...Do you think that considerable business acumen and humour are mutually exclusive.

Oh hell yes. I've thought for a long time that a functioning sense of humor is generally inversely proportional to several other human tendencies. And they should be fairly easy to guess since I can't discuss any of them without violating the TOS, heh.

...I have been left with the remarkable ability to think like a stoned person without the need for the intoxication! Thankfully I am able to switch this on and off!
Whoa, dude! That's pretty, uh... Hmm. Say, would you mind if we hooked your brain up to this machine for a few quick tests? Won't take a minute. Right, now hold still, this will either tickle or sting, we're never sure which. And when the rabbit asks if you've seen his spectacles, don't panic - just remind him he has a spare pair. Science thanks you.

No, actually I would be at ease even more/think even clearer/more Stable when I'm stoned...I'm an Alien...it works a bit different with me. I simply/seriously Function/Feel Better...it's hard to explain, you would just have to see it. If you clearly have/recognize some noticeable Psychological troubles, its really very effective for a lot of that. More so than about 99% of Pharmaceutical's...Big Pharma is so Full of it.

Do you think that considerable business acumen and humour are mutually exclusive. My basis for this theory is perhaps a bit weak but is based on 2 famous Brits, namely Simon Cowell and Sir Allan Michael Sugar, both of whom display an innate absence of humour, yet have amassed huge business empires. Oh, and not forgetting Mr Burns from the Simpsons! Do you agree with this theory, can you cite any good examples to contradict this theory?
Bob Hope?
I'd be surprised if there wasn't a little something to your theory, but equally I think there are probably some conflicting perceptions, too. Businessmen generally have a public persona that exudes seriousness and confidence. Much like scientists. Understandably, it doesn't help their cause to come across as a joker. Whether or not Warren Buffett has joy buzzers and favorite one-liners isn't publicized. So as far as "mutually exclusive" goes, my answer is no. I found a relevant Forbes article here that you might find interesting.

That is just not healthy to have just innate absence of all Humor...what? really be serious constantly/be on edge all the time?...that's a bit too much. The Idea/act of Finding Humor itself in numerous things is part of it and the idea. If I can thing of at least one damn thing/substance being Natural/addicting/stimulating is Humor.

You see, you're not stoned we're not connecting. Link is missing. Smoke something.

I think I'll need to reinstall my stoner simulation software!

Actually I did get it shortly after posting "WTF?" Whilst I was eating a sandwich. The implication is that you must be a bum because you do have a sense of humour. Perhaps I should add an ammendment to my theory such that it only works in the case of public figures, but then there is Bob Hope!

But taking account of the public persona factor, perhaps it could be argued that in general those individuals who choose a career where they have to be seen as serious and in control, perhaps do so because it fits comfortably around their inherent personalities, which I propose are inherently lacking in humour.

For individuals not in the public arena, who knows, I suspect that my original claim that " considerable business acumen and humour are mutually exclusive" may not necessarily apply to individuals in the general population.

Again, straying a bit off topic, I had this theory and it reminded me of the sort of thing you'd think of and discuss tirelessly when stoned. Here it is: Do you think that considerable business acumen and humour are mutually exclusive. My basis for this theory is perhaps a bit weak but is based on 2 famous Brits, namely Simon Cowell and Sir Allan Michael Sugar, both of whom display an innate absence of humour, yet have amassed huge business empires. A good sense of humour requires a good dose of empathy which is lacking in psychopaths.

The careers attracting the most psychopaths are, in this order:
CEO, lawyer, media, sales, surgeon. journalist, police, clergy, chef and civil service.
In business there are lots of 1, 2 and 4 which in theory should all be lacking a healthy sense of humour.

On this basis I tend to agree with your theory.

Guys, let's stay away from politics- forum rules.

I'll be getting a reputation as a trouble maker. 🙂

I'm living in a household where there is a lot of lively discussion about politics. I realize though its not for everyone and will try to steer clear in future. Our defence , weak as it may be was that we weren't actually talking politics but of certain personality traits that members of various professions, including but not exclusively, politicians seem to share.

If I have offended any readers, I sincerely apologize.

lots of 1, 2 and 4

Society loves the very same characteristics which define a psychopath.
The ones with a high verbal IQ can fake humor.

I would go as far as claiming that if you bump into someone who adores word games and frequent casual use of fancy words, you're dealing at the least with a sociopath.

(I was married to someone with an antisocial personality disorder, my g/f to a guy with a narcistic PD. My gf's ex-husband was born on Curaçao and speaks several languages fluently, refers to himself as a formidable former CEO. Mine loves to read & write, went to acting school. Both love to engage in pun, it's only when one gets acquainted with their true identity, when reality hits that their jokes are by no means funny)
