UGLY Looking Amp! - but good working

Be terrified, my Ugly JLH amplifier, i call him "The Judge"

As i never needed to put the fan that have the hole prepared to it, also have the adjustable DC supply to motor speed control...but i used to switch it on for some seconds...time enougth to realise that the other one i was comparing was worst.

So, never needed to work too long....difference was clear always.

regards,

Carlos

I've got one

I pulled this amp out of the shed at my uncle’s place a few months ago. It is my first DIY amp, as you can see from the pics it was pretty much made from bits I scavenged from old TV's, a valve radio chassis, bits of wood, scrap bits of aluminium etc.

I built it back in 83 (I think) but I kept blowing it up because I didn't realise that the back of the trannies were live 🙄 then I found out about nylon bolts and mica washers 🙄

It had passive tone controls originally, but I got rid of them because they reduced the levels too much.

The amp was only 10W/channel but served me well for a few years, and then later my cousin 🙂

The bit in the plastic bag was the preamp for the "tape deck" I had, which was a butchered Hammond organ tape unit, which I "installed" a stereo tape head in :smash: I had some shielded wire running straight off the head and into the rca plugs on the amp 🙂

edit: oh an in case anyone is wondering <cough> <cough> the reason there are 5 RCA plugs on the back is because two were the speaker outs, two were for the tape in, and the third was for my clock radio which I ran a lead out of 😉

Tony.

This man, Halojoy, was a very interesting guy, a complicated one to understand, as

All big Gênius is complicated to understand.

Someone that made a enormous empty hole in this forum... clear i can see that he was the most brigth star that we had here.

Unfortunattelly some agressivity, or , the defense or some ideas, oposite from forum management rules, made them disappear from our relations.

I could not have it in this forum, as i arrived latter than the day he depart, but i had some contact with the guy... very intelligent and sensitive, hi intellectual quocient with some emotional instabilities.

Now, sucked by an Universe Black hole, impeached to enter with another name, because his own personally character rules, are brigthing around Andromeda or Cygnus 342 Constellation, for my Sadness and forum "general reduction of fun".

A tragedy inside my Soul...Kennedy murdered, Mahatma Ghandi dead, Halojoy out of our forum...tragedies.

regards,

Carlos

I win this competetion easily with my super duper ugly amps:

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

As you can see, Halojoy was the only one that could make people publish their shame

constructions.... a relaxing thread, without pride or any negative human feeling.

People beeing normal people, beeing natural, showing their intimate realities, not trying to make equal or better than the factories can make.

I published....no one posted a single image... i cannot polish Halojoy shoes!

So, as you can see....halojoy was a great guy!

He could wake up the most friendly human feelings, the one that could put all of us around the fire to have a friendly conversation.

Carlos

Hi Carlos,

maybe people didn't think your amps were ugly 😉 I had another look and whilst they aren't the prettiest amps I don't think that they are that ugly, I really like the heatsinks 🙂

The box is pretty ordinary though 😉 but everyone knows that the carlos amps will sound good, if they don't they will get the 12 guage 😉 (both barrels no doubt!)

besides someone who builds so many amps, how could you have the time to make them look nice 😀

Tony.

Wintermute and Danko

Wintermute - Thanks!, the wooden MDF case with heatsinks inside are a JLH that use a fan over it, sucking air from down holes... that JLH used TIP41C, 6 units in parallell.

Yeaaah! Wintermu... sounding good, not to shot that one! hehe

Danko - Very good, a real work we do, some normal work to produce sound, not to produce exibition show, or to compete with factories...i think this is fair and reasonable.

I love this old thread, the guys that invented that is a very intelligent man, sadly, a very difficult and complicated man.... those Gênius......

regards,

Carlos
