Audax PR170M0 6.5" Midrange - 100dB
Audax PR170MO is a Professional Quality Reference Standard 17 cm (6.5")...
$99.80 its sold through Madisound... and they have a larger one...
this is a great midrange driver.... I used it for years... although mine was made by polydax at the time.... which is now Audax.... its is 100 DB 1 w mid... ...
Some of you may snub your nose at it.. but its more then you can use in a med size room.. and it puts out quality sound and can handle anything you can run through it...
ok..i'm gone just my thoughts..........
Greetings,
I have the HDA cone version of this driver (PR170zo) and am very much looking forward to finally using it in my system. As far as the PR170mo, I know at least one DIY'er that uses and LOVES this driver, but I did not know Madisound had a larger one. Please, what is the model # ?
I am not sure it sounds as good as the 6.5 inch driver..I have never used this one..
Price: $136.90
Product ID : HM210Z10 8 inch mid
Manufacturer: Audax
Weight: 8.00 lbs Its also at Madisound.

Looking for best midrange driver for 3-way diy project
it must be detailed and transparent
now i own Troelы Gravesen Cyclop
and around other speakers that i listend it has the best midrange
but 🙂 it was my 10th diy project so i plan my own 3.5way
the idea for new project
2 x h1411 seas in two different TL
the midrange in spherical cab or like midrange cab in B&W diamond.
and the twitter is HIQUPHON OWII in cab like B&W diamond too.
but i cant decide which midrange to use
the m15ch002 like in mine current setup or something else
maybe the ATC sm75-150?
or even accuton C90-6-078
any suggestions are welcomed
Dependend from the cut off frequencies and max. wanted SPL I would choice either dome versions like this (low SPL, low efficiency but sweet sound)

http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/multi-way/249738-better-dome-midrange-design-than-atc.html
or cone versions (high efficiency and high acoustical power) like this

If a very low cut off frequency and only super tweeter is wanted (for approximately 80 - 12000 Hz), follow full range driver are a good choice:

I liked your idea to fire the PR170ZO towards the ceilling...
Do you still think the M0 sounds "better/nicer" in a more classic design (driver towards the listener) ?
Wel the 8" from Audax above has a very low working range due to roll-off off axis...

1)I'm sorry, but I do not plan on aiming any particular driver towards the ceiling.
As a matter of fact, I hate any/all reflections.
2) I have never heard the MO version; all I can do here is repeat that others have found it very nice sounding.
3) As one might expect from an 8 inch driver, it's use is limited a bit lower in frequency than that of a 6.5 incher.
Ah sorry too, I have certainly mixed your name with someone else.
This 21 cm has a really not right curve off axis... since the beginning if I remember... but my memory those days...

I'm using the Scanspeak 12MU8731 and couldn't be happier.

Midrange
did you try any coating on the 12mu? like visaton lst 50 or damar or any lacquer
..
for the 12mu and i'm still wandering what range i should drive them..
I have a minidsp for the crossover.. how many watts also before they distort?
not sure if they can match my RAAL 70-20xr amorphous core even with a minidsp crossover.. =)
i also dont like that bumb at 1k.. anybody know any midrange that stay flat all the way to 3-4khz at least (better flat until 5-6-7khz.. and with a very fast decay, realistic tone..
maybe some coating will flatten the bump..
---
BG neo 10 would have been my choice but it's now discontinued..

Oh and a friendly bit of advice heed the warning on the driver covers. DO NOT, AND I REPEAT, DO NOT TRY LIFT THEM OFF. Slide them off like directed on the cover. The cover has a fairly strong magnet in it to make sure the aluminium foil is protected, but because the back of those drivers are sealed if it is stronger than you think and pulls out of your finger it compresses the foil and wrecks it. I nearly found out the hard way.
i was wondering if the foil is not totally flat is this a problem? i have small bump on the botton and top

Got a picture of the bump?
That bump is sometimes beneficial, but it depends on the driver's placement on the baffle. If using a MiniDSP, if the bump in response still exists, it should be easy to EQ out.did you try any coating on the 12mu? like visaton lst 50 or damar or any lacquer

some says the Revelator serie one is sounding better ?!
some says the Revelator serie one is sounding better ?!
I haven't heard that, and I haven't heard that!
I had the Revelators in my Sonus Faber Cremonas, and I have the Illuminators in my open baffle, and the Illuminators are definitely a better sounding driver.
Got a picture of the bump?
actually the 4ohm version, the one i have
http://www.scan-speak.dk/datasheet/pdf/12mu-4731t00.pdf
doesnt seem to bump the same way.. and the bump is smaller
http://www.scan-speak.dk/datasheet/pdf/12mu-8731t00.pdf
---
i plan on crossing at 1.6 slow slope or higher..
maybe some visaton coating would help...
for me bumps like this most of the time you can see in the CSD.. that they are resonances..

Interessant testimonial as Sonus Faber knows how to do the job.

Don't get me wrong the Cremonas were great sounding speakers, but my active Illuminators are better.
