SynTripP: 2-way 2-part Virtual Single Point Source Horn

Figured I'd post a couple pics from a show I did this past weekend. This was my first time running 4 SynTripP's and 8 Keystones outside on full power. Results were nothing short of stunning. The SynTripP's splay beautifully. I have the inner ones toed in so there is full coverage up front, and the outer ones about 45 degrees off of the inner ones. When walking from the center of the audience to almost 90 degrees off, there is very little audible change in sound. As soon as you are outside the coverage angle, the sound disappears and you can hold a conversation standing right next to them, it's remarkable. These things truly are impressive.

The keystones are an absolute riot. If you are within 10 feet of them, your clothes are visibly vibrating. Meanwhile the clarity, musicality, and ease of listening to them is something I have yet to hear in any other sub. They also do this cool thing where you feel surrounded in bass and can't locate where it's coming from. Kinda feels like being wrapped in a blanket of bass. I've sort of experienced this with some FLH's, but not to this level.

If anyone is curious, the kickbins are C2-D paraflex loaded with some B&C 12FW76. I haven't exactly been impressed with these but they do add some fun tactile feeling up to around 140hz. They're mostly just good for getting the SYnTripP's up higher though.

Sam,

Looks like fun times, good to see people together again!

If you used the secondary SynTripP horns, you'd get another 3-5dB forward gain, and may not feel the need for the additional kick bins.

Longer poles work better to raise the top cabs high enough to minimize hearing damage ;) .

Yeah I definitely need to get around to making the secondary horns. Another 3-5dB would be very handy to have.

And as far as longer poles, I'm trying to keep the look of a traditional sound system "stack" which is why I don't have them up higher. I know it's silly to put form over function but I really just love the look of a big ol' stack of speakers. I actually have some crank stands that will get them up to 13ft but I only use those when I absolutely have to.

I cannot second this enough. The kick with the secondary horns on is unreal and rivals most kick bins I've heard honestly. Last measurement session we did they were solidly flat right down to 80hz, and I have my subs low passed at 100hz, so the acoustic XO point is high enough kicks just aren't needed.

Hello all the syntripp looks great how does it actually sound?
Has anyone build a 12 inch driver version?
Where can i find cnc cut plans phase plugs and driver recommendations of the latest version.
Thank you
Once again, because people can't read through the thread(a must if you want to undertake this) you physically CAN'T FIT 12" drivers in this box. If you need 12" drivers build PM60/90s, paraflex tops, any other diy midtop design, or learn hornresp/the synergy clac spreadsheet and roll your own.

I'm working on these plans as a favor to the community and they'll come out, when they come out. I have extremely limited time to dedicate towards this, compared to things that actually generate revenue for my PA business as well as my 9-5 gig.

If you're so pressed, do what I did, request access to the G drive folders jennygirl and others have shared here, pull what you need, model it out, see what doesn't work, revise, revise, revise, and improve until you have a CNC ready design. It's worked for the numerous people before me who have built syntripPs with less resources to work from than I had.

Otherwise, 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️, not really sure what to tell you. Building these things isn't easy and even my plans are not gonna be a 100% done thing, the CNC parts still need a bunch of hand work and fitting.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the lead @ab01ns that worked out great.

Got my Keystone panels cut today. Waiting on the second pair of horn parts to start cutting the boxes for the SyntripPs. Will be running the single Keystone (18tbw100-4) and pair of SyntripPs (10cl51 and de90tn) this year for our camp at Burning Man and for some PNW forest gigs. Can't wait!

Have fun !

Major elements in the Burning Man Playa Dust (oxide percentages by weight):
SiO2 43.1 % Silicon dioxide
TiO2 00.49% Titanium dioxide
Al2O3 11.8% Aluminium oxide
Fe2O3 05.32% Iron oxide
MnO 00.08% Manganese oxide
MgO 03.46% Magnesium oxide
CaO 04.51% Calcium oxide (quicklime)
Na2O 02.29% Sodium oxide
K2O 02.82% Potassium oxide
P2O5 00.19% Phosphorus pentoxide
LOI 25.4% (organic material)
Total 99.52 %

Most of these dust particles are caustic or abrasive, and Fe2O3 is attracted to magnets.
Magnetic strength in a speaker is highest in the gap, it does not take much iron oxide to cause dragging coils.
Seems a lot of the SynTripP and Keystone users don't install grill material, which would reduce the amount of junk inhaled by the drivers.

Cheers,
Art

Stumbled upon this on reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/vtuhtk
Do normal people in the audience actually notice? Or do you have to be an audiophile to sonically and visually recognize this isnt just a pile of Peavey SP3s and bins up there. For me just seeing the setup I'd recognize this is something different, nevermind hearing it. Just wondering what you have to do to impress a normal outdoor lawn dance attendee.

Hi Everyone!

Just popped in to see whats happening in Syntripp land!

Some wonderful builds out there.

samdboneff your stack looks colossal.

Love the 3D printed version!

@weltersys Look at the wonder that has sprung up! Hope you are well.

I think it would be the opposite, the more volume the cone filler occupies in the throat chamber, the more VTC (Volume of Throat Chamber) is reduced, the higher in frequency the acoustical low pass filter.
To safely use the full linear excursion of the cone, the cone filler and surround channel should allow for excursion up to Xmech, which is around twice Xmax. This increases the VTC, lowering the acoustical low pass filter frequency.
The one mistake I made on my build was a slightly too small filler plug, resulting in a dip between the CD and the 10" drivers. If there is one piece of advice I have for everyone, it is to get that filler plug right.

Jenngirl made a 3D printed one, attached.

The only metric plans submitted to me had errors which were never corrected.

You might check out this site:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1FnN2bpVMVgbMgDMlPyuUvxoIwGOGNEtd

Attached.

They were made in Imperial frist, then converted to metric....hence the odd measurements and angles.

The hole template is 1:1 scale, and can be printed and stuck to the horn sides to locate drill points for the ports.

They were not great but enough to make ours. Id recommend other peoples plans over these....

We now find ourselves usually wanting additional output for our mains. Curious if anyone has used these stacked vertically, with or without a splay (without the horn extender) and what worked best. Or even if it would be possible to have them stacked and build a larger horn extender that goes around both speakers.

We also have 4 with orignal specd components.

We just did this. Not ideal in theory, but we are limited for space on the artcar, and this works fine.

We run 4 tapped horns two XOC1 TH18 and two tapped horns that I refolded to fit in a tight space that actually work ok.

A member called Finbot used 4 Syntripp and 2 tapped horns for bass to provide sound for 3000 people outdoor. It raised alot of concern, but he was adamant it was 3000 people. Its the bass he complained about. You should find his comments if you search for his comments under his username. I will post the video link and description for you.

4 Syntripp + 2 TH for 3000 outdoor

At the distance the two were at, they were 180 out of phase around 40hz. So bass was dead at the sides. But when that many people were packed in like sardines the bass from each speaker didnt reach the other, and the bass was way louder everywhere. It took me a while to work out why they hell there was so much more bass compared to an empty dancefloor. Fun times.

Hi Fin,

Might have been the acoustic path length between the two was altered by having to snake through and around the sardines :).

Your description reminded me of a scaled up version of the concept used in the Electro-Voice X-line array's "Pin Diffraction Hydra" to diffract and delay the wavefront in the center of the horn.

I also have read an article about the affect of the audience increasing the delay time of floor subwoofer arrays compared to the direct path of the top cabinets, but can't find it...

Want to build the secondary horns now, can someone please post some more detailed pictures from the side/back and/or has plans? I'm still a newbie on building speakers and have a hard time to really get Arts plans for the secondary horn.
Other than that had the luck to listen to Danley synergy horns in germany and absolutely could not tell much difference to the syntripps soundwise. Both perfectly clear and extremely fast. Easily the best sounding speakers at fusion festival where i could compare them directly to almost anything big out there.
