Outstanding work Shin. Have you decided on a final color and finish?
Hi David and thanks.
Spray finish but still not decided on the colour. Have got 5 here that I like so it'll be one of those.
Exceptional work!I was playing with the idea of making something similar to the smaller standfloors, for my ScanSpeak 30w-4558t00 subwoofers, but the curved lines and the lack of a CNC machine made me sattle on Avalon's Isis, once again congrats for the high-end quality work!
That's very kind of you Aircirc. Thanks.
I don't you think you can go far wrong with the Isis. Its a solid design. 🙂

Machine time was quite long compared to MDF but you have to go a lot slower and lighter. I did 8 parts in a day with each taking about 30-40 minutes. Most of that was the engraving - painfully slow.
Thanks Ant. What sort of feed speeds, rpm, and depth of cuts were you using? I suspect it takes quite a while to get all the way though a sheet of the alum.
They're sprayed with clear etch and then regular clear coat. If you don't etch then the paint will sit on top of the alu and flake off eventually.
Ah. Etch! I suspect that's where I've gone wrong in the past. It's not something I've done very often, but I'll remember to do that next time I attack some.
Latest updates on the speakers looking superb BTW.
Cheers Gordon 🙂
1.5mm DOC, 800mm/min and 9000rpm with a 6mm single flute cutter. This is about the quickest you can go if you want a good edge finish. I have had it at 3mm with 1m/min but was getting deflection of the gantry/cutter. Any more than that and I think it would significantly shorten the life span of the machine or you'd start breaking cutters.
You can get by cutting aluminium on these CNC routers and get some nice results with the right cutters being careful to dial in your feeds and speeds but I wouldn't fancy doing it often on larger jobs. Its fine for things like amplifier plates and such though.

Here's a one off design for a member on here. They're veneering the cabinets and painting the baffles.
Drivers are RAAL 70-20XR, SS 15W Revelator and Seas L26ROY.

Did you cut the baffle radii with a big radius-cutter?
Or with lots of passes with a ball-nose cutter?

Thanks for the info. That's faster/deeper than I was expecting TBH. What's the cutter you were using? I suspect my carbide spiral cutters would be capable of alum, but they're 2 fluted.
I've got a couple of (non-loudspeaker) related ideas I'm considering, and I'd love to try them in aluminium. They're small, so I would be happy trying just 1mm DOC, but I'm worried my router may not be too great at 9000rpm.
Small update on the One.20
Nice. I particularly like the sock/underpants support for the front baffle 😀.

The secret to high end audio has been revealed! 😀

Well, it is under the crotch of the loudspeaker, no? 😱

Rhodium plate 'em and folks will lap 'em up. Every pair of loudspeakers will be wearing keks 😀
Not sure TBH. Aesthetically, they look a little "flabby", but I guess that's just my opinion.
The irony is that they appear to be constructed from carbon fibre, but weigh 900lbs each, which is kinda not the point with cf if you think about it 😉.
before someone would think this, i'm NOT trying to accuse anyone from anything. I thought and still think that designwise the Apollo and siblings are damn fine pieces of work. And for the record: I like Shin's much better.
Its getting to my favourite part of any build. Spraying! I've been agonising over colour choices for more hours than I dare admit. Here's the one's that I've settled on.
First is a metallic black, which is a little more interesting than the usual straight gloss black.
Pearl white. For such a simple colour I've had a hard time tracking down the one I wanted. Most of the pearl whites are slightly creamy and I was looking for a clean looking white.
Not so subtle here is a deep red candy tint over a shimmering silver. Looks stunning in the flesh.
And finally a blue pearl.
