Marantz CD63 & CD67 mods list

Just received one CD63SE and one CD67 MKII from two of my friends requesting me to carry out some mods for them. Modding work will only commence when I have the time.

I have never modded a CD67 before and therefore before I proceed I compared the SQ of the two stock CDPs and to find out which one actually performs better. I have the feeling that CD67 should perform better as it is of newer design.

To my surprise I found CD63SE performed much better than the CD67 MKII in their stock form. CD63 is much clean, clear and with better sound separation. Looking at the circuit diagrams the audio part are almost the same while the servo control are of different designs. I believe CD63SE out performs CD67 MKII may be due better design of such (and correct me if I am wrong). I wonder if others have the same findings ??

You're probably talking about a 15 year old machine at this point, right? If it's all original then perhaps some of the capacitors in the 67 are getting a little long in the tooth. I imagine these machines could deteriorate to differing extents depending on how much they've been used and how warm they've been kept.

Edit: My impression of listening to a stock CD67 (can't remember which kind) was that it was smoother and less veiled than a 63 in stock form. I thought female vocals were more clearly separated and more realistic, particularly sibilance.

Yes Ben you may be right. The old caps could be the main reason why the CD67 performs not as good as CD63 at this point in time.

"Does anyone have advice on how to position it (ie where to drill into the main PCB)?"

I am part way through setting up Ray's DOS board, and after much deliberation, I and my mentor have decided to cut it in half – already done, a Dremel does the job a treat – and mount the 2 halves on the side of the player where you have mounted what looks like the power supply for your Flea. I have the Flea mounted on the same side of the player where I plan to mount the 2 halves of the DOS, and there is just room for the Flea and the 2 small DOS boards.

If time I will post a pic later.

Henryyyy, hope this helps...

I have positioned the 2 halves of the DOS board as shown and mounted them either side of Ray's flea board. All 3 boards fit (just) on one side panel of the player. I have not quite finished yet and all will be tidied up and positioned correctly in due course.

Just to add... to fix the DOS to the side panel of the player, I super-glued a nut on the mounting hole in each DOS board (making sure it was in exactly the right place). Then it was easy to drill a hole in the side panel and screw a bolt through the hole and into the nut, thereby holding the DOS board in place.

Hi folks, I'm about two hours into listening to the Jung/Didden Pos/Neg Super Regulators in my DOS as an upgrade to the 7812/7912 regs that I had before. I'm a bit too excited to be really objective, but my initial impression is excellent. The most immediately noticeable impression of improvement that I have is in the stereo imaging and timbre of instruments, particularly percussion. Drums sound so much more realistic in presence and placement. I'll have to give it a few days to be sure, but I don't think I'll be holding a candle to op-amps any more.
Fitment-wise, I'll post a pic tomorrow but I have the Super Reg boards mounted on the right wall of the chassis where they fit perfectly. I think this PCB is a no-brainer as a compliment to Ray's DOS for anyone like me who is all about the DIY solutions.

Here's a blurry late night pic of the super reg boards. Excuse the spaghetti.
