I don't get why people seem not want to judge through headphones.
A good set will take your room and much of the signal chain out of the equation. Plus now that the bass is taken out too, a good earphone driver will always trump all but the best speakers when it comes to neutrality and detail.
We might want to wait for an objective test of headphones with FR measurements 😀.
3. I know you have to have a rock clip, but could you make it something palatable to someone over 30?
Bob
I'm pretty sure anyone under 30 would say that's the other way around! I think the bad members are about as old as you are Bob.😛
i listened to the tracks on both low "fi" and higher "fi" speakers (nothing i have would be considered reference) and in all cases/combinations i could easily distinguish the differences in drivers.
so i don't understand the hoopla some are making about drawbacks / benefits / conditions of playback.
This is for fun. We can't get too serious about this because it's not possible to meet everyone's demands/expectations at which point it becomes a chore and the only participants will become the more... opinionated ones.

I think we might want to wait for an objective test of the objectives.🙄
I thought the speaker's model numbers would be listed on Saturday?
Ok, Midnight Sunday GMT it is then...
party poopers 🙂
I hear you, and headphones are probably a better answer than my speakers. But....
1. The only headphone I own belong to an iPhone5S. I'm betting that they are not the most uncolored of earbuds.
2. I really don't like the between the ears sound stage. I know. YMMV, IMO, etc
3. Headphones will take my room out of the equation, but it won't takd XRK's room out.
BTW, thanks XRK for the raw clips. I will revisit this exercise. I already voted, but it may well change my choice for my own benefit.
Bob
1. I'd say a good pair of headphones are essential to anyone into reproduced sound.
2. This test is AFAICS not about soundstage at all. That will be distorted severely under he circumstances anyway.
3. Any driver will always play in a room of some kind. It's the room plus another room that is bad.
Also, it's just playing mono on the right channel of the sound clip. 🙂
Not sure if there is any soundstage there.

I have to admit that a lot of my feeling listening to the clips, came from which driver and its respective warts, made themselves obvious by exciting the room character the most.
That driver with a small peak that excites reverberation will always turn me off, especially in the low mids ~200Hz or so. Though that could be the bass cab sound, being masked to a smaller or larger degree by the accompanying FR driver...

You should just have revealed on Friday. Nothing has changed and the thread has run out of steam. It's rare that a poll can keep people's attention for more than a few days no matter how interesting the subject.
Nothing to stop revealing them now. It is nearly midnight Sunday here in Aus, and I'm about to head for bed 😉 Twas just a suggestion.
Tony.
Tony.
I can reveal sooner than midnight GMT - the votes have pretty much stabilized with many only 2 more votes over past 24hrs. This will give some time for discussion during the weekend.
Ok - reveal will occur in about 2 more hrs (16:00 GMT), Get in your votes if you want to play. Last call.

Cool I'm excited.
I do think the RS100 will have a high number of votes. I think it's B, C, or D. I'm going from memory though, don't have my list on me.

First, I want to say that I appreciate everyone's patience and would like to thank all of you for your participation in this. I hope it has been fun.
The results are interesting and confirm that for the most part, people prefer a flat smooth frequency response. This was consistent in that the two drivers that were flattest and similar in response were the two tops choices.
Ok, on to the BIG reveal already.
