cooperative behaviour will only emerge when and where it is necessary for survival, not because we may think it a good idea. We’re not there yet, various tribes are far from giving up on the possibility of becoming dominant. I think it will take something universally threatening, something not of us but of our environment. Paradoxically it will likely be our impact on and efforts to change the environment that will create a survival threat and push us towards either a winner takes all creed or cooperation. It will require a threat to our civilization of sufficient magnitude and it must be very obviously so to everyone. We can see that a global pandemic which threatens death to less than 10% has no impact on our behaviour, tribal behaviour and inconsistent response has been the outcome. It needs to be a threat with the possibility of near eradication of our way of life that everyone can see clearly. One possible escape is where several civilizations reach a stand-off, each realizing that it best not to upset the apple cart and this requires a 50:50 risk of losing vs winning.

My brother was a test pilot in the Airforce and went into Commercial Flying at Delta. He actually took several classes from Dr J. Allen Hynek while an undergrad at Northwestern U.

So, I asked him what the cooler talk was amongst his fellow pilots and the consensus was that the actual videos were not compelling enough to draw any conclusions. Pretty much the same as Elon Musk. But, they also thought many of the witnesses sounded credible.

quote from “data”

“hundreds of Sheliak are on their way, with far more powerful weapons, and the will, to eradicate your entire colony from orbit; you will not even see the faces of your killers before you die.”

An Alien race that viewed humans as vermin, to be eradicated, like we might disinfect a toilet...

A remember that one, not one of my favorite episodes.

It, like most Star Trek episodes, are metaphors for the human condition. The Sheliak behaved as some Earthly nations occasional do. Humanity at it's worst.

Based on current research, the estimate is one advanced civilizations per Galaxy.

In other words, in the Milky Way, we are it.
It only takes 1 space faring civilization to colonize other planets in this galaxy. It will take some time.

Good luck to any aliens trying to make it across from Andromeda and then back again for dinner.
As for coming from another galaxy...

All the jabber about what aliens are up to, what they might do, what they're purpose in life is about...... all speculation of course.
Because we, as earthlings, have a relatively common way about us.
Our mind is focused on survival, and doing a job while living... much like all other earthly living creatures from bees to butterflies, to wild animals.

This does not mean that some aliens have the same way of thinking, nor even of survival tendencies.... remember, our world is what we know of, only our world.

For all I know, aliens, if there are any, could be some form of super creature, not having to eat or even breathe air.
The well-known "little green men" with big eyes is a human figmentation, and these creatures might not even have eyes at all.

When I was very young, I was laying on my back in the yard, staring at the sky and clouds...
I imagined a huge universe out there, and the earth was just a tiny speck of "dust", floating in a huge aquarium - the universe, and we were hardly even noticed by whoever was gazing at that aquarium.
Sort of like us here - with our microscopes, gazing down on tiny things like bacteria and such.
One never knows.....
