Consider the Elon Musk Mars Fantasy

Colonizing Mars does seem like some kind of a science fiction phantasy, but then, so was going to the Moon. Humanity will get there someday, but given how long it took to go back to the Moon, I see no chance Mars colonization will happen in Musk's lifetime. And before we dream of terraforming the planet, we'll have to learn some basics here on Earth since our efforts so far have proven to be an unmitigated disaster.

I well remember the Apollo moon landings and watched the first landing on the moon live on TV. Had we continued to devote the resources to the manned space program that it took to get to the moon I am pretty sure we would have made it to mars and beyond by now. I am not sure how many here were old enough to remember, but it was a time of immense excitement; then they cancelled the Apollo program and essentially the manned space program. I never expected it would be nearly 5 decades before someone picked up the gauntlet.

I hope I live long enough to see it happen, but I am old enough that unless it happens in the next decade or so I will probably be preoccupied with more earthbound concerns.

I would not be surprised if Musk goes to Mars at some point, but I doubt very much he would stay. I once regarded him as a champion of innovation and science, and that is undoubtedly true, and I still think the Tesla stunt was pretty cool. (Orbiting earth) Unfortunately I am at this point quite otherwise disappointed.

Worth repeating. It would be interesting to see how history remembers him.
