And what did we buy today?

I have bought both the Dyson V7 and the bladeless purifier/fan. The fan has been selected by another member of my family, purely due to aestetical reasons, despite my warnings about some well known weakness. At least I was able to save a significant amount of money by purchasing it used (almost new), because the previous owner was unaware that it is much noisier than a traditional fan with the same airflow. That's pretty obvious just looking at the way it works, and it is well documented online, but people is blinded by the marketing and discover the issue only afther the purchase, the first time they set a normal working speed instead of the lower default. The V7 has been a good experience, and it has become my main vacuum. I've repaired other Dysons and jean-paul is right, the build quality is about the same as most lower cost products. The only redeeming feature are that, due to the popularity, spares are easily available and it does have the right combination of size/weight, suction power and battery life.

...Dyson...if it falls over it would blow into a hundred pieces...

We store the Electrolux on-end. Careful: if it falls over it breaks your toe. The vac can't be hurt.

You don't replace the motor: you could, but rarely needed, anyway another $15 yard-sale vac avoids a truly dirty/dusty job.

The model before this had "turbo" like fan disks, stacked for differential pressure. I finally had to clean the motor on that, hence my preference for new-to-us rather than refurbishing.

EDIT: this image IS the older one; ours is the next-later model.

The root canal treatment never caused me real pain. The fact that I have 4 per tooth did cause pain as 1 was forgotten every time. So despite mentioning and a friendly laughing dentist the same treatment twice .. per tooth. The words "gutta percha" are etched in my mind.

pcan, the Dyson fan I use differently than my large blade stand type with wire cage around it. They each have a purpose and the Dyson is as quiet as I could ask for. The features are also very nice.

PRR, I still have two of the Electrolux units at my other place. The green one is a more squared off body than what you show but it does have the manual spool on the back for the cord. The red one I have has the same squared off body but it has a self retracting spring loaded cord winder built it. The red one also has a power head. I know what you mean about the durability. No question there.

It is plain silly to keep defending the brand while anyone technical that has seen more than a few knows what they are. It would be better to inform fellow consumers of the costs and failures versus the marketing and features before recommending Dyson. That's it.

I really liked old Alfa Romeo cars but I made sure to inform friends that liked my car that they rusted like crazy, kept you standing still at exactly a time when you did not need it and that they needed expensive repairs many times in their short lifetime. That owning one was like being married to a nice princess that turned out to be a witch after a few years but that you at least had great *** for a few years.

Edsyn DS017 only!!!!

Yup, bought two new solder suckers today. Need them: last night when my other sucker broke.

I had purchased a pair of Jonard DP-100 from Digikey because they didn't sell the Edsyn products. I had had it with the cheap ones that don't last, and the Jonard were a direct copy and nearly the same price as the real ones (Edsyn DS017). So guess what? It broke the same way other cheap ones did, the trigger won't latch and hold the plunger back. They failed so quickly that the tips are still good, and they look new.

Normally the Edsyn DS017 will last a few years in my heavy use, and I will go through three tips or so. When those die, they look well used and I don't feel bad. I am annoyed with the Jonard since they cost nearly the same money. There is no excuse for that. I did complain to their tech support people and have not yet had a response.

So, for any of you who use a solder sucker, only buy the Edsyn DS017 or the anti-static model. I have not found any others that stand up like the original.

My silver anti-static Edsyn is still going strong, just used it today, the new tips (black) from Jonard work great.
need to periodically empty, clean/grease the o-ring to maximize the vacuum. If you put your finger on the end and release, if the o-ring holds you're good to go.

Hi jean-paul,
You know, Cal does have a point.

It's okay to disagree, but go easy on the messenger.

I have a V10 as well, but I normally use my Mellie vacuum. That's the best vacuum cleaner I have ever owned, despite being expensive. It is very quiet and very effective. The Dyson? I heard it was very good, and I got it using points on my Visa card. So far it has been good. We'll see how long it lasts. Generally speaking, I use it on the low or mid power setting.

Yes, their advertising drives me nuts! "Digital motor", give me a break. Unless this thing is fantastic and reliable, you won't see me buying any other products priced as Dyson is. But, if this V10 vacuum does last, I will either fix or replace it when it dies.

-Chris

That is quite a better price than the repair costs of my Den-on 7000. I was fond of it but made an expensive user error and brought it to the recycling.

Anatach, the tone is more important than the message in some areas. I am not from such an area.

If you mean Miele, yes those are reliable. Way cheaper than the absurdly overpriced (at least here in the EU) plastic stuff of which I will not mention the name again. Nilfisk and the old Electrolux earlier posted are also reliable but beware as these have no bladeless fans, no fancy "features" and ... no digital motors and chances are that they outlive their owner!
