Thanks for the info.
I wonder how a single triode preamp and a 300b preamp differ sonically?
Well, the 300b line stage that I built was driven by a 12au7. I wish that I still had it. But, I will build something simpler, shorter signal path and way less gain to drive the F4. However, I’m just astonished by how much drive I’m getting, and the signal path from the dac chip to the F4 is short.
My second listening session has been this evening and I’m having to turn it down on many tracks, slightly. Really linear but tube-like.
This is really mesmerizing. I would encourage everyone to try the f4 with a well laid out tube dac, and nothing else in the path.
F4 is for Sissies, using Babysitter, too

don't worry, it's not on you
to achieve that, at least in 85% you must be The Furniture around, same as me ..... so simply following tiny threads of illogical info

see here: Babysitter for Papa's Koan

🙂) Respect!
Btw, I knew the story of Papa’s Koan. Now Babysitter closes the loop! Thanks
Glad to see the F-4 is still appreciated. I have 4ch of F4 and it’s one of my favs. And if you get bored just plug in a different preamp!

crazy question....
Would there be equally good results from F4 using bjt Sanken Darlington instead of MOSFET (I have a bunch lying around and Nelson has been known to use Darlingtons) ?
...I may have some MOSFET’s too, but still like askin’

Not a dirty word at all.
How are you going to bias it?
would not the F4 bias method be applicable ?
Hi all, I've seen some talk of using different mosfets than the standard 9240/240 pairs. Can anyone report on the outcome of those changes (e.g. 9240/140 pairs) and whether they do indeed improve the listening experience? I'm just wading into the topic for the first time and was struggling to fully understand the ramifications of switching these out...
Thanks for any thoughts....

Who says matching is best anyway. It will certainly sound different, as to what sounds best is a personal choice.
Just like salt and pepper.
Papa can do many things to tweak the sound in his amps it really doesn't matter for him, he has plenty of tricks.
Here we have just a source follower, all we have is parts selection to tweak the sound.
Of course what you put in front of it will affect it too.

I guess that's what I'm concerned about. Does some of the 2nd harmonic come from that 9240/240 mismatch?
Yes
But we can now intentionally tweak this anyway you like. You don't have to use matching you can intentionally use mismatching.
That's what I do all the time.
