Synergy Horns-Dayton and PRV.....

SpeakerScott,
Can you give an update on how these have been working out and do you have any refinements/changes to suggest. They still are one of the best examples of a diy Synergy on this forum.

Thank you....no updates on these speakers. I've actually built quite a few speakers since then, and these keep coming out on top.

1. A LS3/5a type design using Dayton Reference drivers...it was featured in a PE catalog a few months ago. The DIYRM-A, I have a 60+ page writeup on it here:

https://goo.gl/XboqRW (Apologies for the link shortner, but I am fascinated at the countries that show up.)

2. A second LS3/5a type design using Dayton Reference woofer and a Typhany horn loaded (waveguide really) soft dome tweeter...soon to be released as the DIYRM-B. This one has the advantage of being a transient accurate design at 1m on the tweeter axis. It's been a fun one...but also quite finiky.

3. A coaxial design for a commercial client where I did the enclosure and crossover design. This was the B&C 8FCX51. This was the most "Synergy" like of all of them. I didn't get it to be transient accurate, because power handling for the tweeter was too much of a concern. However, the point source design pulls off a lot of Synergy like things. It's at a disadvantage though since the Synergy design has better directivity control (both lower in frequency and narrower dispersion which works better in my room). Additionally, the optimum horn loading of each driver yields benefits in distortion and time alignment.

I'd love to work with the driver again...it's a very good design where you don't have space or construction capabilities for a Synergy.

4. A second Synergy design...this one a 16" cube, 50x50 coverage. I did get this one to show the same kind of step response as Tom's published data on the SH-50. Again because of the smaller mouth it doesn't control directivity nearly as low in frequency (roughly 1k vs 500Hz). I like it a lot...but not quite as much as my first ones.

Eventually, I'd like to take another pass at the crossover on the big boys from this thread based on what I've learned since, but they are so good that I usually put other projects in front of that job. I've rebuilt some amps, done some commercial acoustic work etc, and my former foster children are back with us...so kid stuff takes precedence. The older of the two is watching Scooby Doo right now on them...

If anyone is considering building them...it's worth a try. They are truly something special.

Somewhere earlier in SpeakerScott's thread, he urges people to hear a Synergy Horn setup. If there's anyone in the Pacific Northwest who would like a listen, give me a PM.

Take up Bill's offer if you can....

Similarly, if there's anyone in Central Texas give me a PM. I've been known to be quite generous with listening sessions.

(Bill, next time I'm up in your area I'll PM you...I get there for business every once and a while. If you ever come to the ATX...lemme know.)

I did not know you were from Central TX area. I am from AR. We have some Dallas area guys who come to our DIY event in Hot Springs, AR each summer. Would love to get you/your speakers out there one year!

Thanks for the info/help via PM's also!

Hmmm...so..Austin to Dallas adds 3 hours to the trip. I wish I was closer to these gatherings...I'd pack up my speakers, Nikko, SAE, Adcom, and Carver gear and bring it out at much shorter notice. 7 hours requires an overnight hotel trip. Maybe I'll just pack up some of my LS3/5a sized DIYRM-A/B speakers and send them to you guys...lemme know when the next one is.

Can we see photos and data of your 16in Synergy? That's a nice size.

I found these two...I know I have a bunch more....

Not only have you, Bill (whom I might take you up at Christmas when I go visit my folks in PDX!) and XRK piqued my desire to design some wall/ceiling corner synergy horns*, but thanks for the bolded part.

*And obviously Tom Danley for his efforts and generosity.

What drivers are in the complement? How low could you get with those woofers? Look like 5.25inchers?

Those are awesome! Like xrk asked: which drivers did you use? I did a small 2-way synergy with the B&C DE250 and Faital Pro 8FE200/8, but they're still bigger than 16". Neat design!

Woofer is the Vifa TC14SG49-08 (a 5.5") driver.
Midrange is the 2" Gento buyout using a PVC cap for a sub-enclosure.
Tweeter is the PRV D290...but that's because I had it. I could have used a much less beefy driver.

No doubt. I think Bill's Synergy does some things better than the Danley Synergy. If Bill's was bigger it might sound better than the real thing.

I ask myselfs can I also use two mids and two bass units?.

Because I do not need high spl in a home.

Can someone tell? thanks.

PS I had a plan make a conical horn with a wideband in stead of a compression driver and let it take over with a compression driver and a K-tube, it is then not a synergy anymore, also with bass units afcouse, and two of them.

It is al later project, first do what I busy with now.

regards

You can even make a synergy horn with one mid and two bass units, it's what's in my most recent build, and works great. It's a 4"D mid, so the same piston area as the 4x 2"D mids I used on my big synergys. I personally think that reducing the number of ports into the horn down to only what is needed for the SPLS is the best way to go anyway, I'm not playing these in a gymnasium and holes in horn walls may be tolerable for the tweeter, but they certainly aren't an advantage for it.
