Alan,
That looks like quite a significant misalignment - sanding that down will be very difficult; how about add thin strips to get the other parts at the same level as the protruding part?

As far as I remember..Curt Campbell's other few Speakers have this type of application... Statements, Statement IIs, Mini Statements...
ewollowe,
Jim Holtz does the same for the Finalists:
Speaker Design Works
by semi-open baffle if you are referring to the mid-tweet having an open back, I guess you can take other FAST designs and do the same for the wide-band (full-range) unit within reasonable means.
A number of FAST designs use a tapering mid-TL section, so that the back-wave of the wide-band unit can be attenuated. You can extend that part to the end of the cabinet into free air if the design allows you do that without major problems.

Also, the Anthology's, Travelers (Finalist replacement) and Bordeaux have open back mids the same as all of the Statements series and Finalists. These are all collaborations between Curt and I . He has many designs through the years that I've not been involved in that are traditional closed back ported 2-ways that sound great. My friend Curt is a master crossover designer with just the right touch in voicing the speakers to sound natural. Anything he touches is highly recommended.
He and I have numerous kits available from Meniscus and listening evaluations can be found on HT Guide, PE tech talk and from DIY event attendees.
Good luck!
Jim

Thanks Jim, I'll go check them out too.
I've got a few active dsp options at hand so I might not be delving into a passive crossover much but it is interesting to see these semi open designs.
I was running a VERY rough naked baffle 8" full range with a 10" sealed woofer and as primitive as that was...when I compare it to the decent 2 way traditional speakers I have in front of me that lack of colouration comes to mind

An unusual description for the midTL loading. Ideally nothing gets out the terminus, so cetrainly not an OB.
Something we have used in all of our stand-alone WAWs. A highly tapered line does work better than a cyclinder but is not as easy to implement.

"These are all collaborations between Curt and I."
This is incorrect grammar.
It should be:
"These are all collaborations between Curt and me."

Thanks for the english lesson. I hope you still understood what I said and meant.![]()
LOL
hudelson2, I know how you feel. My kids say “like” all the time and they say things like “between him and I” which drives me nuts. Usually i correct them on the spot, no matter who is present. Recently I did it to a couple of business associates out of habit. Oops. I think the exact one i corrected was “it is them” instead of “it is they”. People think you’re out of touch, a picky-*** pedant with no common sense, or just a show-off jackass. I can’t help it. I was taught good. Lately, however, I’ve been re-thinking this whole thing because I’ve been watching BBC period pieces, against my will. Even British nobility from the last century, say “it was him”. Well, if it’s good enough for the BBC, who am I from flyover Illinois to argue? Who cares if rioters take over our major cities - if you can’t rely on people to use the nominative case with the verb to-be, what hope is there?

Halcyon Dry Fitting sanding and planning
Last Saturday my neighbor woodworker and I did a dry fit on one Halcyon cabinet. My neighbor spent a lot of time sanding and smoothing all the pieces and especially the tapered backside of the drivers which he hand-sanded to be super smooth.
I will probably seal them with titebond as George Short recommended when I built my North Creek Kitty Kat bookshelves.
He also rounded off the edges of the TL baffles to smooth out that transition and generally went over all the pieces. All parts fit very well except the back which is a tiny bit short, but easily fixed.
We also built up the one base that bobbrener designed and provided as part of the flat-pack.
The next step is to build up the two crossovers in the bases and figure out a connector between the base and speaker proper so the base can be removed for crossover experiments. Then the routing of the internal wiring is next before we start gluing up.
It is finally underway!

@alanhuth,
Any particular end result you have in mind after you've completed the veneering and finish?
@davebtw,
Good to see the progress, and hope you have the speakers up and running soon.
Did you get the Madisound kit? Then I am assuming that you will have XO PCBs?

I purchased a pair of A10p EnABL2 drivers from Planet10, the rest of the drivers from Madisound. The SB17NRX2C35-8 drivers have replaced the original bass units. After contacting Curt Campbell, who took a look at the new drivers specs and did some simulations, he determined that they would work very well in the design. The original drivers are no longer available. So this is one change. They are slightly less efficient than the originals so it will be an open question if the bass is as good or better than the original.
For the crossover, I upgraded the caps to the best I could afford, and also decided to experiment with an air core inductor with an equivalent series resistance as the Madisound sledgehammer inductor in their kit. In a series crossover it may make no audible difference, but there it is. I have some really large gauge air-core inductors in my North Creek Kitty Kats, and I am convinced they do sound better. We shall see (or hear actually).

Cool, looks like you are all set!
Btw, regarding gluing the box and assembly, I like to glue the pieces on to one side and make it like an open "tray". After that I line the inside as required, do the internal wiring, put in the poly-fill and place the XO inside the cab (if required). Once all of that is completed and I am satisfied, I glue on the other side.
I am sure you guys know what you're doing, just sharing my experiences. 🙂
