Bob, there's a world of difference, an enormous gap, between loud music with distortion - and the same, without distortion. Subjectively, one can tolerate, in fact thoroughly enjoy, far more of the latter ... many people probably haven't heard some of the classic rock albums wound up to full volumes and still being reproduced totally cleanly - they are amazing productions to listen to when heard this way, absolutely magic. The normal, mangled 'loud' just doesn't cut it, a dead loss in fact ...
Sorry, that expensive stuff is unlikely to do it - you might be lucky, but most likely you won't be, 😉.

Which is why a good system, playing a live recording of a rock gig, will sound vastly superior to anything anyone heard at the time. The feed will come from the mixing desk, before it's been mangled by the PA amps, and is pretty clean ... because often minimal post fiddling to the mix is done an extremely realistic sound can be heard - the first Peter Green Splinter album is an excellent example of this ...
If I get the same emotional kick from hearing the recording as I do with live sound, of say a symphony, then that's convincing enough for me ...
yes exactly, but no way a system can sound exactly like a orchestra, a quartet, ect. No ssytem can be as intense, and dynamic and have the presence of real instruments. sad but true. Hifi is what it is, damn good and damn fun. my system is damn impressive and anybody who hears it is stunt, but its still not a live performance. but who cares, I rather listen to miles and coltrane as good as possible then a live modern quartet but thts another subject.

I like the term soundstage and I enjoy a system that presents a good one. The problem isn't with the term but with the fact that some people don't know what it is or confuse it with imaging. I have found the Chesky - Ultimate Demonstration Disc to be one of the best tools for teaching others what to listen for in a sound system. IMO it gives clearly defined audio examples of different audio terms which helps develop a lexicon for explaining what they are experiencing. In this day and age it is one of the only CDs I would tell someone to go and buy if they are interested in audio.

btw, I have that out door concert recorded on a hard disc, which unfortunately is not in use anymore
McKennit is high class, but what a fantastic back up orchestra
When I listen to her I imagine being in the an English forest with fog and in the presence of druids goblins, dwarfs and scary things. A very unusual voice. She lives in your neck of the woods Planet10 not so?
