This is one of the things that people do that annoy me, they'll complain about people hunting wild animals with rifles but they'll happily eat their intensively farmed burgers and hotdogs.
Don't overlook that many hunters make sure the wildlife is fed and watered year round. Even if their purpose may be a trophy buck or full freezer.
Varmints of all sorts aren't so lucky...
Not just that, but hunters contribute *far more* money than any other single group (including Greenpeace and similar) to conservation of wildlife and lands. Most people have no idea just how important that money is.
I respect all people's choice to choose what they eat, but I do not respect hypocrisy.
Could not agree more. Living close to the ocean it's fish we see from living to plate. My older daughter and wife are a bit squeamish but not the 8 year old....Her question on each fish caught is "can we keep it?"... Read can we eat it.
Which begs the question
Sociopaths can lead a completely regular life (within socially accepted margins) for a very long time.
To most people, they will even come across as behaving socially above average. Plenty of friends and acquaintances, easily connect to other/new people, pleasant collegues even (if one does not stand in their way)
They will come across as reasonable, interested in others, and commited to causes/topics which are generally viewed upon as positive.
E.g. things like caring for animals, becoming a donor(parent) of a child in Africa, they'll even talk of having moral standards.
But it's all make-belief, for their better glory, it's whatever people or you like to hear, instruments instead of goals.
Sociopaths have cameleon-like behaviour, what I've come to phrase as drawing curtains.
When the target changes, another curtain is drawn, they'll become a totally different person and start a totally different life.
When I met my ex-wife, it turned out we grew up in the same village, went to the same school. Her two brothers even played music with a family member of mine.
When my son was born, I'd already been living with her for close to 8 years, she appeared totally normal up till then.
From the moment my son arrived, her behaviour changed radically, like night and day.
The absolute worst mistake one can make, is to have a kid with a sociopath.
No greater power leverage than a child, they'll use it and turn your life into a living nightmare.
Sociopaths have highly developed sensors/antennae which will registrate each and everyone of your vulnerabilities, soft spots.
For the case of the antisocial personality disorder, stastistics say that there's 1 in every 50. 1 in 100 has a narcissistic personality disorder.
Combined, that makes 3% of the population !
What separates them from people with other PD's is that, with rare exceptions, they'll never ever admit there's something wrong with them.
It's been my experience that next to no one is able to spot/identify such sociopaths.
Secondly, you can lay it out in easy small chunks to a family member, and you''ll still not get the message across.
My son turns 18 in a few months, he's been living with me/us for close to a year.
In a couple of years, he and my g/f's youngest son will be out of school and start their own life, after which my g/f and me will retire early.
Ten years earlier than I anticipated at the time of my marriage, but beggars can't be choosers.
I've slept grand for over a decade, btw, but thanks for asking.

For the record: I do not smoke weed while hunting, and I don't listen to music, either.

Like Jacco, I lived with a psycho for many years (6).
Like Cal, I feel truly blessed to have met and married my wife. She makes me a better person in countless ways.

My g/f's brother married a woman with BPD some 30 years ago.
He knew her condition up front, convinced he was strong enough to help her.
Half a dozen years ago, the both of us went to a car show.
He'd been recently discharged from hospital, admitted there for alcoholism related issues.
Over a coffee for me, and a beer for him, I layed out my story to him.
He answered that that was never going to happen to him.
Two years ago, he'd been admitted to hospital 4 times.
Decided he didn't want to change his life, but would drink himself to death.
Took him 3 months.

If you believe we have evolved from primates, then this provides a good basis for the argument that we are not principally meat eaters, as primates tend to live off non meat foods when supplies are plentiful only switching to meat when really necessary.
Gordon.
Thing is none of our close relatives are vegetarian and all primates are exceptionally bad at digesting plant material.
The most primitive primates are all almost pure insectivores but later on primates developed a taste for fruit.
Our natural diet therefore is Duck a l'Orange.😀
I can't help it if you live in the Third World, where they haven't invented dentistry and the beer is warm. 😀
Every time I see the Opening of Parliament I think I live in a kind of medieval theme park.
What gets one in the end is the stamina thing - there is only so much fuel in the tank, and when the last bit is consumed then something has to be done. I just walked away from it, and shut the door, firmly - no point in throwing good money after bad ...My g/f's brother married a woman with BPD some 30 years ago.

This seems to be a recurring theme for a lot of guys. I say this on the basis of what I've heard here and my own experiences as well as those of friends. I think the same goes for a lot of woman too, who all seem to go through the dating a$$holes phase. I dread the days my daughters hit this phase!
Perhaps it's all a part of growing up though some people seem doomed to repeat the same chaos over and over, I seen a lot of that when working in the psychiatric services. Perhaps some people never find that right person, which is tragic really. I guess we really need to count our blessings.

You may well be right about that. Anyway my objection is not to the eating of animals perse but in the way it's done in the industrialized world.
It is a fact though that the human digestive system is not very good at breaking down red meat.

Actually, I'm quite good at it. 60 years of practice. 😀
.Frank · ·· ··· What's infinity? The number of ways that human ugliness can be expressed ...
Pretty dark, though quite possibly true, I've certainly spent a lot of time pondering this aspect of the human condition. Though for every shade of human darkness there must be an equalizing shade of light otherwise I think we all would have spiraled downwards into total self destruction.

The higher the education level, the higher the monetary gains, the greater the risk of attracting a money guzzler.
My g/f drew a narcissist from the deck.
She initially wanted to become a tropical doctor, altered her choice to please him.
She then had plans of becoming a teaching professor in her field in time, he made sure that was not going to happen, plus ruined her financially.
The way he treated her over a 15 year course is hard to believe, even for me.
My g/f has two female doctor friends with somewhat similar stories, though far less dramatic.
On the other hand, several of her male collegues have also been professionally sucked dry to the bone.
A couple are very vindictive till this very day.

It is a fact if you believe new-agey media.
It is an urban myth if you believe sciencey-type media.
All I can say that if I eat corn a good portion comes out the other end intact.
That never happens with red meat.
Actually, I'm quite good at it. 60 years of practice. 😀
The evidence presented in the facilities the day after a corn roast suggests I personally still have a lot of work to do in that department.
Don't worry, I'll be changing it soon, 🙂. In part this was a reaction to an execution of Australian citizens in Indonesia, for a severe crime, yes; but which was done in a bizarre, grotesque manner.
I sometimes think of it as a 5/95 percent rule: 95% of human activity has no special significance, or is rubbish; the same, predictable stuff done over and over again ... the magic is in what occurs in that 5% part ...

I too sometimes react disproportionally to news of another variation of human atrocity. Its easy to get bogged down by all the crap and fail to see, as you say, the magic that happens the other 5% of the time.

Headless carcasses; I haven't found one yet, but if I did I would report it.
I have only seen one and the guy who was giving me a tour of the West Virginia countryside on quad bikes right after the season was over was not happy when we found it. He asked me to take a picture, which he posted in the bar where he worked, with a caption that read something like free beer for life to the person who brings me the head of the mother f%$#*@ who did this. An this was coming from someone who had a pair of buck heads on his wall.
He was famous for his "rolling tree stand." Not exactly legal, but we were on coal mine property where the game warden didn't go. I must explain that all other activity was legal, and the animals were respected, and everyone agreed to only shoot what you would clean and take home to your freezer. During the winter we brought food for the animals (unsaleable corn and apples from a friend at the local market).
I did not know it at the time, but he was terminally ill and investigating my hunting interest and ability so he could figure out which relative to leave his 1000 acre hunt camp to. Sadly the recipient had the land timbered, then sold the mineral and access rights to the frackers, who have rendered the land unusable.
I have gone hunting with friends and family since childhood, but I myself have never killed a game animal. I have shot many live rats and plenty of inanimate objects in the name of target practice however. Ever see what a 12 gauge slug will do to a CRT TV.
