THIS is certainly an "UGLY AMP" Made from scratch, but it does work suprisingly well for an experimental. The other day I had it cranked up and connected to one of my KLH 15" 's and played some Sublime, Doin' Time, and when the bass hit, my clock on the other side of the room fell off the wall, hit the floor and broke!🙁 Didn't distort though😀
Anyway, the ugly power supply...

I used 3 pairs of TIP141/146's because the SOA isn't great for these. I got them because they were cheap and I figured I might blow some of them "experimenting", and the TIP141's are fakes and have an even lower SOA.😡 I plan to upgrade them to 2 pairs of something better in the future. But for an experiment, it works fine.

Ugly amp.
I get a real kick out of this thread. Keep it up! We all do things differently to the same end. Lots of grass roots logic in ugly amps. How about an ugly service room! This was my shop ten years ago. Notice the flex ducts, I had a room air conditioner on top of the room since my landlord would not allow me to cut any holes. I fed it through the drop ceiling. Made a lot of ugly stuff on that bench though.......

Most ugly amp!
I've built several amps and speakers over the years, here's what's left of my first, built in 1967 - I got started young:

I built several nicer amps as the years passed both kits and completely from scratch. The best amp had a minor failure, long story, but I ended up at college without a power amp in 1976 - good thing I don't feel as old as these dates suggest. I built this junk amp at my desk, mostly during the first 3 days of orientation at school, my friends found the chassis outside the school Physics lab. I didn't even have to drill any holes! The first channel worked right away, second needed some debugging. Here's my ugly 50W/ch amp, it never failed, I think it's the most ugly amp - but it worked!:

People would ask - is that thing really making the music, you built that thing?

PedroPO wins - no contest
C'mon, Pedro's the king, man! (see Page 4)
Is it my imagination or is that masking tape used for insulation?
And how about that knob, man, - looks like he pinched the top off a relish jar and coated it with a little metallic paint!

corbato said:This gotta win the most ugly amp award here. 😎 A 6BQ5 affair which sounds heavenly. Spent very little money - mostly on the passive components. Everything else was salvaged. Working fine even now.
I like Corbato's best post number 88, that warm rustic antique green look!
We should vote for the "Most Ugly Amp", or Nelson could be the judge, or a panel of distinguished judges!
Thanks, Hanzwillem! Your amp looks fine, like a prototype.
im starting to think i should have taken more pictures of my original cardboard style gainclone. it was pretty damn ugly.

As long as we are looking for the ugliest amp, how about an award (golden grenade?) for the worst or most expensive bench blow up? I am sure we all have horror stories to share. Got a nice bruise on my forehead once from a capacitor can that exploded off a board! Possible new thread? regards, Steve

yeah, my vote goes to him also. This was by far the most ugly amp. Brand new looking tubes on a chassis that is too ugly to exist 😀 Good work!

Can we nominate someone who has not posted themselves? There are a couple of real winners in the car amps section!
This is a picture of one I built for a guy's Camaro. The power supplies and amps were set inside the channel of the heatsink. This was Anodized bright red, mounted on a piece of diamond plate, and put in the back window area. Unfortunately, do not have a picture of the finished product. I did all this without the aid of machine tools so all the sawing was done by hand (as in not straight!). It did push over 1000 watts into four ohms and sounded pretty good........ If you like Heavy Metal. Waiting to see what's next guys. Regards, Steve
