Is it possible to cover the whole spectrum, high SPL, low distortion with a 2-way?

These are the last few horns overlaid to show the relative sizes.

In order left to right : [ dcx464_01, drba_jmlc_150_hvdiff, drba_Shark_RA_45_PE_PRJ, drba_swh_147_T07_Jericho ]

I thought the "drba_jmlc_150_hvdiff" (elliptic) was the preferred but could use some more refinement on the vertical roundover.

@camplo - Is "drba_jmlc_150_hvdiff" one to proceed with? If not maybe @docali can generate a smaller version of it for say 300Hz as a trial printed horn.

I think I'd be well off to end up with the drba_jmlc_150_hvdiff unless Docali has some input on this. I mean I gave the rough draft, you and him are doing the finishing work, and then I have to handle the fabrication.

You threw me for a loop with the last simulation because I didn't expect you to go from the smallest horn to the biggest but at that point, it was obvious that the medium horn wasn't going to make the horizontal polar wider. I remember the hvdiff profile being a combination of many designs before it came to a few tweaks, that in total, makes for a desirable profile. I'm not trying to ad to your work load. I invite you to do more simulations to satisfy your own curiosity. The last bi-radial that Docali made would be an interesting sim, in my opinion. So in short, if you were to work towards the finishing touches on the 150 HVDiff, I'd be happy, anything else is a bonus.

thanks for putting everything in one!

Desktop, i7-2700K (8 threads, 3.5Ghz) with 16GB RAM and SSD. It is sufficient for most sims until they get very large like these last horns which would benefit from a PC upgrade. My PC is still fine for everything else I do.

The system needs sufficient cooling to run at 100% load for several hours otherwise the CPU will throttle back as it heats up.

A dual Xeon workstation would provide a considerable performance boost and subsequently speed gains, as ABEC is multithreaded and "eats" RAM.
A workstation with 2x XEON E5-2699v3 (36 Core, 72 Threads) and 192GB RAM is a close to optimal example configuration. Obviously, it comes with a corresponding price-tag, even on the used market.

It seems, the number of used high end workstations available on the used market in Canada is considerably lower than in the US. Subsequently prices are relatively higher.
In your area this is still an interesting offer though. The same system is also offered with 128GB RAM.

P.S. Many thanks for posting all the related material. Very interesting reading.

You're welcome, my pleasure.
I'd rather thank you for all your efforts.

(Perhaps we should contribute to the purchase of a workstation, considering the amount of work you put into these sims)

I would suggest that camplo should focus on the round Jericho or this one:

https://www.diyaudio.com/forums/mul...m-spl-low-distortion-2-a-495.html#post6010045

I am not sure what was meant with biradial but my drafts shown had a rectangular mouth/shape.

I like the round Jericho too, but the horizontal polar is wider on the HvDiff and the loading is the same. HvDiff loading is also wider than the drba_SWH160_SF138_SE6P....

Is it possible to cover the whole spectrum, high spl, low distortion with a 2-way? _ was the radial I personally had in mind. Here's another Is it possible to cover the whole spectrum, high spl, low distortion with a 2-way? that was made.

I don't know anything about them, I didn't inspect them but we have already seen the length connection to loading amongst the tried flare rates. If I printed a small horn before attempting the 150hz Hvdiff I'd rather it be a 320hz HVDiff that I could cross at 600hz or so.

I have 3 dual xeon systems with 80ish threads each. I can spin WIN/Linux VM and run sim if you need help. just PM me.
My sims usually take a month on 80 threads /100% so no problem with temperatures.

Thanks.

Those are ideal machines for ABEC sims. I've considered buying a used dual CPU workstation, and they are a bargain. Too many shiny things for my hobby dollars. Most sims I can do in a few hours (but not these :) ) so I've hesitated in replacing my PC. Still considering it, and thanks for the funding suggestion, but not required. :)

Typical SuperMicro Workstation
7039A-i | SuperWorkstation | Products | Super Micro Computer, Inc.
New Egg Pricing
SuperMicro GPU 7039A-i DUAL LGA 3647 DDR4 1200W 2 x 1GB LAN PSU Workstation - Newegg.com

The unit will handle a pair Intel Cascade Lake, 2nd. Generation Xeon Processors, in Bronze to Platinum Versions, with various core counts. Depending how much performance you want, the cost could be a magnitude more than this bare bones system. I have used these systems in my business for many years and my original server is still working even though I had to recently replace the hard drives after 12 years of reliable service. To keep cost down, an earlier version of this unit, either new or used may provide the value you are looking for, particularly if you configure it yourself.

btw these are very loud systems! I have the next model in line (SYS-7049GP-TRT) and was advertised as a "workstation" but the dual PSUs (2.2KW) and the other fun are in server noise levels! I initially got it for a "workstation"...

Having a situation with Acoustic Elegance. I was to receive the phase plugs for the 18h+'s (yeah he sent them without for some reason) some time ago, nothing came of it, I texted them and he sent them out in the next few days (pretty sure they forgot about me though he had an excuse) I finally received the phase plugs and it turns out I've been sent 2 phase plugs with about 1/4" height difference, so I let them know about it and they said the shop who made them must of made a mistake....but they haven't responded to anything since that statement. I've sent a few messages and nothing has been replied, that was last week... I think I have a pretty mild manner about myself...I am sorta scared about the quality of the woofers I bought... maybe they forgot to ... maybe accidentally the wrong glue used on the surrounds of just one of the speakers.:wave: Someone tell me just be patient and it will all be ok. I sent one message a wk ago saying "do you want me to send these ones back" and another yesterday saying "are you going to send another pair to be exchanged?" and both messages are seen (you can tell in messenger) but no reply.....
