... No one looks at a microwave oven and says "wow that is beautiful", but we tolerate them in our kitchens if they have the right color/finish to blend in. Same should be true of speakers.

Hey, we have a beautiful KitchenAid in wall microwave/convection oven in gorgeous stainless steel with the matching 30" convection oven.
And I the pipe and smoking inside .I love that one can mess with tone controls right there at the listening seat.

My first ex had constant headaches so no matter what speakers were there it was no good . The second ex hated sonus faber monitors but loved monsters of a size of wardrobe..At the end she loved money over everything else and some likeable fatsy had plenty of it .
I would just engage the partner in design/ esthetic process making sure you're on the same page. There is absolutely nothing wrong with notion of speakers esthetics complimenting the room

G'day Jim@cowanaudio - I like the floating console/cabinet. Did you design it? I have thought about a wall mounted cabinet like that, but I have been fearful of som heavy guy leaning on it and popping it loose... what attachment mechanism did you use, and what kind of weight limit would make you feel uncomfortable?
Yes, I designed and built the cabinet myself. I finished the Tasmanian oak timber down to about 21mm. Being a hardood it is pretty tough. My biggest concern was actually the strength of the lower shelf, because that carries the weight of the speakers. To that end there are 30 8mm dowels and glue holding the five pieces of the main structure together. The cabinet is secured to the wall with a full length french cleat that is screwed into five studs with 75mm long screws through the 13mm gyprock into the timber behind. I'm not a big guy, but the cabinet had no problems holding my 75Kg weight when I sat on it. I have no concerns of my grand daughter pulling it off the wall. It is very easy for my wife and I to lift it down from the wall, should that ever be required. I lifted the cabinet without doors and speakers onto the wall cleat myself.
The cabinet has a removeable false back that is set forward 50mm. The amplifiers, speaker protection and cables live behind. Only the Flex-8 is visible when the doors are opened.

Yes, nicely done. The application of a French cleat is very appropriate, and the best way to attach this kind of cabinet.
I think this is a way to go as far as esthetics are concerned. I can get some really nice (and convincing) walnut treeroot veneer.
The question remains what to put inside (drivers?) — an active and “wireless” (i.e., no visible wires) system would be preferred, with a sub as a side table. Connecting to tablets and phones. I will also use a CD player but no vinyl, this is for a holiday place by the seaside. Plenty of research ahead…

Very very weird and cheap driver selection even by Visaton standards. FRS 8 or B80 are their go-to drivers for FAST. The woofer... is 28EUR/unit (!!!), and both those drivers are stamped steel frame. For this money it is possible to build proper speaker with SBA PFCR woofer + some random overstock tweeter from the beginning of the list: https://en.toutlehautparleur.com/speakers/dome-tweeter.html?dir=asc&order=price

I suppose it could be built with legs ( I have a pocket door behind part of the wall, so I can't put bolts all across the width.

^ I'm trying very hard to get my wife to agree to put a 2nd story addition to the back of the house. It would house two home offices, mid century modern with a touch of Japanese. I think your design would fit perfectly in our house, it would look great in her home office with her own TV and a simple, but good sounding audio system.
I think I would have to make it deeper though to hold the components... likely 19" to hold the 17" deep components with the cabling behind. It would depend I guess. OTOH, I could easily repurpose what she'd got and that would fit nicely in 13"... including the PC which is a Dell micro form factor... then I could run the cabling to her 34" widescreen and keyboard... hmm.....
I might show that to my wife after all. I can sell it as part of her home office... with Japanese blond wood, a nice tatami floor, large windows.... Dang, I just got an idea... hmm... her room will look nicer than mine.

I'll be darned... she actually went for it. Mind you, her mind has gone from "we don't need that" to "you'll have to keep working a bit longer"... which is MONUMENTAL. She's sold on it now.
I came up with a floor plan, with sliding Soji doors into a 2nd floor, south facing vestibule with a full 10 foot wide window.... my office next to hers and a nice pass through to our current upstairs bedroom. She'll be able to open up the screens into a 6x12 room with plants and window and sunlight. Imagine your picture, to the right, she'll have a large North facing window, about 9x4, TV in the same spot. Desk where you were taking the picture from and to the left will be the South facing Soji screens.
She doesn't need the tatami... we'll see.
The picture of your installation was the clincher.
Now, the budget is 100K.... we don't need plumbing. We already have gas lines up there for the heating and a perfect spot to hold the HVAC furnace and compressor. I already had the romex pulled out a few years ago, so I got six lines... I'll only need four. For HVAC we can do a couple of splits. And to top it off, right behind the wall in my upstairs office I will have direct access to one of the LAN switches.... Sweet!
The floors/roof/deck were designed years ago to hold a pool!!! So, putting a 2nd story is just a matter of walls and roof.
Roof will be flat, angled somewhat to the South. That will drain well towards the street.
To top it off, it will give us the roof to install about 9Kw of solar panels... and the clincher is that I designed the layout 25 years ago when we added to the house.... so it's gonna be easy. We spent boatloads of money then to reinforce the foundation and walls to hold tons of water above our roof.
The question is how much. I figure it will be $200K - including solar panels- when it's all said and done. But being in SoCal... $200K for 500 sq feet is a steal. I figured the existing framework/foundation work cost us $50K years ago, today that would be like $100K.
The only thing we'll lose is a 500 sq foot rooftop patio.... but, it's OK... we have a fully enclosed front yard... we'll move the gazebo down there. And we still keep the central 240 sq foot atrium.. And I'll get my own 14x18 office/listening room, with dedicated HVAC and two AC lines. I might go for 20A lines (fuses, sockets) this time.. the existing Romex is of the 30A kind.
Honestly, your picture clinched the deal... she could visualize the room... ;-)

During the summer holiday season in Australia, I had the opportunity to listen to the Devialet Phantom in mono, and then stereo.
I didn’t let on the retail price, I just let the family do the listening at a Devialet store.
I felt it sounded OK at low to mid volume but suffered from limited dynamic range- it doesn’t sound clean at mid to high volumes. To get 20Hz anechoic, it’s EQed out the wazoo!
They need some other technique / technology to get that desired SPL - the spec is 98/108dB in ~3L/8L of gross (external) volume for the Phantom II/I respectively.
It has large amounts of non-linear distortion and dynamic range compression when playing at live-like levels.
Another example that a spherical cabinet has great technical merit from a directivity and diffraction point of view, (sound balance in 2 planes with constant signal level) but dynamics, non-linear distortion, timing is not accounted for.
A moderate sized under couch subwoofer is a great idea.
Some time ago, I designed some Side firing dual opposed subwoofers, integrated into the custom TV cabinets but never got around to completing its.

Once you cover 40-150 Hz cleanly, it affords you small monitors much more easily.
I didn’t let on the retail price, I just let the family do the listening at a Devialet store.
