Open baffle speaker with Fane Sovereign 15-300tc and
A&D Audio D1575 with alu foil sandwich.
Will be tested with TDA2005 mini amp in current drive. Initially without any crossover. Maybe the bass will get some inductivity.
Will be used for LPs on a Rega Planar 3 with Goldring 1042 stylus.

So here’s the 15pr400…..basically the new pro industry standard for 15” midwoofers…..notice there’s only a 3bd off axis dip at 1khz….CERTAINLY quite ok to run this driver up to 1khz second order. There’s a ferrite version shipping this November for round 2/3 the cost……a pair of these per side with a .5 filter on the bottom driver on a 20” baffle would be fantastic if one had the room for such a system.

All, I just wrote a new post "Open Baffle Bass Boost: +4 to +7dB w/ Passive Xover. No DSP." Relevant to many builders here.
...And I posted full details on a 15” Open Baffle 2-way with Live Edge Wood, Constant Directivity, Passive Xover and Punchy Bass. It uses the Passive Bass Boost circuit I described in the link just above.

don't understand though the role of the parallel resistors, you lose a lot of dBs that way.
is that so you can have 8ohm impedance?

Is that a Sony VFET in the back? If so, maybe you should get a 6/24 crossover and bi-amp your OBs. 😎

All, I just posted a tech note here regarding the Bitches Brew Live Edge Dipole series crossover network.
A series network has huge advantages over a parallel network especially with subwoofer and this is applicable to many Open Baffle designs.

But as this is my first speaker I have built, if you have any technical questions please read the original designers notes here on the forum, he has uploaded a PDF with all info you could possibly want!
The crossovers and wiring is still not final, just so you know.

Excellent work Jakob! These look fantastic. I bet they sound fantastic too, I would love your comments about the sound.
@kd4ylq It looks to me like Jakob is using active crossovers and the passive that you see is only the small number of components needed to complete the design.
@Balthazarp it looks to me like you made a "pure dipole" rather than U-frame which means they start rolling off at around 80Hz rather than 50Hz, so they need a stronger bass boost than my original design. Depending on how loud you want to play your music, they may only go down to 30Hz or so.
Also, in my design I added a 6 ohm resistor to the front tweeter and increased the tweeter volume on the DSP. That raises the SPL of the rear tweeters which adds a little more spaciousness to the sound.
I have attached the MINIDSP FLEX8 CONFIGURATION FILE that I am currently using for these speakers. I use the Flex 8 now rather than the 2x4HD.

The drivers are clamped down with 3mm steel pieces. You can see them clearly on the top woofer. I like the clean look from the front with no screws. Ah, I misread, the boards are secured by 4 30x30 L brackets that are 50mm long in 3mm steel. I thought about gluing for a cleaner look but I thought it would be nice to be able to modify or switch baffles more easily.Did you eschew the original biamp active DSP approach for any particular reason? how did you secure each driver baffle board to the support framework? Geart job! (I'll bet they sound awesome).
Right now I run them with the original crossover but I am using a c-dsp8x12 from minidsp instead of a 2x4hd, so no fir filters. But I have a 2x4 laying around so I am going to try that next. I have a bunch of spare amp laying around aswell so I might try a fully active version aswell.
As I said this is my first ever speakerbuild so I built it as the orginal plan (minus wings for the woofer) as a start. So I knew it would be a good start before experiment.

I absolutely love the sound. So dynamic, high detail but still soft and non fatigue. Super strong center image and wide Soundstage. The best speaker I have ever heard. I was at a hifishop and listened to the Avantgarde trio system that retails at aprox 300k usd here in Sweden but both him and I thinks this sound better.
I am running a 24 db boost at 20hz, so a bit more than you. And I am running the woofers with a 2x22w tube amp and I only started to hear a little clipping after 5 hours of constant listening and maybe twice as many beers haha. So it's really not a problem. I live in an apartment so my neighbors are probably happy that I can't push the system more.
