Pics DIY Yuichi 290Hz Wood Horn

Hi

Very some nice work here! :)

I have plans to make some wood horns myself, but I am not sure the A-290 is ok to use with the K55 La scala mid / Atlas PD-5VH driver, from 400hz ?

Anyone have a idea if it is ok ?

Regards

i've not found any data for modern readily available CD's that can run sub 500hz without rocketing distortion values regardless of the horn they sit on.

the yuichi horns load the driver from around 350-400hz.

My apologies...I misread the earlier question.

Yes...I agree...400Hz is too low for normal compression drivers.

With my large Altec 288, I've run it from 500Hz...but the recording graph shows this is quite ragged from 500 to 800Hz...hence, I now use a 850Hz xover point.

Doesn't your Klipsch bass run up to 800 or 900Hz...?

maybe if you use polystyrene foam

make a square plywood box, put foam inside, and start shaping :D

Then don't use the pink foam. Jams any tool but a hot wire.
Don't stop halfway through, or that just makes a mess.

OTOH, if you had a jig to turn the wire or workpiece....

Only helpful suggestion to the OP is maybe cut the outside throats in half.
Because it's one less partition and one less odd shape to set up a jig for.
If you are cutting half partitions (flat on one side) make no diff...

See flat wall down center of outside half-throats.
Maybe smoother transition to flat wall at 2nd radius?

When you consider what the cone weighs, 100Kg might be overkill...
Most of my projects are over engineered. For the C-horn, it's a long 3 meter horn path...so reasonable cabinet height is required. The ply internals can be lighter than MDF. The acrylic sides are 25mm, and weigh 25ks each side (single piece).

A heavier horn I built is for GOTO....

Have also built massive tapped horns and Bill Fitzmaurice subs...all fun stuff.

The Carfrae is another massive speaker I build.

a GOTO bass horn - Audio Voice Acoustics

Thank you both for answering!

This is a diy La scala (2) speaker with components from Bob Crites, I have not build the top box finish yet because I am not 100% satisfied with the sound, I read that the horn had a lot of impact on the driver and hoped a nice wood horn would help :)
The Atlas PD-5VH driver starts at 120hz if I remember correct, and the crossover used is 400hz, 4500hz...
Perhaps I shoul consider a complete other "top" on the la scala horn bass...

I think I will build a Yuichi horn and use it for another system with a crossover around 1000hz

Maybe I should start another tread with the top of my diy klipsch so I don't ruin this one :)

I've enjoyed dozen of horns, and my present yuichi is one of the best.

I've also enjoyed bob crites cornscalla using two way set up with faital pro two inch driver and elliptical faital pro horn, crossed around 600hz from memory.

Depends if you want to go DIY route or not. I have CAD files for CNCing yuichi 290hz horn. Some electric planing and sanding required...but a rewarding project.

Hi :)

I have seen Volti Audio's 260 horn, I first intended to make a copy of it, but then I found Yuichi 290, it was more interesting, and a lots of positive words

I have Multicam 3000 cnc/router, I use this for the parts, and do the finish by hand 

I also must make a bridge from 1 3/8" to 2", I ordered 1 3/8 “tap”(for making threads) and try to make the mount for the CD in acrylic, and the bridge to the horn in MDF

I did a test yesterday in 19mm MDF

I could have done a better resolution in my step down....
It's going to be a lot of sanding :)

Today I ordered a upgrade from Enroute 4plus to Enroute 5 Pro :) when I learn how to use it I guess it's going to be less hand work...

Could the Yuchi 290 be adapted to TAD 2001 ? It's a 1" but IT has the capability to go quite low (#700) so I thought a large horn would be great for it.
What is the best solution
- adapter at throat
- redesign the horn with the same Law as Yuchi ( hyperbolic) ?

Certainly possible...but consider what horn is best.

The 290Hz model is designed for a large format drover...and best crossed over around 400Hz to 500Hz.

If you wanted the TAD to work from this range, then you will need to build a suitable adapter.

When I had the Yuichi, I was using the 1.4 inch Altec 288 driver. I first built the adapter for the square horn throat to 2.0 inch round...then I added a 2.0 to 1.4 adapter. You could do the same with other adapters...2.0 to 1.0 adapters.

Hi :)

I have not had much time to hifi lately, finished one pair of tube amplifier in June :)

I tested som 3d milling yesterday, made some 480fl horns for a 2 way speaker project, not to much sanding needed

I am gonna finish the 290 horn project after this :)
