thanks to another forum member, who showed me how to post pictures.

Hi 60

Thank you so much for posting those pictures of your Altecs. I've been trying to find a picture and some information for a pair of Altecs that my sister and her husband are giving me. That's the one!!! The cabinets aren't in the same condition as yours unfortunately, and will need refinishing. I can't wait to get them over to my house. I'll have to hire a moving company to bring them here I think.

I've recently acquired a pair of 808-8A drivers and 511B horns that have seemingly been in a shed for quite some time now - there were spiderwebs and sucked-dry cockroaches in the mouth of the drivers! I'm hoping to clean them out and mate them with a pair of 414-16C 12"s that I nabbed off eBay a few months ago, and I'm not sure how best to proceed.

Do I keep the original diaphragms (or get new 8 ohm ones) and fix the impedances in the crossover, or should I look at 16 ohm diaphragms instead? I'm hoping to build something along the lines of a Petite Onken for the 12" and attach a suitable frame/cab for the 511B/808s on top, driving them from either a 8W SE KT88 SimpleSE or a pair of F4s (neither of which have been finished yet mind you - I tend to get a bit ahead of myself)

Also, in regards to rudimentary cosmetic repairs, is it safe to blow compressed air through the phase plug at the back (the metal concentric one, in this case) to try and blow all the powdered insect crap out of the mouth? Also, am I likely to cause myself problems giving the horn and driver a bit of a sand down and repaint to cover a few scuff marks and scratches?

Other than the crud in the mouth of the drivers they seem to be in pretty good condition - diaphragms have been replaced at least once (there's a non-stock, steel screw holding one of them in, which I can safely assume wasn't there to begin with), and one is showing a bit of scuffing on the dome but looks okay otherwise. The plastic frame of the diaphragm is coming away from the metal frame the diaphragm attaches to, however - I'm thinking I just glue it back together until I decide what diaphragms to replace them with.

Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated.

Yes, you can blow air through them, but blow from the diaphram side. There is a fine mesh screen in there that should have kept most of the bad stuff out. You should also use double sticky masking tape to lean the voice coil gap. Just keep changing tape and running it around the gap till the tape comes out clean.

Another note, many folks prefer the sound w/o the screens. In the 802/6/8 drivers, you have to ruin it and pull the pieces out with fine needle nose pliers.

One last thing, the 808 used a symbiotic diaphram. It should have a brown plastic looking surround. The all alum units have much better HF response. Great Plains audio makes the correct replacements.

I'm new here, but have been an Altec user since the early 70's. i also belong to the Hostboard group.

i was told , this was altecs first solid state amp.

also, the worst amp they had made.

after 20+ years, i still haven't got the one i have to work.

(as an amp. a fine paper weight tho-)

Ahh, TomTT, the 890C Bolero, IMO the best small speaker ever. The mighty model 406 10" is the main reason. It used a 3" voice coil and the motor of the 414.

The cone had a dual profile which can be seen the photo in TomTT's post above; the first inch or so away from the coil was staight but then the cone dishes in and is concave out to the surround. The Altec engineers spent alot of effort getting the 406 right and it's the reason the 890C has the tonal qualities and much of the dynamics of the large Altecs.

Mine are used mainly for playing my digital drumkit and piano through and music once in awhile.

Hello Vuki,

Congrats on your new speakers. It really looks good. I was trying to find a Croatian to English translator website, but there seems to be none. Maybe some day you would have a write up in English.

I’m on a similar path (414-Z’s as direct radiators), but using different small format compression drivers…The project has been delayed for too long due to a back problem but hopefully I could start early by next year with construction help too.

A few questions:

1.) Correct me if I’m wrong but are those sealed cabs for the 414’s? Based on the pic, it looks like the internal volume is just right to make the most out of the LF bandwidth available from 414’s.

2.) What type of horn expansion did you use for your diy round horns? JMLC 450Hz?

BTW, I really like the aesthetics of your bigger speakers - “gold” horns 288K / onken 416C.

fred

Hello all, I've been reading up on Altec and really enjoy all the info and pics that have been posted.. I was wondering if anyone may have thoughts or opinions of what you would prefer for your home listening environment between the 604 and the Model 19 ?, or the pro's and con's of each?

Dave🙂

Hasn't this already been addressed on other forums?

The short answer is how far away do you sit and how much BW and dynamic headroom do you want?

For studio/near-field apps, a phase corrected duplex or triplex plus possibly a 'helper' woofer; for all else a multi-way system such as the M19 with possibly a sub system.
