The upper limit is an app and personal preference choice, i.e. for prosound where the listening distances are acoustically long, you find the best power (polar) response at as high an XO point as practical to maximize HF power handling. For HIFI, you ideally want the lowest practical XO point to minimize the audible vertical offset of physically wide acoustic centers between the LF/HF, so what's the basic details of the app?
WRT sub systems, it's a bit more clearcut since the 817's horn is beginning to roll off around 156 Hz and 'done' around 100 Hz, so for prosound, anywhere in this BW depending on the XO order. For HIFI/HT I recommend stuffing the vents to get a good blend in the 80-120 Hz BW depending on the XO slope order and number/location of subs.
Again, driver selection depends personal preference and the app, so for prosound it's a later model/diaphragm with the most power handling balanced against HF extension desired. For HIFI/HT, my most 'hands on' experience with the large format drivers is limited to the 288B with increasingly lesser amounts up through the 288G in prosound apps since by then most prosound apps around had dumped Altec for other brands, especially the cheaper ones as they became available.
Anyway, the early 288s are superior performers compared to its later variants and according to the Altec cognoscenti, the 299 series is the one to have since it's a 288 and more, so while I'd like to compare the two on a large WG before making any concrete recommendations, I'll have to defer to them as my hearing is such now that even given the opportunity I don't have any faith in it beyond 7-8 kHz.

Beer Garden - Hof Brau?
Is there anything more relaxing than music outside in the sunshine in a garden with time to enjoy a good brew....
Maybe its time to get some wheels under my speakers and "share them with the neighbors" out in the garden

That pic is enough to make me believe in "curbside recycling" ... man, party at your house ... I'll wrestle a couple of kegs of home brew from my brother (past prez of the Seattle Brews Brothers and damn fine brewmeister!) and run for the border...

GM, I am still collecting input and hardware but here are some ideas I am still seriously considering...Definitely hifi/ht, room size 5300 cu ft, medium damped, w/open adjoining staircase & hallway to other living spaces. Listening distance approx 12 ft min. Subwoofer support via twin REL B1's (self-powered with adjustable slope / gain etc.)
Option (1) 817 cabs with 604's in the top position and 515's in the lower position. Three way. Other than cabs, no parts yet.
Option (2) 817 cabs w/twin 515's with MR64's w/288's and a small townshend supertweer between the two. Basicly a two way as the townshend has its own standalone interface. Just got the horns but still shopping the drivers & crossover.
Option (3) 817 cabs with driver's below and Zilch's Econowave on top. Drivers options include JBL 123A's, 2225, 2235, and the Eminence OEM Yamaha 515 replicants. I also have some JBL 4" 2445's on 2380 horns to play with...
I have just got everything needed for Option (3) so barring aquiring some Altec 1.4's and 515's in the near future they will come later. Any input is appreciated
