Altec Lansing

I never heard better turnkey, all in one box speakers than my Model 19s. They sounded better overall than my 605As, better bass and highs and a clearer midrange. The 605s would do a spooky imaging thing once in awhile though.

And though It's a close call the 19s sound a little better than the JBL Pro CS-3115s I replaced my 605s with.

Though I'm very familiar with the 605s I haven't heard 604s in a long time, can't compare them to 19s.

between the 604 and the Model 19 ?,

Hi Dave. Forget 'em both. Get a bigger house, a more tolerant wife and do the A7 thing. There's magic in them there boxes. My next palace will have them all around for HT along with an overgrown sub and a beefy plate amp. Just waiting for the lottery you know...

my bad...

A spanking is in order. I'll ask ChrisB to do the honours. 😉

That will be one substantial HT, and not your average HT in a box that's for sure😎

As for the other, I'm sure there is a long line of folks that would like that task for some reason :bawling: Anyhow I think I will try my best to just ask the most innocent questions I can(sometimes I think I am, but doesn't turn out that way lol ), and as far as audio goes I'll try and make up my own design and have fun etc.. Been interested in the Altec stuff among other things, and trying to gather info and ideas for future system possibly..

What I like about the 604/212 is the closer to one driver kind of approach.. The model 19 has a a large following also and seems like a worthy project.. I guess with either I'm thinking on new drivers and the cabs would be modernized or different than original spec I mean.. Dave🙂

Tom, looking at those makes me smile (insert pause) and dream.

All I can hope for is the room I'll have after the lottery is too big for the 19's. My man cave will be big. Big enough to echo more than once (insert dream)

The 19's are because they had to have another home version of the A7's. There were wives back then too. Never quite understood their opinion though, I'm kind of partial to the painted plywood and decals. Maybe it's just me.

Yep, like I said, it's all about listening distances and desired BW.

Any speaker using any of the vintage WE/JBL/Altec small format horns would benefit from switching to a waveguide (WG) and its different EQ/XO requirements as they are too 'colored' to be truly HIFI no matter how entertaining they may be to some of us, though the M19 with a good percentage of its horn gain ('honk') attenuated with a high XO point combined with good mids/HF adjustment minimizes it quite a bit.

A few questions:

1.) Correct me if I’m wrong but are those sealed cabs for the 414’s? Based on the pic, it looks like the internal volume is just right to make the most out of the LF bandwidth available from 414’s.

2.) What type of horn expansion did you use for your diy round horns? JMLC 450Hz?

BTW, I really like the aesthetics of your bigger speakers - “gold” horns 288K / onken 416C.

fred

Hi fred,

It's 120 lit. bass-reflex box tuned to 38Hz. Horn is tactrix profile 450 Hz. Large gold horn is JMLC.
Thanks for the compliments.

Vuki

Interesting use of the 288
