Babelfish XA252 / Babelfish XA252 SIT / Babelfish XA252 SET

move big donuts away, it's simply nature of the beast

dependency of hum vs. volume is easy explainable with ratio of induced stray voltage vs. transferred to output, but prediction what is exactly going to happen (what at which volume setting) is impossible

again, move big drek away and enjoy in silence, I mean - clean music

How does it sound? Oh, just like all of your other amps.

Edit: To follow up for clarity...

It sounds Phenomenal!

The XA252 and the F4 are at the top of my list of favorites so far. F4 has a bit more punch on the lower end, but the XA252 just beats the F4 in midrange by a tiny bit in my humble opinion.

F4 is all about the preamp..... try a good tube preamp with lots of volts. Maybe you want the sugar.... using the YITCDAF4?

Just odd. No hum before the optocoupler resistor mod. Hum after the mod.

it simply can't be

optos are inactive, same as non existent, as long protection doesn't kick in

so it is, efffectivelly, that you tweaked nothing on nothing

you did changed something in system, thus Iron Pumpkin is getting more nasty inductive magnetic flak from outer world

as I said, distance of Iron Turtle to big ( or not big, but nasty) mains xformers around, is crucial

it's simply nature of it ......... and it can be tamed a little if using steel covers for Iron Pumpkin case

now, external wiring can cause troubles only if using non-screened interconnects ...... which - funny - I also prefer

^ How can you put those two songs in the same sentence? :joker: Just an admission that I happened to like My Sharona.

@birdbox - Niiiiiiiiiice!

Actually, the Hoff LP I got from Randy is well recorded. Hate to say it, because the music is at best "German Pop Metal" which is as formulaic as it comes, but it works well to work out the kinks on a system.

I haven't played it on my upgraded Linn though.

Oh, I like My Sharona... I had a tape of The Knack when I drove across Utah on the 70 when I moved from Denver to SoCal back in '83.

M-m-m-my Sharona
M-m-m-my Sharona
M-m-m-my Sharona
M-m-m-my Sharona

The speed limit was 55 then and the Utah cops were out with their radar... so the only thing that felt like it was moving was the music.

When I drive that slow, you know it's hard to steer
And I can't get my car out of second gear
What used to take two hours now takes all day
Huh, it took me sixteen hours to get to L.A

Yes, it felt like it took us 16 hours just to get to Vegas.... ( It was Thursday ) on the 15. We only stopped for gas and... ( well, it was the early 80s )...

I'm leaving Las Vegas
Lights so bright
Blackjack
On a Saturday Thursday night
I'm leaving Las Vegas
I'm leaving for good
I'm leaving for good, for good

The stereo in the Sircocco was a Panasonic... sounded pretty good, Thank God. I had like 120 cassettes that I had made... Have you ever tried to do 1400 miles non stop doing 55?

Does the B1 Nutube run the F4? I ought to try that. I seem to remember it put out some healthy volts, but not enough...

I like Zappa.

OMG, that guy... Clayderman... that'd be torture mate!

My question about the B1K driving the F4 stands.... will it drive it? I suppose I could pull wires, but it's Sunday...

I sing that along.. but I change the lyrics...

Adios, Au revoir, Arriverderci..

It just sounds more apropos... Right in my office, behind me, I got the Iron Pre Bal -> XA252 MOSFET and CJ ET3SE -> F4.

Maybe I should play Lawrence Welk and see which one sounds cheesier?

...It's Sunday Noon. Woke Up Late. I need more coffee...

The source of my hum at around 14 volume level on Iron Pumpkin was coming from the home theater reciever which I had connected to other balanced inputs on the Iron Pumpkin. Once disconnected, hum goes bye bye. No clue why the hum level was influenced by the Iron Pumpkin volume level.

if you move it away and it goes better, it goes from receiver PSU bad Juju
if hum goes simply by disconnecting receiver signal cables from Pumpkin, receiver is having dirty GND, another emanation of bad Juju

note - in Iron Pumpkin SE, input selector is also switching GND for inputs. so unoperated inputs are fully disconnected

for Iron Pumpkin (Bal), only hots are switched, while all input GNDs are permanent

Svetlana ( Sovtek ) since '93 for me...

I bought a set of Chinese 6550s in, around, '91... tossed them away, then got GE NOS, they were good, but impossible to get after a bit... so I went with the Russkies.

The latest set I got from the factory for my CJ PV9 is also ALL Russian.
