Welcome to the new diyAudio platform - feedback wanted!

Would it be at all possible to have a section where members can post service manuals free of charge. Quite a lot of members have requested a copy of the HK Audio Lucas Nano, I am happy to send this to them, but I feel it would be much easier to simply offer the files for instant download.

Someday, maybe in round two, we will getting tagging. With tags on threads you could build your own subforum for horns or whatever else.
But don't hold your breath, tags are a ways off. I will continue to push for them, tho.

In the screen shot the forum width is 75-80% of total browser window.

At the top it uses near 100%, if you scroll below where the right hand column has been filled in, then it is near 75-80%

Just need to fill out the info on the right hand side… the events calender has been MIA. A random picture posted in the lst day. Other trivia and information. Donor banner could be added there.

This thread has been amazing, thank you to everyone for their feedback.

There hasn't been many issues I didn't expect or that were not discussed with our development team before we went live. We made a definite decision to move on with the migration when functionality was solid, but before aesthetics were where I'd like them to be. Every day we stayed on the old platform was another day we risked everything falling over in a heap.

Many of the issues that have been raised are now in our internal bug tracker, and being worked through with our development team.

With the number of posts in this thread now over 500, and many topics being repeated, I think it's best that we switch now to using a separate forum for reporting and discussing individual issues so that:

  1. It's easy to see what the issues are in a list
  2. It's easy to talk about one issue specifically in depth
  3. We can inform you easily as to the changing status of an issue (using thread prefixes of "new issue", "being reviewed", "in progress", "complete", etc).
If you have a specific issue, please check New Platform Issues to see if it is already there. If it's not, go ahead and start a thread on that one specific issue. Please do not post multiple issues in one thread. One issue, one thread.

I will be going through the last 2 days of feedback and starting threads on the known topics.

Feel free to continue discussing general things here, but any specific issues please discuss them in their dedicated thread in New Platform Issues.

I would suggest members to get accoustomed to the new website for a couple of weeks, I am sure with little exploration in settings things will workout to individual preferences. After that important technical things can be looked upon.
regards.

Like button below posts would be useful.
This issue is now tracked here: https://www.diyaudio.com/community/threads/like-buttons.380500/
Strange, it doesn't change fast enough to bother me. And here I thought I was stodgy. 😛
I think it's cool and gives a good feeling of the site being live.
It's the first time i can check out posted schematics without logging in! I hope it won't change!
Viewing images no longer requires a login.

Happy to start a manuals area for manuals that don't come with copyright issues or have the permission of the company that created them.

On the roadmap for phase 2 or 3
A 'Horn speaker' forum would be great, but have requested before to no avail. Maybe us 'hornies' should start using the 'planars and exotics' forum instead of multi way ?
This will be resolved when we move to tagging. Before then we might restructure the categories a bit though.

It would be great if the section to which a post belongs (just to the right of the original poster name) could be larger font when browsing new posts - it's really teeny at the moment, and I always found it useful to choose posts to read.
Screenshot?
All the XenForo forums I've been on have a New Posts as a button on the top nav. The menu and nav choices made here are more than a bit odd, considering how XenForo is designed - it's bit of bucking the new and trying to replicate the old, which bastardizes a lot of the UX.
You wouldn't believe the amount of discussion and development that's gone into the navigation. Suffice to say that there was a lot of wheel reinvention which probably didn't need to happen as our desires for features that are diyAudio specific clashed with limitations with what we could leverage from XenForo.

That said, we are hoping to get pretty much the standard XF 2nd level nav implemented this week. At the moment many items have been jammed into the "kitchen sink" menu to the right of members. Eventually that dropdown will be removed completely as all the items currently in that should be living in other more logical places. Getting the navigation exemplary is something I am particularly passionate about and for phase 2 we might toss the whole XF navigation vestiges completely and be free to have it do exactly what we want it to do rather than hamstrung.

I was initially put off by the slickness of the presentation but that went away quickly.

I have found the SEARCH function is vastly improved and that is greatly appreciated.

Well done.
And it should get better once we have trained it to understand audio terms, synonyms, idiosyncratic terms (eg: cd = compact disc, pre = pre-amplifier).
I have seen it a few times. It is annoying.
While I like the "live" aspect of it, I don't like my page moving on me. Possibly replace with a "3 new posts have been made since you opened this page. Show them?" single line link that doesn't push the page down at all?
Reporting 2 problems:

1) on the formatting line on top of answers, it only shows:

Bold

Italic

Strike Through (which was not visible on the old version)

It does NOT show far more important Underlined.

I could FORCE it by using Ctrl+U but that takes us back to the pre-internet text only BBS days.
Added as an issue: https://www.diyaudio.com/community/threads/editor-toolbar-missing-items.380504/
2) clicking the "mountains" "add image" icon the pendulum fully swang the other way: now it allows me to directly paste an image I have in my own computer (GREAT feature) but does NOT allow me to link to an externally hosted image (the old "universal" way), WTF???
This was a very considered decision.

You might have noticed that appoximately 50% of all external images on the forum are now dead. Information lost forever. Many have called for us to block externally hosted images altogether.

Our compromise was this:

  1. Experienced users can still use BB code to link to external images if they really want or need to, but we'd rather they didn't as those images will eventually succumb to link rot
  2. We've made it very easy to upload images to diyAudio where they will be stored forever, so diyAudio members can enjoy your post and images for decades to come
  3. The image upload button now does not allow people to insert external images. This is to discourage their use.
I think it was a good compromise for the health of the community. We should probably make a post about this once we have a moment to catch up
Again, I can FORCE it by manually typing the [ img ] labels around it, same comment as above.

3) while typing the answer, the "preview post" function has also disappeared. WTF?

We shouldn´t be doing so much manual work.
It's here:

A few of us "grumpy old men" have been weaned on old DOS days (or UNIX) and remember our way around by using keyboard only commands ... not sure modern users like or know that.
Implementing and documenting keyboard shortcuts in the editor is a great idea.

Please chime in here: https://www.diyaudio.com/community/threads/implement-and-document-editor-keyboard-shortcuts.380505/

As for the Forum/Store thing, I'd prefer them to be totally seperated with zero overlap, different URL's actually (diyaudio.com and diyaudiostore.com). Less bloaty = better.
They have been for a long time, and now with the new marketplace area, the store is on an equal footing and separation as any other vendor on diyAudio.

Keep in mind that all this development work could not have been paid for without the financial assistance of the store. Almost all profit from the store goes back to helping the diyAudio community pay its bills.

Advert pop ups gone for me...well done on that...phew!
Google decided to run an experiment on us without our permission. It was likely to do with a missing ads.txt file that was not transferred across from the old server. Resolved now.
With the new desktop template, there is a lot of dead space that reduces the on-screen information density. Many online startup stores look that way and it takes too much scrolling to read. The classic setting helps, but the front page is still a lot of scrolling.

Regarding the mobile site, it's everything I feared - one or two posts on the screen at a time; mountains of dead space; endless scrolling, tiring to navigate and I don't see a "desktop version" button. It actually feels less like a technical hobby forum and more like a social media site. I hate saying that.

Your comments are noted.
PS: I forgot to say that I can't see adds since yesterday. I'm not complaining...
Implementing the ads has been our lowest priority in the migration.
4. I hate the Win8 style avatar and general simplification of everything (as if we all use mobiles or have serious myopia)
45% do, actually.
5. Classic or Dark themes are nice, but potentially pointless on mobile devices (my standard is dark theme for everything, and it does not work here...Still have to set it manually rather than the page conforming with what seems standard across mobile devices now (I.e. the auto capability and conversion of all pages to a dark theme)
I'm keen to have the theme change based on the time of day (ie: "auto"). We'll get there. The theme picker interface is pretty crap. We'll get that looking and working nicely eventually.

6. User profile edit and stuff like that doesn't seem so intuitive, is it there?

This stuff?
I must admit I get lost on mobile, with 5 threads per screen and no thread preview

Next I should check out kn my regular computer win10, and see what it looks like on a decent sized screen, and outside Android.
Your comments are noted, and I'll keep them in mind when we review the 3 themes, on desktop and mobile (6 variations).
The one real issue I see, images not being displayed in posts, just file names are seen, not sure if it is like this is everywhere, but at least in some of the older ones, for example:
URL please. Ta.
I get the impression that not all new posts appear in the list on the first page. At this moment I'm missing the three newest postings made in the Power Supplies section.

At first I also didn't see the post I made myself in the power supply section (on the list of postings in the Power Supplies section itself) but clearing all cookies fixed that one. But clearing cookies didn't change that I miss the three latets postings in the list of the first page.

If this was already reported/known, my apologies (I didn't read all the postings in this thread).
This should not be happening. Front page should show the most recent posts sorted by date of last post.

If you get evidence / examples please post here: https://www.diyaudio.com/community/threads/latest-posts-not-always-showing-latest-posts.380507/
No. This place can have a lot of stuff happening at the top two levels sometimes. Static there is good so nothing moves by the time we try to select it. Now having spent some Android-time, too, the impact there is even larger/more painful. Probably an either/or for code, but just expressing the preference if easy/doable. Static up-high, live-updates at thread-level only would be my personal pref. If that's unwieldy, static gets my vote.
You have converted me. Live updates are cool, but not if they move your page around on you. Perhaps a number ticking over or something like that but nothing that affects your reading experience.

Just wondering, if we paid for the enhanced thread printing capability, will this still work? I use that a lot.
Yes, please see my previous comments on this topic in this thread.
Just wondering. Why does the whole page flash and reload when you push the backspace button while writing a post? But when you type regular letters it doesn't flash. Also each backspace press takes 2 to 10 seconds to complete as the page flashes. It seems to be going back to the server with every use of backspace button.
Video? And which browser / OS?
I cannot figure out how to search “within” the thread that I’m currently in either. The advanced thread search is all threads not the specific one I’m in.
Use the universal search:

0, 1, and pi are hard-coded constants. ALL other numbers in programs should be variables.

Customer needs change. I was caught in CompuServe's "web forums" roll-out. Because CI$'s business plan had collapsed, they needed ads. In those days, page-static. So they decreed that ordinary members only got 3 posts per page-load. Select members could get 20/page. (In the previous interface, hundreds of posts could be captured in a minute.... do we want to go back to off-line reading?)
Welcome to discuss this further here: https://www.diyaudio.com/community/threads/number-of-posts-shown-on-the-homepage.380499/

Sort out the css there's way too much padding between posts, the dead space and scrolling is killing me on mobile. Therrs more space between my last word and the reply button than in all my text.
Noted, issue created: https://www.diyaudio.com/community/threads/too-much-dead-space-in-posts.380510/
Don't know if mentioned already, but can the attached pictures thumbnails made to be more in focus?
Screenshot?
The default Classic font is "same as before" within a few percent. What is odd, what you may understand better than us (being both a designer and an illusionist) is why is Dreamth "sure" the font has got smaller when it measures larger for me?
Follow me up on this in a few weeks. I will working side by side with the classic theme and the original HTML from the old site in the future to see what can be done to get it as close to the original as possible. I don't see why the font and size should not be exactly the same.
The larger question may be so MUCH empty waste space. I know I am being an alewife (fighting upstream in the face of progress) but my scroll-finger is wearing out while my brain is bored for lack of content.
Screenshot? Front page? If so yes, I know about this, we'll be working bridging that gap between XF's look and the custom look I created for vB in the near future.
Any chance we could also add a country pull down option? Or even an OP country flag in the message title?

It would be more efficient to know the OP's country when viewing the swap meet home page and not wasting time opening the post if the item(s) would be prohibitively expensive to ship (e.g. four 21" subwoofers from Japan to Canada 🙂).
New issue created: https://www.diyaudio.com/community/threads/country-flags-missing.380511/
Me too +1Yes please:up::xmasman:

What is nice today with new version front / home page threads list page refresh/update automatically so no need a mouse click
Wouldn't the world be boring if we all had the same opinions! 🙂

Maybe a "break room" style option that just constantly slides the latest posts up the screen so you can have it running on your TV while enjoying listening to your system.... ;P

Thanks Jason. As it stands now, one has to print the whole thread and then edit out the unnecessary threads/text he does not need ( ie: thankyou replys/non-tech replys...etc ). Before, in the old system, one could save/print whatever threads they would like, and the quantity of threads they would like at any given time. One could walk away if needed, and then come back and resume from the placed left off.
I have opened a new issue here for the enhanced print thread functionality, please let us know what you would like to see in the future: https://www.diyaudio.com/community/threads/review-of-enhanced-print-thread-functionality.380513/

An on/off switch for the auto update of the latest topics on home?
Please let us know your thoughts here: https://www.diyaudio.com/community/...ading-thread-titles-on-the-front-page.380508/

I don't know if this has been reported yet. In the private conversation between members; when you get a response from another member there is a prompt available for a thank you in the bottom right of the screen. When clicked it goes to the crying laughing imoji. It could be construed as less than polite.
@gerardv, smiley and reactions master, will review...

"Members online", is that info so important that it deserves that amount of prime real estate on Home?

//
There is plenty of space, might as well put something useful there! We have other blocks for the sidebars currently in development. This block gives members a feeling of who is online and the activity state of the forum, so I think it's valuable.

As mentioned, you can turn off the whole sidebar with one click at any time.
