Dac with TX 2575 resistors

All discrete balanced jfet fet, direct coupled, single stage IV conversion with 80 ma output stage, jfet shunt regulators, Dale resistors in non signal path. Vishay bulk foil trim pots, teflon bias bypass caps, over 50 Blackgate N caps. 8 x BB PCM 1704K dacs in dual differential mode. Separate power supply chassis with Jung regulators used as pre regulators for the shunt regulators, 200,000 uf, Quasimodo snubbed hexfet bridges, R core transformers. Matching preamp and phono stages to the same build. Extremely resolving and smooth.

Amazing juicy work! Well done!

How would you compare the Dale CMF (lets call them neutral for convo's sake) against the bulk foils ?

Also, another thing I would like to ask.
I have seen many designs, some highly acclaimed, to use a lot of SMD parts.
I am really clueless on how they rank against the classic through-hole parts.

Basically, my question is do they affect the sound negatively?
And can they actually match the high-grade through-hole stuff?

Between the dac, preamp and phono stage there are over 160 Blackgates and they are all discrete jfet/fet direct coupled with servos. And TX 2575

The power amp has over 90,000 uf of Blackgates - 8 x 10,000 uf FK and 4 x 2,200/100V N
and 32 of the 0.1uf /50 V NX - and 400,000 uf Panasonic caps feeding 2 mh chokes for the filters before the BGs.

Resistors don't have a sound. It's not wine or cheese tasting. The reason for smd is production can be highly automated, has nothing to do with the quality of parts.
SMD has been around for over 30 years.

Resistors don't have a sound.

Of course! Only speaker have a sound :D

Resistor have temperature coefficient and voltage coefficient that can affect the distortion. Audio Precision wrote an article how to choose resistor type to get lower noise and lower distortion.

Of course, the different of distortion maybe can be hear and maybe not. It depend on many things.

Do not pretend to objectivism if you do not knowing about components specifications and how to measure.

I'm well aware of the physical properties of resistors, do you always assume that you're the only one with an electronics background.

A properly designed amplifier will have inaudible levels of distortion - Even order distortion in symmetrical amp

The distortion difference between a Melf resistor and a 1206 resistor in the feedback path with that particular amplifier was about 0.003%, that's inaudible. In any case the speaker contributes the most amount of distortion in the playback chain in order of magnitudes above what the amplifier would contribute.

Do not pretend to subjectivism if you do not know about psychology and how to interpret.

.

I see, you can not hear 0,003% distortion.
If speaker is mainly source of the distortion, it should make people can not hear crossover distortion of the amplifier. Sadly, many people can hear the different of amplifier in blind test. Maybe you can not.
But temperature coefficient can make thermal distortion. Thermal distortion usually can not measure by THD only.

Yes when the tech guy said, "lets swap out Jadis's stock res and put some Carbon Films,,as i've heard very good things about carbon films,,and they will sound great in the Defy7>> so we did, about less than 1 minute into my 1st reference cd, I thought,,yeah, smooth, the way jazz fans like their music,,But most certainly that <<Jadis sound>> has been <tainted with/smoothed over>> Now Jadis Defy sounds <<generic>>
WE already had takman on his desk, as we ordered both same time,,I took his word and went carbon film 1st,,,next day employed Takman Rey,,and Waaa Laaaa, Classical Jadis sound re-emerged.
How i ever got suckered into Zfoils, after Richard Gray told me, <<don't>> now i am more careful about Upgrades.
I'm sure the Rodensteins res are excellent NOS, yet I have to go with the newest developments in res, Takman Rey, for the DPL.
= Tants vs carbon vs metal.
Each composition has a certain <<voicing>> characteristic.
Zfoils <<voicing>> I can only describe in this imagery,,Remember as kids we used to place pennies on rail road tracks and watch the engines flatten the copper to a paper thickness.
,,so like yeah....

Black Gate,

^^^
I've come across this <<Blackgate>> on Underwood's web site which is one of the upgrades for the Shanling cd3000 player.
So I am curious, but not sure if i want to include that as a upgrade or not.
^^^ I'm back
No I am nota believer in can caps making much of a sonic dif..
My preference is coupling cap upgrades.

Mozartfan, are any of your vishays in values under 400 ohm? If so ill happily throw you some recoup losses money.

^^^
another DIY memeber made the request,, but upon searchingg, i could not locate the tiny plastic bag that contained all Zfoils,, maybe was mixed up with the Shanling box stuffing whichmy wife threw away,,or my Yorkie carried off the bag , who-knows-where.
I sent the Diyer my <old> =95%+ still good, Seas Millennium. I think he's going to work up the Seas 2 way, Trym with the W22 Magnesium,+ I had a few caps and a quad of Psvane 12AX7, new, which are not even close to Tele
s 12AX7's.
Feels good getting rid of stuff I don't want/need.
