I was spending too much time in this forum so ive asked the mods to delete my account. whish theyr refuse and told me they would change my password so I cannot post anymore with the murphythecat account. Why did you change of avatar with a new one in June 2014 ? Very curious to know why / I know just one canadian here who like Dinosaur Jr and have a SD1 !
At Max; Hi, Max Lorenz: as already said, we have to see you in your country, if people could know how beautiful it is, The DAc will come to you !🙂
2 cents...
2 month later, ive opened another account. hehe
as far as im concern. I will likely not even look for another DAC until it break. the sd player is just the end of the road for me. it says a lot as im really difficult normally. the sd player dac is just so natural, it is as good as my vinyl system, or really really close.
I can even fool my friends, I ve done this many time. Ill be playing the vinyl and the sd player at the same time without them knowing. Sometime they would say, damn vinyl is so much better but its the sd player playing.
Mr Murphy..
PP 6B4G, nice.
I would like to ask which other digital front ends you have compared the SD player with.
Thanks, regards and all round best wishes.

buffalo 2 dac
hrt MS 2
musical fidelity Vdac
diyhifimediy sabre dac
fireface 400
nothing too fancy or expensive. Thing is, no dac came even close. all the other dacs all share many similarities with the buffalo being the best. but the sd1 is really a whole other level. like going from 5 to 10. everything is much better. its quite shocking and amazing really. if I was looking for a dac, I would get the usb dac at 1k euro.
Ill ask another guy who has the sd-1 to know his list of previous dac.
cheers

Thank you.
In keeping with the thread, I'd be interested to know about comparison with well implemented 1541A.
I don't doubt for a second that its very good. And for the price probably somewhat of a bargain for an off the shelf product.
IT coupled 6B4G's?
Again, thanks.

not anymore, I dont have speaker suitable for the DHT, and it is not SOTA at all.
Amps are my weakest link. Ill be looking at 50W PP amp for the amphion. I use a class t art0 module which is excellent but only 12 W. the art0 module are the best amp ive used, really transparent but im sure it can get better, but im happy enough with the art0.
Im sure john dacs would compare to AMR dac or the really best out there. Its actually the designer of the AMR dac, thorsten loesch that told me that to go with johns dac. due to using likely the most analog chip, no other designer went as far with the TDA15xx.

Was listening to the AMR flagship dac last week, quite natural and musical...
(Audio note big monoblocks behind the rack. To Shane..finally I did it 🙂
I am sure John's Tda1541A dac is also very good as well. Hope to hear..or better yet.. own one someday 😀

I will not post anything more about this subjeckt here!
A suggestion to an amp:
my_ref fremen edition.
Can be found on DIY if you google My_ref Fremen Edition build thread
I have been through a lot of amps including Pass amps Goldmund clones 6C33 OTL a.s.o. . This is where I stopped.
I was dared by a fellow DIY when I was describing a Goldmund Telos clone (very good amp by the way) to try the My_ref Fremen Edition.
Sceptical a first because I have tried various Gain Clone efforts, but this is not a Gain Clone.
Koldby
PM me to get further information

someone else I know used, before the sd player sd1:
My best dac before the SD was the Wolfsonn from Twisted pair audio coupled with 2 Lundahl output transformers. But it was oversampling and that gives this typical sound.

hi
yeah if I was to build a diy amp, it would be the my ref. I did a lot of research and it seemed to be really good.
I might need exactly that as I need power with the amphion one18.
ill pm you now.

Hi Cheung,
Very similar to the setup at the Adelphi in Singapore.. except the horns there are red!. Really nice.
Your inbox is full, so I'll tread carefully and ask you here.. what was your subjective impression between the AMR and the 'other' 1541A DAC?
Regards,
Shane

I wish...it is a local hifi shop 😛
Sound was impressive indeed..
Hi Eldam,
The latest projects are based on passive I/V conversion:
50 Ohm I/V resistor (between TDA1541A output and GND), passive low pass & treble boost filter, preamplifier. I did not use a series resistor.
This change has to do with inter-modulation distortion.
Rhopoints can be used in the audio signal path, for example as input resistor for (pre) amplifiers in order to reduce amplified input resistor noise.
Impedance matching for audio signals makes little sense. Some exceptions are 600 Ohm XLR and and output impedance matching on tube power amplifiers with output transformer. In most audio applications a low output impedance is used to drive a high input impedance.
John in your design you have no resistor in serie after the TDA1541 ?

Will you say that a wirewound with its so small inductance in the case of the Rhopoint can be used in the signal path of the analogic stage also , or value like 100 to 1 k Ohms in serie after the 2 volts

(for impedance matching with the next input stage; pre, amp) can not be hearable ?

Hi John,
You're ok with exceeding output voltage compliance with 1541A as per 50R I/V?
😉

John, would that look like this? (picture paints a thousand words 😉 )

AHAHA so cute shematic Essigt 🙂
miss the passive low pass filter before the amp... ask to our prefered green Duck Abraxalito to show his own he maid for him own multibit DAC.
remenber something with Marantz cd45 and 2 x TDA1540 I have: "Z filter" as they call it at Marantz: filter with KP caps, some bulk and smt resistors with 3 legs smd amp before a crappy aop as buffer... much better sound after a serious caps work tweaking...the cd reader was one of the good Philips maid ! bought 20 euros on second hand.... never had courage to transform it in 14 bits !
