I should have brought Patricia Barber’s Companion.
She covers ‘Black Magic Woman’ and the percussion part would have sound real nice on the Jordans.

Ah yes, I'd like to hear more Patricia Barber. I've listened to Modern Cool and I'm not sure about it.. Her voice is quite unique and pleasant.

You should hear some of her vocals on 'cafe bleu'. Talk about a tweeter test!

'Companion' is a VERY well recorded live album. Great version of 'Use me'.
Tool🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 What a band. That thunder on 10,000 days is so real. Addictive stuff. Aenima is the best album though.

And I see it might be an XRCD too, terrific! I love those.
And then there’s the 45 RPM Vinyl release from Mobile Fidelity.
Next year we need a turntable as a source and a location nearer to Dover.

philpoole said:...Sploo, you're right Angel Dust is a great album - although I dug it out a year ago or so and was a little surprised it wasn't as well recorded as I hoped. 'Everything's ruined' and 'mid life crisis' - my word. I just hope they're on my HDD at work this afternoon. I always Epic was a cool single (was that from their first album?).
Epic was slightly later...

philpoole said:My favourite band from the early nineties to tune my teenage angst to were probably Smashing Pumpkins - some of that is very well recorded./Yea, the Pumpkins were great. Not heard the recent album from the partly 're-formed' band, though it's received mixed reviews.
Gish/Siamese Dream/Mellon Collie were great. I like some of the stuff from Machina, but the recording always sounds really rough to me.
philpoole said:Always one to be inventive, I remember Ms. Amos doing a cracking cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit on piano, and she did a Hendrix cover once, where she ran her piano through distortion to mimic his guitar effects...
I have those somewhere. One was on a ltd ed. Cornflake Girl single, and the other was on a single with a pic of a horse on the front... picked it up in Holland about 12 years ago!
SimontY said:...I also have Strange Little Girls, which I don't like very much....
Yea. Never been sure about that one. I do like "Rattlesnakes" though.

*LOL* What I like about Lateralus and 10,000 days is that they plenty of dynamic range - not compressed like a lot of recordings, plus there's lots of subtle stuff you don't hear unless you're using some decent equipment. I was amazed to find out how much bass there is when using good speakers - in passages where you thought there wasn't any at all.
I don't have Aenima... but that sounds like a good recommendation to go and get it. 😉
I saw Patricia Barber at The Gun pub in Croydon a few years ago on a warm up gig. Excellent gig, completely acoustic.
Sploo,
The new pumpkins is ... okay... I think. No way as good as the first three, probably better than most of Adore. Worth a listen if your a fan. Not their best. Has some cracking tracks though.
As you say, its only two of them.

It's worth it for 'Stinkfist' alone. Some songs are more 'concept-y' than Lateralus, heading in the direction of 10000 Days. If you like one you'll like them all IMO.
I agree with the wealth of subtlety to be found, and these guys are incredible musicians - with none of the wankery of the likes of Dream Theater. Apparently they can pull it off live as well.

OT
If all goes well, I see Garland Jeffreys and Brian Ferry tomorrow night. 🙂

I've had a couple of emails about this as well, (sorry if I haven't replied to you all - been busy).
There will be a diyFest 2008, and it will be in the south this time. I have another month or so of real world distractions, then I'll get down to working on it. I may move it to Easter-ish, that way if it runs well we could have another in the autumn. So start building! 🙂

the 2007 Fest was in the South.
England. Scotland doesn't count.
Andrew, if you want, you can organise the autumn one in Scotland. 😉

Scotland is nice, great mountains. Just bring a hat and scarf for the pubs - they don't necessarily heat them! Hopefully off there in a few weeks, and after Xmas, for my outdoor fix 😎

I've spent many happy Summers (& Winters) sailing in the Firth of Clyde and the Irish Sea - Arran, Inveraray, the Kyles of Bute, Mallaig & Skye, all the way up to Cape Wrath (where I spent several summers at John Ridgeway's).
I have a photo of myself from about 20 years ago, sailing off the Mull of Kintyre in February in a blizzard, with a snow-encrusted beard and a big smile on my face!
The West Coast of Scotland is simply wonderful.
