Possible monitor/monkey box/coffin group project

....The point is that you are asking people to join Google in order to contribute to your project. ...but some will not contribute because they don't want to be on Google. You're excluding these people out from contributing.
Yes, but that is going to apply no matter what. I have Google but have no plans to register for any new online sites/resources. If Github or some of the other possibilities requires a registration, I wouldn't join that aspect. But the small number of people who don't want to use the project management aspect of the project can surely just post their contribution to the main thread here on diyaudio and their contribution will still get incorporated.

What price point would you consider to be a budget 3-way classic... what driver budget for all 6 drivers? I want to get a sense of peoples cost tolerance ...

I recently completed a passive 3-way (8" woofer) where the cost for 6 drivers was $560. The two passive radiators added another $70.

j.
While at work yesterday 😂 I put together 3 different 12" three ways on my phone using drivers from Parts Express. Not taking into account something like the 14% off President's Day sale (which will happen again for Easter, July 4th, Labor Day, etc.) All have an F3 below 40Hz. Prices for all 6 drivers were:

Ultra Budget: $242 [Dayton DC300-8, Dayton DS135-8, Peerless DX25TG59-04] Both of these Dayton's are on sale right now for about 18% off, with an additional 14% off these 6 drivers would be $181 through Monday]

Budget: $415 [Dayton DS315-8, Dayton RS150P, Dayton RST28F in a 3D printed waveguide] This would be $70 less with the Peerless SLS 830669 12" back in stock in May, which may be better than the DS315-8 anyways]

Performance: $608 [Peerless XXLS Nomex cone back in stock in May, Peerless NE149W, Peerless XT25BG60-04 in a 3D printed waveguide]

the project started with something I was interested in but steadily evolved into something I had no interest in for reasons that could and should have been sorted out at the start such as the price of the drivers and the speaker configuration.
With regard to the OSMC, what aspects made you lose interest? Certainly not cost, right, because your targets for this one will take you to a similar range? Perhaps choice of bass cutoff at 45Hz, and the big pricey mid-dome?

How much abuse would these speakers likely receive? I made a sim using an RS100p crossed at 250hz. I don't think excursion is an issue, but heat could be. As far as the sim, the woofer could cross much higher, but it's sold as a sub, so I don't know how it would sound crossed much higher. Obviously a tweeter could be added. I just wanted to see how high the response could go without one.

The total budget for 6 drivers for this project is around £750 using standard range drivers. Good 12" woofers are expensive. The price for the pair of Volt mids is around £1350. I have no interest in spending such sums for a pair of 3" mids to support a hobby interest. For me this applies for all very expensive boutique drivers not just the Volts. Others place a much a higher value on such drivers than I do which is fair enough. Enjoy the hobby.

Peereless SLS 12" (has a demodulation ring) in 70 L stuffed & sealed and a vivivd damped Qtc 0.57 is F3 45 hz, F6 35,6 Hz, F10 27,5 Hz ! Near the ideal for an average european living room. Twice less expensive than the more subwoofer XXLS which perhaps can not be crossed as high (because the very heavier cone). Crossover on the graph is 180 hz 12dB Bessel.

Dayton are expensive when 12" here in Europe, the op comes from.

Times to make a short list of bass drivers ? 5 units ? Choice is diferent not only about the F3, but also howit climbs cleanly and volume size to enter in the M-C- cabinet.

It is not clear to me people prefer Pit Viper on floor which hallow more volume, so bigger choice of bass up to say 100/110 L just for the bass driver (-15% with the full stuffing if sealed). Or if it should be littlier like the OSMC on stands (I personally find it prettier, knowing wifes hate both form factor at the end, most of her).

My 12" list in not particular order :

Faital 12RS430
Peereless SLS 12"
SB 34RNXL
SB34 RNX
Beyma 12BR70

Many things to consider. A bass unit with few break ups will not needs a notch to tame down the break ups which can poiute the mid-highs (the SLS with their not strong motors are good for that, almost flat iircc) ; also vented migth need a notch to tame the second impedance peak in order to works better with more amps maybe. If passive caps are expensive as well as inductors.

But the 315 metal (still few efficienty), there are much better choice at lowish cost, at least for Europe. Maybe a Peereless and a SBAcoustiic is less expensive with the particular case of Australia and its delirious imports taxes. I found Solen to be well ranked for the prices.

It seems a bit unfair for people who are not committed to building, are able to determine the budget.

People who will actually be building should be nominating the budget.

The people on the sideline (like me) who do not have the resources to build the cabinets, can do things like shortlisting drivers within that budget / simulating / measuring / designing etc.

Midranges for consideration under €66/ea.

Caveats:
1. Lavoce datasheets may have some smoothing applied. See 3rd party measurements here
2. In-box measurements will vary.

Ultra Budget: ...
To be clear, my post above was a response about potential budget-build prices. Those are not recommendations for this project and I'm not going to comment further regarding a lower BUDGET build in this thread. If someone wants to start a BUDGET-build thread that is great.

Apologies to @andy19191

Yes I agree ... as I said about a million posts back,
If the project is going to appeal to a wide group, it needs to be a design which meets the needs of many people. But this is actually quite rare, and most DIY designs end up being one of a kind ... ... In my view, getting the first set designed, developed, built, tested, voiced, and optimized is the biggest hurdle. In order to clear that hurdle, the project needs at least one passionate leader who is willing to do the work and spend the money on the first prototype. The speaker must have a strong appeal to that person in particular, or there will be no motivation to complete the project.

Ultimately, it is the the person or persons building the first pair who have the most invested and therefore the most authority to define the requirements, especially the budget requirements.
