All I can say that if I eat corn a good portion comes out the other end intact.
That never happens with red meat.
The evidence presented in the facilities the day after a corn roast suggests I personally still have a lot of work to do in that department.
You can get corn mush, you know. Maybe your wife is keeping you in the dark.
That is indeed very sad. I am not sure how well I would cope with not being able to enjoy nature. I didn't realize how immobilized you are. I hope your condition improves enough that you can once again get into the woods.
Here in Canada, we make exceptions for disabled hunters. We allow them, for example, to shoot game from a (stopped) vehicle. A friend of a friend is a paraplegic and he gets his buck nearly every year.
Its not all bad though. Recently I am beginning to realize what I can still do rather than being focused on what abilities I've lost. Also I have one of those mobility scooters you see the old timers rolling around in. There is a beautiful lake in the grounds of Stirling university which I live only about a mile from. The lake has a perimeter trail that is sufficiently level to traverse on my scooter. It is a great place and tbh I don't visit it often enough.
That place for me is very special, it has a particular quality to it I can't quite comprehend but its effect is to promote clarity of mind and invigoration of ones being.
Gordon.
I have only seen one and the guy who was giving me a tour of the West Virginia countryside on quad bikes right after the season was over was not happy when we found it. He asked me to take a picture, which he posted in the bar where he worked, with a caption that read something like free beer for life to the person who brings me the head of the mother f%$#*@ who did this. An this was coming from someone who had a pair of buck heads on his wall.
He was famous for his "rolling tree stand." Not exactly legal, but we were on coal mine property where the game warden didn't go. I must explain that all other activity was legal, and the animals were respected, and everyone agreed to only shoot what you would clean and take home to your freezer. During the winter we brought food for the animals (unsaleable corn and apples from a friend at the local market).
I did not know it at the time, but he was terminally ill and investigating my hunting interest and ability so he could figure out which relative to leave his 1000 acre hunt camp to. Sadly the recipient had the land timbered, then sold the mineral and access rights to the frackers, who have rendered the land unusable.
I have gone hunting with friends and family since childhood, but I myself have never killed a game animal. I have shot many live rats and plenty of inanimate objects in the name of target practice however. Ever see what a 12 gauge slug will do to a CRT TV.
Yeah I use to have an old Ithaca, Know all to well what them Slugs can do xD, that damn thing was way too light, talk about doing damage to your shoulder xD
The only shotgun I own is an older ('60s) Spanish side by side 12GA 2-3/4". I don't push slugs through it, but I know what 00 buck does to old computers. 🙂

The Google Earth view of that lake looks really nice, and there are some photos of the lake, too. That's a beautiful place.

That is a real shame.

Killing isn't for everyone. My dad has no interest, and never has. My mother was raised on moose and has a strong passion for the outdoors. At 70, she has just taken the course and obtained her hunting licence. She doesn't know if she will or won't kill a moose, but she will have the choice. She will be a hunter either way.

But what about music?
My daughter surprised me a bit today as we rode along in my truck.
David Gilmour's "About Face" was playing on the deck. Some slow Gilmour licks were coming through at low volume.
"Is this Pink Floyd?" She asked.
"No. But it is David Gilmour playing", I said.
"Ahhh. Right. That makes sense".
I asked why she thought it was Floyd.
"Well, he just has a way that he plays."
Indeed. He does.

It is one of the most amazing places for me personally. I didn't always live here in Stirling, I grew up just on the fringes of Glasgow, about 27 miles from Stirling. Anyway in 1996 when I was still living there, I undertook an open university course ( distance learning ) and as part of the course you attend a week long summer school at a university, that was when I discovered Stirling University. Aside from the beauty of the campus, that week at the summer school was one of the best weeks of my life. As I said before the place has a special quality to it, an energy, a vibe. My friend Bryan gets it too so I don't think its just me being a casualty of over indulgence of drugs!
In 1997 I decided that I wanted to do psychiatric nursing and it turned out that you could study it at Stirling University. So in September 1998 I began a three year program based at Stirling uni, since then, with the exception of a 5 month spell back in Glasgow, I have lived here in Stirling. It is a great place to live and for a long time after my stroke I forgot that, but now it's all coming back to me and I try to get out on my scooter every day that it isn't raining. Sadly these scooters are not that tolerant of heavy rain!

Speaking of scooters, I have a friend who, when she gets out of the hospital will rely on a scooter so a friend and I decided a ramp was in order. All 24 feet of it at a slope of 1.6:12. Built like no other with enough supports and bracing to outlast any earthquake. It's not finished yet but I know the pics will surface around here somewhere when it is.
Killing isn't for everyone. My dad has no interest, and never has.
I have never needed to pull the trigger since I know two people who like to hunt and fish that don't consume all they kill, so I get free food for helping out with the dirty work. My ability to hit a target isn't so good, and is getting worse because of shaky hands. Shooting an animal and wounding but not killing it is inhumane since it will bolt and run until it eventually drops, and dies. You will likely never find it, and the animal suffers needlessly.
This is the real reason I haven't tried to shoot a deer. You don't pull the trigger unless you have a kill shot. If I was 100% confident of my shot, and nobody else was ready, I would take the shot, but I haven't done so, and at the moment I do not own a legal hunting rifle.
I sold several of my guns about 10 years ago, and my brother managed to abscond with most of the collection left to us by our grandfather....who had a small arsenal. He was an avid hunter and could go into the Georgia woods with minimal equipment and no food, and come out a week later with a cooler full of meat. Mostly small game like rabbit.
10 years ago I could populate cell phone boards by hand with a soldering iron, a microscope and a pair of tweezers. SMD devices have gotten smaller, and my hands have gotten worse, so I gave that up too.
Headless carcasses; I haven't found one yet, but if I did I would report it.
At the beginning of hunting season this year a new billboard was erected on the major roadway through this area. It shows picture of an elephant and a caption that reads "I am not a trophy." Coincidence? It is sponsored by the WWF (World Wildlife Federation) and there are no wild elephants here.
one of those mobility scooters
Due to a shot knee (call me colourful), I borrowed an electric mobility scooter for a couple of months.
Each trip to the supermarket was a display of the humane character of 'normal' people. In particular when heading for the cash register.
(admit that, on the stock market, I've counted several times on the quantitative predictability of mankind)
Feeling melancholic? People no good? Too many sociopaths, psychopaths and supermarket people around?
All those suckers spoiling the fun of the good people. Isn't that right?

It's still ****** but I got used to it. After the first days of sorrow and anger, because there's sorrow in losing something valuable and there's anger of losing it stupidity, came a quiet peace. I got used to it.
you didn't lose it stupidly it;s not like you got it by standing too close your friends firing off their dad's old thunderbuss's.
Well it's not gone, it's slightly damaged. And it all happened because of my unhealthy relationship with my equipment. I got it all wrong lol. One second and then it's too late to go back..
Isn't that right?
In 25 years time, you and me will be exactly the same : no job, no teeth, and no future.
In the meantime, there are more good people I appreciate and care about than I did 25 years ago.
