Interesting, I was thinking of the CSS driver at one point, just in one of the planet10 aperiodic boxes but I really can't settle on anything. Luckily I'm in no hurry to decide. Hopefully I can choose between 1 or 2 drivers soon enough 😉 Currently thinking multiway atm but that could easily change 🙂 just too damn fickle!
Got 2 weeks off uni next week so I might try and make some decisions then so I can stop myself procrastinating on it too much during exams a few weeks after. Oh, got a callback interview for that job I applied for so maybe I will be able to fund something interesting 😀
No doubt I'll be back on here very soon looking for opinions on something but hey, that's what these forums are for.

To balance that out though, I've been looking at the FR option with the CHR-70, nice little driver indeed, and easy to get in aus from darcheraudio 🙂 Pity it's only 4ohms impedance which doesn't really go well with my gainclone (LM3875 with 25V trafo). I'll have a look for some info but what is to stop me adding a series resistor to bring the resistance up.
Funny you should mention the resistor. The second speaker I built with the CHR70 was a small 2 litre sealed (cut down from the first vented) and I used a 1R to 1R5 resistor to increase the bass output and not for impedance purposes. I think the SPL dropped by about 2dB but didn't matter as it was for a nearfield speaker (since scrapped) on a computer.
I haven't used many FR drivers and only tried the FR125S, FE127E, W3-871SC and CHR70 and I gave the first 2 away and sold the other 2 on ebay. I preferred the FR125S as it was the best balance and tonal quality. I'm a multi-way guy so gave FR the flick but was interesting to dabble.

The same guy built a 12-13 litre BR design I did for the FR125S. It was a shallow wide baffle thingy and came up well. I heard the test box in a visit but never heard the final speaker shown in the pic.
He (lazyfly) may chime in sometime and tell you about the CSS.

I figured I should check both camps out as I had no preconceptions about either but now I am thinking multiway may be the best option (if there are tweeters, mids and woofers etc, why not use them, surely they would be the best option)
These speakers I want to make will mainly be used in a small room connected to my computer (through a DAC eventually), and I will use them for everyday computer sound but I intend to design them for some decent music for those evening where I just want to lay back and listen 😉

Was a simple MTM design with a Audax AW010E1 tweeter and 2 crossover parts.
.
I just bought a pair of those tweeters on Ebate for $12 each, I was thinking of using them in a pair of computer speakers to use up those cheap full range 3inch I have, and now I just won a pair of Jaycar 6inch woofers, so small 3-way is needed in the short term.
Would a simple XO work well on that tweeter? 2uF in series is what I was thinking
So, I thought I might update on some ideas I've got that have been reasonably similar to this project:
1. Audax + Seas original design ported
2. Alpair 5 + CSS SDX12 ported
3. 1 or 2 CHR-70 ported
4. RBR Kit ported
5. CSS FR125SR in aperiodic enclosure
all kits bar the last would be a basic standmount/bookshelf ported design. I know it's subjective and pretty vague but would someone be able to give any thoughts on these designs. Just sparking some more discussion really, I find myself learning lots from this thread even still.
offtopic - epic weather today wasn't it??!

The speaker in post #260 used a 2.2uF cap with the AW010E and crossed over about 8kHz so your 2uF is on the money.

I've looked at your applications and the CSS FR125SR looks the best option for that job. It's economical, easy to build and has a good sound. If there's not enough bass then change to a vented about 12 litres.
1. Should be very good and will have the Richter sound of the late 80's early 90's. Depends how big you want the box. For not much more, number 4 has much more to offer long term.
2. There may be some happy campers using that combo in the FR forum. Not as economical as the others and maybe too much bass for the small room. Personally I don't like the combo as the SDX12 would be better partnered with a larger driver. Maybe the Alpair 5 + SDX7 would be a better match. Even so the dollars are adding up for a FR hybrid.
3. Wouldn't bother as the FR125SR is better all rounder IMO.
4. An excellent option and one for if you want to keep it long term and in other applications and uses such as larger rooms and better partnering equipment. This speaker will highlight any faults in the source and amp as it would be very revealing.
5. A good place to start and can't go wrong. Low on bucks and very good sound.
My recommendation.... 5 if the budget is tight and 4 if you have the extra funds.

What is the actual cost landed of the RBR kit??
Is it a cost effective option?

It's US$400, plus US$68 for accessories and about US$100 for delivery. AU$650 or so right now. Add to that cabinet cost and construction cost.
I think it's very cost effective, as buying just the woofers in Australia would be a similar price, although it still stings to pay that delivery. I have one on the way.
So divide by current exchange rate to get OZ dollars and it is about AUD$ 700-
So the small set is cheaper, but not by a lot all things considered, but from (OP ) Matts perspective still probably a better speaker

The $650 ltmon quoted was AUD. While tempting, I think I may go for the CSS just at the moment, perhaps once I finish my 5 year medical degree + however many years postgrad training I can upgrade to something decent. 😀 Not going to have a decent listening room for the conceivable future anyway so I think the small set may be best.

YES Daily fluctuations in exchange rate can make that much difference in 24 hours.
I used todays rate when making my quick calculation.
The RBR without any options is around A$570 delivered to Oz (today). I can't get the woofers for that trade. Even though it's probably around A$170 more expensive than the SEAS / Audax speaker, it's well worth the extra for sure.

What are you guys squabbling about if you want what is on offer just get on with it and buy it (purchase, procure, obtain) SWIPE YOUR CREDIT CARD GET IT!

I for one don't need it as have a surplus of speakers and drivers. Just pointing out the high value of the kit.

I think I belong to this group as well, my significant other will KILL ME if I buy more speakers before I finish renovating the house we just bought.
Matt;- we haven't heard from you in a while, how is your build going?
I would like to build; but just to listen and critique although we do need a new bedroom system
I'm still here and working on the wood. Gotta finish the coats, hopefully by the end of these holidays.
It's taking a while as I've been quite busy over these holidays just taking a rest from school and catching up with mates.

Hi all, between getting rear ended by a cab, breaking up with my girl, my cousins wedding, moving house and work things have been put on hold for a while. Still need to get parts for cross over, wood and other bits for the 2 gainclone kits I have. Once I'm set up in the new place I'll be going down to visit my parents then me and dad can get stuck in.
Will post when I have progress 😱
