength etc will all be so compromised that coming back to Earth at some point is out of the question. Then there’s the radiation issue. I read somewhere that the top 150mm of the surface of Mars is sterile. So anyone living there has to be in a shielded environment or underground.
A far more likely scenario is that Mars in the distant future is populated by an army of robots that mine it, do science etc. Humans may go there to make supervisory visits or get a project going, but permanent habitation, unless we are trying to create a parallel species, seems ‘Muskoidial’ ie fanciful nonsense. If we want humans to settle another planet, it will have to have very similar gravity and a magnetosphere, or be very cold so it can hang onto its atmosphere.
Which brings me to aliens and a potential alien invasion. Why would aliens try to take over a living, populated planet full of belligerent warmongering bipedals and run the risk of all sorts of problems like disease, possible deaths on their side and massive damage to their hardware? Surely it would be much easier to send robots to a dead planet and just mine it for what they needed? Zero risk and zero interference from anything. Just help themselves and when done, move on.

What if asteroid comes and destroys earth, who the robots serve then? Same for aliens, they would likely spread out to increase likelihood of long term survival. First into local solar system, then to another, then to another galaxy, to survive long time spans before some catastrophy wipes all out. It shortsightedness not to strive for it now when it is still possible, so go Elon! Only public figure whose vision spans further than their own nose, and it's not just talk but actively making it happen. Perhaps the colony would not succeed, but still there is some legwork done, like lowering price and speed to get stuff to orbit, gaining data and improving technology which eventually is required to get anywhere from here. Reaching out from solar system would need further science advancement, everything is too far for humans to travel at current speeds. How about AI and robots with backpacks full of human genome to reach some more distant places? Or advancements in physics beyond general relativity that would enable long span travel in short time?

and maybe move all of the manufacturing that pollutes our environment there, run by robots as you suggest. It would create a whole new transportation industry as well.
This would give real meaning to the idea that Mars exploration is a worthwhile endeavor, not just simply for the purpose of exercising our ingenuity.

Lateral mosfets are new to me. 😀 I do conventional EE stuff in my day job and dream of traveling around the solar system. 🤣 I saw the premier of 2001 A Space Odyssey as a 10 yr old child here in Boston, had nightmares for weeks. It seemed reasonable at the time that we would have a world similar to that portrayed in the movie, imagine my disappointment. 😆
