Ultimate Open Baffle Gallery

Pics please .... not build discussions.

This is a video of Kyron Kronos at recent hifi show. The whole setup is $300k if I'm not mistaken

They've added a pair of large subwoofers so I can assume their customer demands more bass power much like the Orion ++

The Dipole12's do provide good bass output and extension compared to most open baffle drivers. With 15mm Xmax, four 12" drivers will move lot of air. However, every time you go down one octave though you need to move 4x as much air to get the same SPL. Factor in the rolloff of an open baffle and it is closer to 8x as much air. So if you need to move 8x as much air from 40hz to 20hz, it becomes impractical with a flat baffle. The sealed 12" subwoofers operate from 40hz on down to fill in just that very bottom octave or so. Having this ability really adds to the sound stage of the whole system.

I've built a few OB speakers offerings from GR Research....

The V-1

Most recently I've been working on a DIY of Pure Audio Projects Trio TB.
I purchased the Tangs from Parts express and the 15"neo woofers from PAP
through Grant Fidelity here in Alberta Canada.

I used a 1/8" steel break shape on the baffle and 3/16" steel flat stock for the side braces. The back spine was made out of Canadian spruce.

I painted the frame with "hammered" black from a can.

The baffles were made from Plywood and painted with a black paint over
a light coat of textured stone paint.

The center baffles were done the same way, only using a raspberry/maroon
colour.

The garage lighting makes them look shinier than they are in person.

I have them wired up for use with a mini DSP.
Need to get them into my room and fired up.
I'll post some pics when they're in place.
Looking forward to giving them a listen.

Last update :

After the X-fi show in the Netherlands , and listening for 2 days to as wel the PAP Trio Voxativ as the smaller version with AMT tweeter , I decided to add an AMT 25 to my Trio15 Lowther set.
This is the cherry on the cake !!

just best of both worlds.

So now I have a reel custom design.

I wanted to stay within the PAP platform.
For the moment the AMT runs on an add-on XO for the Leonidas XO.

I will do a complete new Leonidas XO 3 way in future.

Enjoy the music everybody ( I do !!)

sinc. Leon.

Quick and dirty open baffles made with my old CSS FR125 fullranges and long throw 8" woofers picked up at Burning Amp from Speaker Dude(thanks again!). The baffles are a shelf from the hardware store cut in half. A DCX 2496 handles the crossover duties.
They sound better than they should and can completely disappear. The bass is quite good but the bottom octave needed to be cut due to power and excursion limitations.
Also, they were much further from the wall when they were playing.

These don't qualify as OB as your upper driver is in a IB?

@ Eelco : I have NO idea , I'll ask Ze'ev asap , he is in Vietnam at the moment.
Suppose it's spl at 1 m.
People ask for measurements.
In my experience : OB is difficult measuring.
What I did : used Fuzzmeasure at : 1 m , 2 m and 4 m.
Mostly CSD's (I did over 400 to make Leonidas XO)
In the end : my ears were the final verdict :)
