Possible monitor/monkey box/coffin group project

The current project concept involves a removable mid-tweeter baffle, so that various tweeters and mids can be evaluated. Potentially, the final design can have one or more options for different mids and tweeters.

Designing the box-part of the cabinet around a given woofer and its required volume is actually one of the easiest parts of a project like this. The difficult part is integrating the tweeter and mid together along with any waveguides, integrating them with the cabinet, and integrating the mid with the woofer. Requiring the two midrange-tweeter options to fit into and integrate with the same woofer/box does not really save much design effort. It is still a process of designing two different speakers that happen to share the same woofer.

Here is an "outside the box" idea:

The design team is going to be evaluating a lot of options and concepts. Once everyone is in-place, and has their tools, simulations, and models up and running, it would be fairly simple to design two different speakers. It would actually be about the same level of effort as designing a single woofer cabinet with two (or more) midrange tweeter baffles fully integrated.

One speaker could be the larger more expensive speaker, the other could be a smaller less expensive speaker. Perhaps they share the same waveguide tweeter, and perhaps they have the same baffle width.

Something to think about... j.

The SB34NRX75-6 can be crossed at 500hz easely i think, and will be easier to cross to a smaller midrange. The SB34NRXL75-8 can do that also, the other SB34 variation are more pure subwoofers and would be less fit i think.

Is a sealed f3 of 47hz too high? I suspect that would be deep bass in room if the speaker is near the wall.

Does anyone have a handle on what the future builders might prefer? It doesn't matter to me what the group decides. It's fun thinking about the possibilities. As I type this, I'm looking at my 15" sealed sub, and thinking how easy it might be to add a mid, and tweeter. It even has the right proportions for the retro look I think. It wouldn't be cheap though. Driver is close to three hundred. Hardest part of the job would be moving it around.

I might throw something together just for something to do. It will likely fade into obscurity though.

@temp25 not for me in a small room. My WO24P-4 in a 40L sealed box has an F3 of around 50hz but the f10 is around 28hz which is similar to a 70L vented box. I like the gentle roll off and more dynamic sound that sealed give, especially in a small room (10ft x 10ft) there the speakers have to be closer to the rear wall and so get a bit of a boundary boost.

Interesting that I am looking into going the opposite way, my currently 3 way (see earlier post) is a Monkey Box design using a repurposed Akai SW125 cabinet. However, I am looking at going down the Tarkus/Kairos 3 way by putting the WO24P in a separate floor box approx 60-70cm high then mounting the dome mid and tweeter on an open baffle on top, I can then set this back a couple of cm to time align.

If BK Electronics can sell the Double Gem which is a double 12” subwoofer with plate amp for a little over £400 retail, I am sure this project will be possible, the trade off with subwoofers is the lower crossover to the mid therefore ruling out the majority of Dome mids.

Thanks. Can you edit the project name file?

I don't think we want everybody on the internet to be able to edit the files. We want the group of people in the project to post and edit files. If those interested can send their google name to loudspeakerengineering I will add them tomorrow.

Nope. I don't think I can edit anything. Tried to save a copy -- probably didn't get done. You must must have set the whole folder to read only. I think you can change ther edit rights per document, granting access when requested. Which I just did for the examples doc.

PS -- what do you mean by "I presume it is around somewhere."??

While you are all trying to nail this thing down (sorry). Maybe a bargain version could be done. I am thinking Monkey in a Pine Box (MPB or MIAPB) using possibly GRS 12PT-8 which should provide around 38Hz in 75L and SB16PFC doing midrange duties. I also like the SB26STWGC for tweeter duty. Not high end but could be a capable combo.
Looks like a lot of interest in this project and it appears the monkey coffin is still feeling some love.
