Trying to figure out why I see what I do when I look up safety measures for a radial arm saw. I have cut thousands of pieces of aluminum and the logic simply escapes me.
IMHO if you clamp a piece of stock to the fence just above the thickness of your piece to be cut, pull your blade back so you are pushing not pulling you eliminate all of the problems encountered in the so called safety videos. Yes I have done it the way they show many times because I was once young, full of vinegar and kinda stupid, and being careless or lazy have ground the blade to a halt a number of times. To me, even once in a thousand tells me the safety videos are anything but.
I know some of you have some infinite wisdom to share here. Personally I don't give a hoot how careful you are, there's still the chance of an oops. Thankfully the oops usually only hurts the saw. I've not once had a problem doing it "my way". Please share with me how the other way is safer. As mentioned the logic escapes me.
Cheers.

Cal, Cal, Cal...you still fuming over that?
Spend an hour in a cabinet makers shop (old school craftsman, no CNC jockey) and see how it's done.
OR, let's see...what's that guys name..oh yeah, Norm Abrams - The New Yankee, watch an episode or two.
Check out your brother Tom here: YouTube - The Radial Arm Saw

John John John,
Not fuming just confused. Spent five years as a foreman in an aluminum fab shop and think I gained enough to prevent a lot of saw repairs. Especially if you're dealing with enthusiastic rookies. With wood, maybe you hold a candle but not with aluminum my friend. Perhaps that should have been made more clear.
I think we have to agree to disagree. Too bad, other than this issue we seem to get along just fine.
Cheers.
Putting the finishing touches on a discrete preamp simulation while relaxing from a day of herding cats at may day job. Oh yeah, the single malt scotch helps a bit also.
Listening to If Dirt Were Dollars getting ready for Thanksgiving drinking a beer. Almost heaven.
Rob🙂

Debating wheather to do some actual work, or go listen to the shortwave for a while.....
Cheers!

Those Gridiron guys are wimps, look at all the pads they wear 😉 I once heard a story that two aussie teams did a rugby league demo match at a gridiron match, and the gridiron guys couldn't believe that they had so little padding 😉
and what am I doing right now? waiting for someone to finish some password changes so I can start up some tomcats!
Tony.

It is a common mis-perception amongst benighted foreigners that the pads and helmet in REAL football are for protection. That is certainly not the case (with the exception of the Kevlar cup). The pads and helmet are weapons, allowing the player to hit other players much harder.
That said, I'd love to see rugby become more popular here. I had a friend who played semi-pro rugby in France ask me, "I saw zees movie 'Any Geeven Sonday' at ze ceeneema. Ees thees really the way American football ees? Zat ees moch too violent for me!"
Search You Tube for "Joe Theismann." Ouch.

Stuart shouldn't you start boarding by now 😉
BTW Are you guys taking the Chunnel train?
jd
Rugby is much harder to play. Because you literally need speed, strength and endurance for 80 minutes.
American Football is I think way more dangerous...because of the pads and helmet.

Plane leaves at noon. Flying to Paris, so no Chunnel. I haven't actually had to speak French for some years, so this will be an adventure! Cynthia, of course, is relentlessly monolingual.
Don't worry, I packed your Norden.😀 We're trying to fit two bottles of California wine into the suitcase- I give that a 50/50 probability.

OK now waiting for people to test that everything is ok after starting tomcats...
Hmmm me thinks that the press who made the comments about the pads and the aussies playing at an american football game might have been telling tall stories then SY. I must admit that the way they charge is somewhat bone crunching.. I could never get into it though (not that I watch the rugby anymore either).. All the timeouts drove me up the wall!!!
