Heya cool drums nice design but id still watch that wood, u may want to also use a 120mm fan and not a 80mm fan as the 80mm wont be enough unless u use about 2-3 of them, as for trying to put a 400w bulb through a 7inch lcd thats over doing it abit as it will be hard to capture all of the light from such a big bulb to go through a small screen, also u can make lcds too bright and u will loose colouring and contrast, probally the biggest id go as in bulb size is a 250w hqi double ended bulb, this way u would be at your maxium level of lightness before the lcd gets too bright and u can controll that light alot more easily, anyway keeps us updated on how u go with it as im sure we are all interested, if u have any trouble let me know.

Hey thank you Ace!
Hope it's allright to call you that for short?

Yeh, i just came up with the idea this weekend to line the outer flowbox, (whatever you want to call it) with sheet metal as well as painting it with the stove paint.
I'l let you know how i progress with this 400W-7" LCD project. I'm taking pics so it may be of help to someone else on their 400W design.

Thanks again for the help with everything!

So the mirror length isn't too much longer than the LCD itself.
cool, space saving!
I was planning on the length being about 1.5 times the width of the LCD screen so, I'm very excited to hear I can shorten the box.
Of scourse i will take your excellent advice to test first!

cooldrums

heya buddy ace is fine u can call me anything other then the obvious lol, id be more inclined to make the whole light box out of sheet alloy, wood will hold heat, is there any reason why it has to be wood on the outer at all?

It's cheap, and readily available. I'm no metal worker, so i'm just riveting the inside metal box together. Not quite nice enough to be visible. I am much better at finishing off wood than metal i guess.
Must be from designing so many speaker enclosures!
Anyway i'm patiently waiting for my Phoenix Digital LCD to arrive today. I'm not holding my breath though.
🙄

I was able to pull a mirror out of a magnavox rear projection TV the other day for free. It looks substaintial in quality and thickness, i hoping it will fill the bill for reflecting the image. I need to trim cost where I can if you know what I mean. One of the first motivating purposes of DIY is cost factor, at least for me.

have fun!

heya cool drums your right diy is about doing it yourself and on the cheap, i try always to get high quality for a cheap price and thats not always that easy, but it is what gives us an imagination and a learning curve along the way from modding other things that wer intended for one purpose into another, the riveting sounds spot on, if your not going to see the rivets then who cares what it looks like lol, to get the rivets to look better on the outside rivet from the outside so u have the flat head on the outside, i have too made speaker boxes in my early days and wood is easy to work with, just watch heat from that bulb, nice work and keep it up.

well for those who have emailed me and wondering why i havnt answerd, the reason is this, for some rediculous reason not sure why this time but the shipping is late, i am having enough of this crap, 4 months of continuous shipping delays is realy getting on my nerves and this time the shipping company isnt getting away with it, im claiming for damages and the shipping i paid, to me shipping companies need to get their acts together as there service to me is full of ****, out of 3-4weeks work ive had a delay thats amounted to 3months and its getting over that time period, in delays of parts that ive needed and that ive orderd for u guys, thats why things are late, and the reason why things are slow, its not me its the shipping companies, i had 20 reflectors and a ohp frensel due in on saturday or monday, its now wednesday, it was a priority mail delivery also, so where is it? who knows but all i know is this time they are not getting away with it and my lawyer is contacting them this week regardless if my package turns up or not, thats why there is a delay on the plans and its why this project isnt done, somthing that would take to fully design and make up in 5 weeks has turned into a nightmare, so i dont give a time on the plans no more, im not going to give a time on the parts unless they are in my hand and i know for sure 100% that i have them, its a shame it has come to this but its starting to make me look bad, now u know the story behind the tale, the reason i havnt replyed in the emails is because i was going to reply when i have the parts, that should have been monday at the latest, your gear could have been sent out by now and my projector done going onto the next step of the plans, but nooooooooooooo lol some company has to fool me around as per usual, so guys be paicent and ill get back to u asap, its not my fault this is taking forever and im not having any dramas with the project at all (if u think that), its the shipping companies lieing thats fooling with us and giving us a very unfortunate delay.

don't sweat it ace

we all know how hard you're working on this! plus, as you wait for parts, we get to ask you all kinds of questions you wouldn't have to time to answer otherwise lol

I would like to ask you for a bit of information about your power supply setup -- I saw you are using 2 12v 1200ma psu (i think that's right?) but I can't seem to easily find something that matches those specs...I don't know too much about electronics -- is there anything else I need to know when I am looking for power supplies?

Hey ace, what size picture should i expect from my setup at 8' from the screen? I need a 70" wide 16:9 screen. The calculators say that's what i will have but i'm not sure. How much adjustment do you have with the lens?

Fujion lens F.L. about 10.5" i think.
7" LCD

Thanks again

My LCD arrived yesterday. What a difference in picture quality over the $99 - 5.6". Amazing. Really hate the fact i have to rip it apart!! 800x480

Sure I'm open for ideas!

How far do you plan on being from your screen, and what will be the size? 16:9, 4:3 at what width?

Not sure what bulb your taking about is it a 250w model?

I bought this 400 watt bulb and ballast about 8 months ago before i relized that a smaller bulb would give about the same useful brightness with a little more planning.
oh well...

cdm-t lamps

I'm not sure I'm understanding the cdm-t lighting options...maybe someone can enlighten me?
are these the right components?
bulb: http://store.yahoo.com/lidra-sg/hdlp01.html for the bulb. The 150W 4200K bulb is what's wanted, right?

Now, I know we'll need a ballast: http://store.yahoo.com/lidra-sg/lfab01.html

there's also base: http://store.yahoo.com/lidra-sg/lfahl14.html -- we'll need this also, right?

the ignitor: I don't know what to look for in an ignitor can't seem to find one... what is needed?

Also, ace, if you happen to read this, will the specs of your light engine be able to handle the 250w MH bulbs? The color temp is the same, but another ~8000 lumens...

Guy's

Guys thanks for your suport and understanding, much apreciated, as for ideas well i dont own this forum lol even though i made this thread im quite happy for u guys to pass the time and come out with new ideas, its how we all learn from each other and realise of new tech and different things that will and wont work, i have a few new tricks up my sleeve infact im looking at using one for this new projector, it should give us an increase of light with another 40% from the bulb, weather i can get this going or not in time is another factor but ive heard through the ropes that this new light reflector design can give us the same results with the 250w hqi using nothing but the 150w cdm-t, im working on it now so we will see how easy it is to grond or drill 5mm pyrex glass first lol

heya slickhorn, i guess with parts being late we all get to save up too lol, as for the psu i got a hold of 2 of the psu's that came with the lcd, its what im using, its 12v 1200ma, u will get one with your lcd and after the inverter turned off u should have enough power to power 2-3fans WITHOUT leds as leds use alot of power, and thats the reason for me using 2 psu's, abit latter on as things get a redesign and ill have abit more money ill make up a psu that will be small and will have more power then u need on the 12v line and will be able to power cold cathodes ect, thios will be a micro psu for a comp and they are about 150w.

As for the search u did on yahoo for the bulbs they are the right gear, they are also abit pricey though, ill do some home work and see if i can get u guys some cheaper in bulk, also the ge bulb is brighter then the phillips but i dont think u would notice much difference.

The light engine should be able to handle the 250w hqi, it would probally be at its limit for safe cooling but time will soon tell when i try one in a newly designed light box to fit the 250w, as u can see a few modds are in order for those who want to upgrade from the original model im building now and i think its great as it gives us choices in this design in what we want to use it for and for our budget, i have received 3 reflectors in today after i posted the stress post lol and i can tell u guys u wont be disapointed, they are awsome, for the cdm-t im going to modd one to get its optimum light output, with a 250w hqi this modd isnt needed as the center arc tube is clear therfore the light thats reflected in a shperical reflector configeration can go through it, now because a cdm-t isnt so clear in the center less light can come from the reflector so im doing a couple of modds starting of tommorow and changine the shperical reflector into a parabolic as shperical reflectors can run as both, therfore the light will come out paralelle from the reflector then rather going through the arc tube giving us more light, another thing i have realised is the page maggs arent that good, they use light, they arent the high grade optical acrilic that ohp frensels are, they are tinted and also chew light, as soon as this ohp frensel comes in ill cut it and get it to work, get the settings and make it on that, if all fails i guess the page maggs will be the only way to go as custom frensels are a mint to buy.

Slickhorn

Yeah those ballasts are for flouresent bulbs buddy no good for a cdm-t bulb lol but how ever mathias a good buddy of mine made a ballast for a cdm-t using those ballasts in a series circut, run up a search for home made ballast and im sure it will come up, it maybe the way to go for u guys in the us. Those are certianly cheap enough about 5-$7 each, u would need 4 of them.

thanks ace

okay. I don't plan to power any leds, only to have a 2-3 fans for cooling...I'm not comfortable working with electronics yet, so I'll go as simple as I can. Sounds like I'll get a better sense of how to do that when I get a look at the plans.

I'm excited about all the research you're doing on the optics...can't wait to hear about the new fresnels and reflector.

I can't seem to find a ballast, electronic or magnetic, for the 150W cdm-t bulbs, or an ignitor. I remember the thread on the home made ballast...I'll go review it again and see what's up. Might be the cheapest way to go...

I am curious about the amount of light being used in the pj .. at what point is it *too much* light? Is that possible? is there a point at which the light starts compromising contrast and darker hues?

It seems like we've been pursuing more and more light for so long, I never thought I'd ever ask that question...

Heya cooldrums, yeah its a nice reso at that size aint it? clear as a bell, i didnt want to rip mine either when i first got mine lol its clearer then my crt.

As for the throw right now i have my projector about 3.5m - 4m from the wall, its rough image size is about 107inches diagonal maybe more maybe less, i dont have a whole wall right in this room for it to project on as i need to mount things to the base plate and shift it to another room to utilise a full wall to measure it, but that will be soon, the image evening and tuning is done with a short throw (cos its all the room i got in here lol) and that projects the whole image so i can see if the sides are out of brightness to the center ect.
