Doug Self Preamp from Linear Audio #5

Preamplifier Kit to be offered one more time ...

Hello all,

Of late I have been getting a flood of emails asking for PCBs. I am willing to make another run if enough people are interested. This time the 'kit' will amount to ...

#1) The main PCB as pictured in Post #1 in this thread
#2) A 5 x 1 IO PCB with OEM quad RCA connection blocks
#3) Front panel selector PCB with the required selector switch
#4) A power supply volt regulated power supply PCB for 115v (can be modified for 230volt use)
#5) A zipped collection of documents that include the BOMs and a PDF of the original article that appeared in Linear Audio magazine courtesy of Doug Self and Jan Didden.

Please note that all PCBs are double sided, silk screened with plated thru holes. All of the required parts needed to assemble can be purchased online from Mouser and similar sources.

Total cost for the above kit of PCBs and hard to find parts is $50 US plus cost to ship. We ship Priority USPS within the US and First Class mail when shipping internationally.

Please let me know if you are interested by sending me private message

BUILDING

Thank you Carl for all the efforts, to Jan Didden to share the paper with the diyers and of course Doug Self to share his design and long experience with the DIY comunaity.

Like a lot the idea of the tone corrections with the pots...

Some two cents questions please (from a simple enthusiast I am) for the people whom already build this preamp:

- is there a metal can version of the opamp ? Could it be better in this design ? or at some strategic area of the pcb ?

- Is it hearable to use DIP 8 sockets instead soldering directly the aops ?

- I noticed the use of Nichicon bipolars I don't like very much but the old ones of the 80s/90s : of course I will try it in this design, but can I replace it by equivalent bipolars from another brand : Sanyo or else ? Or does the general tonal sound signature asks to use the Nichicons ?

- pots : could Sfernice pots be better or just make no difference ?!

- Power Supply : i assume it's quiet enough viewing the great work and experience of Douglas Self, but is there a margin for improvement here (not in the the noise floor but more on subjective things like "fastness", "punch", "density/thickness" - well here there are the tonal pots :) - ...

best regards,

First impressions

I've never used a dedicated pre-amp so take my comments with a grain of salt.

I have listened to the DSelf with the tone controls deactivated for a few hours and I like what I hear. When I listen to it through a Luxman L-410, it lacks the glare and grain that the Luxman's built-in pre-amp introduced. Not sure if it has a slightly warm sound but the mids certainly have a nice weight to them.

Hi !
I'd like to reduce (if this is feasible without quality lost) the overall gain
of this preamp (I'm on the list of the ordered boards).
Is this mod already documented somewhere - if feasible ?
Thanks a lot JMK
Soldering a 1.5 kOhm resistor across R42 and across R45 (currently 3.3 kOhm) will lower the gain by 10 dB for one channel. Match the values of the additonnal resistors.

Thanks a lot, that would be great for me.
The gain of this preamp is really huge for my system.
I have a 1 Volts peak/peak maximum input from my source,
and already a good gain from my mosfet amplifier .........

Anybody already tried this mod ?
