WiiM Ultra: who has it and who has already opened it?

I like the Ultra for its connectivity. I don’t think much of the analog output, it was a bit noisy …

The Ultra is a really good value streamer, it is a shame the analog output is not better.

Interestingly the listening experiences did not appear to correlate with the great SINAD figures 🤔

I have a Pro + and Topping V70 Velvet, great combo, been looking at the Ultra to have one less piece of gear and has sub out. Looks like I will have to wait and see if/when they get to the sub out working with USB output and keep the V70. Or, just keep what I have, the V70 has RCA and XLR outputs that can be used at the same time but after many years of having to get up and manually adjust sub level constantly it would be nice to have it built into the Ultra.

Received mine yesterday and I didn't open it yet 😉, cause I might return it.

Anybody used the phono preamp? I think it's lackluster. It sounds like the music is compressed. No instrument/sound separation, no dynamics, little soundstage. Tried several eq setting and room correction(that just make it sound worse).

So is it me doing something wrong, or should I just play my MC element through my analog Project preamp?

Well, just consider what the MM pre-amp analog stage has to deal with... a very low signal coming from a cartridge. Do you think that an SMPS, plethora of IC's switching at all sorts of frequencies, uniformed ground fill having to deal with that noise factory... is a good platform to allow for the best vinyl sound?

The thing is a universal, all-in-one player that does many things probably to a satisfactory level (highly subjective... what might be okay for person a might be mediocre for person b).

If you want the best in each department, get the separates... see post #326.

Should be happy they placed an MM pre into the inside. It plays vinyl!

Wiim better had not implemented that and spent the board space for something more useful. A Jack of all trades and master at none is not the desired scenario.

Of course we need more separates, people need to sell PSUs, DACs, phono preamplifiers, DAB+ tuners, FM tuners, preamplifiers, power amplifiers, headphone amplifiers, interlinks, power cables. Preferably all devices modular designed too, complexity by simplicity 😉

Designing a monolith device that does most things pretty well for a longer time is a thing our ancestors could do.

Eh……..

WiiM ultra has a very good sounding room correction/PEQ function. Its the best sounding PEQ function I have found in any device, if one uses digital out to an external dac. No worsening or veiled sound .

The Yamaha wxc50 with its primitive tone control and my dbx pa2 digital crossover both sounding less transparent with PEQ functions turned on. Making them useless in practice.

The PEQ abillity is a very important function making your loudspeaker sound much better in 90% of all cases.

Perhaps an external ADC for Vinyl lovers who wants nothing but the best 😉
