TABAQ TL for Tangband

Now I have a big problem, my wife listen the sound of the Tabaq's speaker and really love it so much so she want a personal pair of them, target is a very small room so I have to design a new tube amplifier with two new Tabaq's speaker, so very curious to try the 3".
So question to Bjorn and Perceval, in your experience so far what do you think are the best drivers for that enclosure? ....all the best....🙂

...The question is definitelly not for me, but I couldn't resist...

The best driver for wife will be the one she likes most... by its looks...

Show her some (and buy Markaudio or smth with metallic phase plug) 😉

Amp with BT or even better - NFC, wake on BT is very recommended!

Hi,

heavily inspired by the TABAQ design, i built an cubiod enclosure, but instead of the typical TABAQ port, i made(based on a hornresp simulation) holes of 1cm diameter ( about 0.8cm^2 per hole, 1.2cm long) in the bottom-plane and put the enclosure on feeds(2cm high).
I have no measurement-tools, but by ear it seems to work and sounds fine.
The combined port area is small, so i expected port-noise, but
there isn't, at least not at a "normal" sound level.

Are there any other objections against this enclosure idea?

Thanks,

Johannes

The best 3" driver is actually not even 3". Peerless 830987

Listed as a 3” woofer by Parts Express this little FR driver has an amazing Frequency Response of 54 – 20K Hz and works exceptionally well in the TABAQ. But a SE 6W6 3.9W tube amp will probably not drive them to satisfactory levels. I would look at a 20W+ amp for them. Kissabout2002 - now you know which driver is best, maybe you should ask Bjørn what his best/favorite amp is? 😀

Rertrobaer,

Your cube shaped enclosure and small vent is a BR, and doesn't share the design of the TABAQ which is a quarter-wave design MLTL.

As long as you like it, enjoy your design.

NAS3000, taste in drivers and music is really much his or her own.

There are many drivers listed in this thread and reported to work well in this design.
Each driver has qualities, and flaws, that you may like, or not.

We can tell you if the driver will have a good chance to work in the TABAQ, but we surely can't tell you if you are going to like it or not.

Perceval, I have read ALL of this thread and can confirm, that there are many drivers listed, but:
1. Most of them are Tangband, which in Europe are pretty expensive and not easy obtainable. The same goes for Dayton and some other brands
2. There are many drivers which are simply not good or not true full range, despite they are marketed and priced like ones.
3. If someone built the same boxes (TABAQ of any other) with different drivers - he can easilly pick suitable and unsuitable drivers by his personal judgement. Yes, in most cases personal Golden Ears work. There is no mistyque here as we are talking mostly about <40USD range drivers where most of them have flaws which are on objective level bigger than just taste or "slight coloration of sound".

Yes, I know, I am asking another freebie, but I thought we all will benefit from such concentrated information.

I had to dust of my W4-1320SJ whith:
Rasberry Pi 3 + Allo Boss + Volt+
and Volumio with Volumio Parametric Equalizer.
I can hear 30hz!
And I'm surprised how good it sounds after this years!
😀

Solve, very cool!
Nice little setup! I also like Volumio.

NAS, there are drivers in this thread that are not produced anymore, and new drivers introduced every year. That list would be in constant change.

Better ask on a case by case. We will share info if we have it.

I am trying to find a little driver I got cheap and sounded very nice, especially after a little notch, and would probably be available in Europe, either via a distributor, eBay or directly from Aliexpress, but I'm have trouble finding it.

I'll update when I find it.

Perceval,

I meant to write "cuboid", by enclosure is 50x20x17.6cm, driver offset is 10cm.
I think it's interessting for TABAQ enthusiasts, as it's also a straight mass-loaded TL and it's even more simple do build, with holes in the bottom just using a drilling machine.

I have done a set of TABAQs with this one:

2 PCs/lot Sounderlink 4 inch full range speaker woofer tweeter midrange driver for Diy HiFi monitor stage audio system-in Bookshelf Speakers from Consumer Electronics on Aliexpress.com | Alibaba Group

They were quite good, but need at least a notch filter, or two.
I actually went around that by using a little tpa3116d2 amp with bass and treble controls, and with some small adjustments of both knobs, I got a very good looking FR and pleasing sound

The best Chinese ones I made so far, although still needed a notch filter, are these... but I just can't find them.
