B1 with Korg Triode

Here is my version. :D

Does sound very good. Have a VAC (tube) preamp and the sound is very similar - the B1 Nutube maybe being a bit more articulate and having tighter bass. It definitely is in par, even with the basic switching power supply. No critical listening done yet though.

A big thanks, Nelson! :spin:

Good thinking from Finland. The Nutube is sensitive to vibrations and wood has a nice resonance for audio. Don't burn your house down. :p

Nice work, builders. Plenty of inspiration on show, thanks for sharing.

I've ordered the Nutube accessory kit from RS UK. I think it's the daughter board and perspex cover that I posted a picture of a while back, but I'm not too sure as there's no description or photo on the RS website. At ~£11 with free delivery I felt it worth investigation.

I will report back when it arrives.

Would anyone care to share an opinion on hot glue vs. Silastic vs. acoustic felt vs. Sorbothane, for Nutube vibration damping?

My B1 Korg preamp is using the proper board now and it sounds awesome with my M2 clone :)

Here are some pics of the final build. I went a little overboard on this one so it's a bit of overkill but I'm sure nobody minds that.

The PSU is a Sigma 11 24v regulated supply.

The volume control is a Khozmo remote controlled attenuator

I got the Nutube and carrier board from Pete Millet

The input selector is the Select-2 from Tubecad

I still need to glue the plexiglass inserts on the front panel but haven't gotten there yet but it will be smoked glass on the front.

A couple things I need to work out - My input selector pops. The other thing is that I have an Intel NUC -> DAC -> preamp and I can hear a slight buzz when the CPU is working. It wasn't there before but now I can hear it. I can't hear it while playing music but can when nothing is playing. Probably some sort of grounding thing.

Anyways, it sounds great. I have it hooked up to an F5 and it makes the bass much stronger (didn't expect that) and almost 3 dimensional but has a slight echo in my ears on the low end.

Thank you Mr. Pass !

Kevin

Nice build Kevin!

Nelson addressed the input selection pop on the original B1 by adding 1 megohm resistors across each input. Like you, I too used the Glass-Ware Select-2 but decided to tie all the input grounds together, rather than switching grounds individually, and adding the 1 meg resistors to avoid the pop.

Just turn down the volume before changing inputs and everything should be great. :p

Enjoy!

A Lorin Electronics silver plated contact switch. Something like this: CK – Lorlin Electronics

just use shorting one (Make Before Break) and no PoP

trick old as Earth

each Lorlin , if shorting , is having big letter S somewhere between pins

read datasheet for more specific info about S and non-S

Tell us more about those Jensen transformers. Is it really a good idea? Is the goal to make them balanced? Is this the best way to do it?

Jensen transformers... It's a long story. Ages ago I built 2 F4s and I was planning to use them as mono blocks driven by Impasse preamp. I started collecting parts, bought Jensen transformers, etc, but then I converted one of my F4s into Aleph J. I used balanced output of my DAC to drive Aleph directly. The second F4 was converted to BA-3 power amp and I built BA-3 preamp in a separate chassis. I had an idea to use Jensen transformers, which were gathering dust for a few years, as balanced to unbalanced converters on the input of my BA-3 preamp. It worked fine, but then I converted BA-3 power amp into Sony VFET. And so on and on and on... What used to be BA-3 preamp is now B1 Korg preamp. Jensen transformers are still there, and they probably work fine as balanced to unbalanced converters, but I don't use XLR connectors at the moment.
