OK, so you haven't tried to see if it's bit perfect? I might as well pull out an old PC Dell MFF and use it to drive as a Remote Terminal to drive the DAC. Then I can use Remote Desktop to access it via Android.
They have on sale, refurbished, i5-13K, 1TB, WIn 11 Pro for 250 bucks....

You just install the Wiim app and Tidal on your phone.
Once you open the Wiim app you are asked to what wifi you want to connect. Choose your regular home wifi.
Always open Wiim app first then Tidal.
If you open the Tidal app and play a song you maximize the window and it looks like this
Then you click on the little speaker icon left from the live icon.
Then this comes up:
Click on Wiim Ultra and you are done.

If you have the means to adjust the volume with your pre or power amp you can disable volume control on the app and you have bit perfect playback.
The trick here is that the Tidal application is going to be running in the Android phone/tablet or the Chromebook and then it will cast THROUGH the WiiM to the DAC.
In this use case, the WiiM is just a Wireless USB bridge.
I have seen that when running in a Chromebook, the DAC tells me it's receiving 24/48 while the Tidal application claims its processing a 24/96 source. This is because Chromebook reclocks the signal via its OS -not bit perfect.
Will the Chromebook reclock the signal before it does the casting to the WiiM?
Otherwise, if I could have plug a larger touch screen display on the WiiM I'd be fine.
Of if WiiM supports a Remote Desktop interface... then, again, I'd be fine.

It is NOT a remote control interface. Which is my question, see?
As described in their user manual, they say to execute the Tidal program in your remote phone/tablet and then "cast" the resulting audio stream out to the WiiM device. The audio processing is done in your phone/tablet. This is not "remote control". Given that the audio processing is done in the Android device, I'm concerned it will not be bit perfect when it gets casted out to the WiiM.
A "remote control" would run the Tidal program in the WiiM and offer REMOTE control over the application from a remote device.. .as in offering a web interface or something like that. In this case WiiM would process the audio and it would be bit perfect.
Do you understand my question now?

Oh I do but I don’t desire such functionality from an audio player. I keep it simple and play local files with the smart phone as remote control and display. Not with a Wiim but a similar device. No Tidal or any other streaming service.
Oh wait,I just read some more.... WiiM Ultra does not ever run Tidal in it... it just offers a cast device.... It's just a DAC with a remote wired interface.
I might as well then go back to an Android Tablet with the bit perfect driver or just use a micro form factor PC. Both offer bit perfect and remote control.
Sad, as I really like the small size of the WiiM but it's screen is just too small. It needs external video/keyboard/mouse ports and it should also have a bit more oomph... then, even at 500 bucks, it would be a compelling unit, as it stands, it's a $300 wireless to USB bridge with a built in DAC.

You apparently see it as a replacement for a pc. But it is an audio player.
Many if not most buy such audio players exactly because these don’t need external video/keyboard/mouse ports. That is pc territory. I tried at least 15 of such audio players over the past 20 years and these offer ease of use and some other features computers lack but there used to be always something missing (and if not then the app was terrible or the company went bust). That WiiM Ultra seems pretty capable to play back files nice and easy while also being good sounding. A nice audio player, in fact I have not read any really negative opinion.

Not a PC.... remember I do R&D in embedded devices. What I would like is a rather simple device with some specific functionality. It could easily run embedded Linux with an ARM chipset. It would not be a "PC".
Ideally, a small device with a 7 inch display, and an optional input for a secondary touch screen device, the ability to run Tidal -and the like- locally, wired Ethernet, wireless Bluetooth and WiFi and an USB/Toslink output to an external DAC.
And yes, it would be nice if it also preserved the current ability to run as a "casted" device.
Also, get rid of that iPhone only functionality crap... it just pisses off 80% of the market and is a waste of money ( the microphone and room stuff... just make an WiiM iUltra with Apple only functionality and charge 400 dollars more! ).
The WiiM is close to it... just look at its rear panel. What I ask would only raise the BoM by 20 bucks. Maybe come out even if we took out the R&D for that iPhone only application stuff.
Oh well, thanks... back to searching for a Chromebook bit perfect solution.

With a PC I had always something that was not quite the way it supposed to be, or the way I needed it to be.
Exactly. Tons of RF, always noise by SMPS and fans, Windows wanting to update exactly when you want to play music, the need to do maintenance and antivirus/OS updates, the size, the need for a screen, ground loops, sound cards…and … everything manipulable while you don’t need or want to manipulate. You want to play music. With computers you lost more time on the device than on the material itself.
We did listening sessions and the computer nerds with their marvellous Linux machines always needed most time as there was always something that needed configuration 😉

R&D your own device! DIY as it should be.
I have been doing that.... for years.... My first machine was back in '97.
Raspberry. Or just a windows machine. Also, the Android tablets work well with one exception.. with a single USB port you have to share the power and USB-OTG... and getting an adapter that works is a crapshoot. I got the Chromebooks because they are easy to use, one has a touchscreen and all and with multi USB they are easy to use and charge.
But then I realize they are not bit perfect. I mean, for bit perfect I got my LP12... but still...
BTW... the PC is actually the most versatile... have you ever tried to program Tck/Tk in one? You can make easy GUIs and use the DOS command interface to drive devices. Sure, you have to learn a little bit about programming... but, eh! You said it... it's DIY. 😉
Even better, install Ubuntu... then you really are Root Master Of The Hardware....
You could try the Eversolo. There is a new version with many extra features.
Like many I do not desire features, possibilities, complex stuff, versatility and definitely not a command prompt. I just use an audio player to play back my audio. In peace with no need at all to be busy with a device or secondary stuff. Another user group I guess.

At that price, I could buy a low mileage Linn Lingo 4
Which would you have? A fancy device that does a lot of stuff, or a Linn Lingo 4?
Remember, i'm getting the Keel. T-Kable and Ekos-2 tonearm installed this week. I got a Karousel and Lingo already.. I really didn't want to swing the extra money for the Lingo 4... even though this week is the natural time to do it as the Keel requires a complete rebuild...
... and then there's the Ortofon Cadenza Black... I want, I need, I must.... hide the credit card bill....
Oh, I already have an RME ADI2 FS Pro ( the AD/DAC ).... and some other nice DACs. So, I don't need another DAC... just the front end.
You're German, you would understand the RME and the Ortofon, huh?

I looked at the Eversolo in more detail.
A $300 micro form factor PC and a good DAC blows it out of the water.
My current "main" DACs ( I got more ).
Burson Play with Burson V7 Vivid
Topping D90LE, still on the standard OP amps.
Nitsch Xhiit Prietus Maximus with multi bit option.
RME ADI-2 FS AD/DAC
To be honest, I find that I'd rather put the money on the DAC and spend less than 300 bucks for the "streamer"... tops A $200 (Costco on sale) Android tablet, a 1TB SD card and an USB-OTG cable with power is all you need to drive your DAC. If you want it fancier, spend $300 and get a refurbished micro form factor i5 W11 PC.
Digital audio streamers are the most absurd facet of High End Audio... up there with the Tice Clock.

If you think a pc with W11 connected to a lot of stuff is nirvana all is good.
Personally I think it is silly to judge a device you have never used. A device this thread is about. A device that is liked by many. It probably is not my device either but if it pleases many who am I to judge?
