That's what i think too..or at least.. this is the excuse i use because i am a pig!
As i cannot make those things pretty, i discover my own formula to self convince myself.....do not feel yourself scandalized...as we use to fool ourselves all time long.
Not only unable to make those pretty works i use to see in our forum..... i think they are exceptions (better to me believe that!)...but also i have any motivation...any need to spend my time to make pretty work....pretty work will never sound pretty!....or at least there's no connection between beauty and good sound...also heavy amplifiers will not sound heavy.
During the time the "perfectionist" will construct a beautifull amplifier i will make 120 units...will listen to them, evaluating, having fun and will continue to believe that may exist another one better to construct.
The one that spent 120 days doing pretty work.... will need to believe..fooling himself, that is constructing the must perfect piece of electronics in the Universe...and the chance that he succeeded to construct the ultimate amplifier is very low....not to be confused with an idiot..some guys goes believing that they made the ultimate...because the other hipotesis is worst....hehe
And believe me or not.....i do not mind if you do not believe, but the guys that fool themselves..will keep this, as a true, even under torture..... alike a religion (But lets forget that problematic idea...cannot talk about this)
If the behavior of fool ourselves did not worked...how to stay with our "beautifull" wife showing her 55 years old face?
Also, to continue to have fun...i have to fool myself with the belief that may exist the perfect amplifier...and i know the perfect one will be alive sound....and alive sound is not an electronic reproduction.....so....both things do not leave together in the world to realities.....i will never find...because we cannot find alive sound listening electronics!..... but i go with my belief...when i think that the search of perfect amplifier is a foolish...i defend myself saying that i am an idiot...that the perfect one must exist..this way i continue hard working searching the end of the infinite.... the perfection in the non perfect world....but having FUN!

I will make the GEM once again....maybe Eddie's layout sound better.
And this way i will going and having fun.
Of course Eddie's layout will not sound better....the inductances and capacitances present there are not so different from other boards...differences only to instrument.
But i have to belief...at least not to bother the ones that has this belief.
I will make it pretty!!!!
hehe

yes, little scaring .. so much the same, from new brand: DeX Lineup
This little loudspeaker system of mine .. Bad ? ...... or Good ?
Ugly for sure, but how about quality!
Those who know Focal midrange woofers
will notice 110 mm kevlar driver
this driver you can not buy anymore ... but was one of the best,
ever ... from Focal in France

hummm...mine is a little bit less UGLY loking, because i have used a brush
But you can see how dirty is my tune duct....was made with 8 sheets of print paper...glued together and fixed with baby adhesive tape.
A 25 hertz tone was sent and the tube was going in till i could listen clearly the tone (not the mechanical movement of the speaker...nor the wind noise crossing the rounded duct apperture.
Them was glued with dirty PVC transparent cement...the same old glue we have used 35 years ago to Revell plastic toys that we bougth to construct as models.....
This is the back panel of an Industrial speaker...from a cheap system...
The back side....that was the original speaker front, was constructed with plastic.... that panel was attacked with a hammer and substituted with a 10 milimeters plywood glued with that white glue used to school works....captured from my young daugther.
Now a very flat speaker...as flat as many monitor speakers we can find.... with the flat unflat graphic glued into the front of back panel.
I have introduced a tweeter and the speakers are 4 ohms - 150 watts units.

Carlos

Here is the point to point "sophisticated" crossover
Now it is better constructed...the picture was made during adjustments using a microphone (with the graphic know) and a
cassete deck with analog meters...to capture and correct to flat
response captured with the microfone.
Of course the microphone peaks and gaps where considered...also the peaks and gaps of my "perfect diy speaker"
I can listen from 22 hertz into 15700 hertz...and those frequencies are beeing reproduced..... hummmm...less 6 decibels in the extremes.

Carlos

some beers and some laughs about the old days
we had at www.diyaudio.com
love you man

I feel myself lonely Lineup.... i think that guy, the Halojoy if visit forum, will
feel the same...there's not too much guys that can be able to make a really awfull work.
I think the "guilty" may be the computer..... graphics possibilities, pcboard programs....our printers helping some photographic work to copper boards.
The old artist work is finishing.....the progress is eating them...my beautifully awfull spider circuits are hard to find now a days.
The good fiberglass boards and silkscreen are making "professional" every board.... and the artist is now a days the computer.....buaaaaaah!!!
This one i made in a morning....was a Chocoholic Asia design that i have listened monthes ago....not more than 3 hours since the decision to make to be listening to his amplifier...of course...fast this way have to be dirty...very dirty...i could not wait the board dry after cleaning with kerozene and them soap and watter to make the image.

Carlos

I think that little amp
is not very ugly ... it is nice!
Very much like my creations 😉
what you think of this one... ???
in all its dusty appearence,
there may some small goodies I can use
I spent many hours slaughter and de-solder old circuit boards
even from PC stuff ... most is digital junk IC .. no good for audio
once in a while there are some good transistors ..
or maybe one LM324 quad op-amp
But this is the way. when have no job and only 1.000 USD
This one ugly .... YEEEESS 😀

How about this one Carlos?
Ugly?
not so ugly
(actually I love the craftmanship by the creator of this headphone amplifier
It was done maybe 8 years ago ...
From idea, paper & pen .. and to hardwire direct soldering.
My most advanced HPA ever.
Lot's of thinking and work did I spend.
But as usual, not so much money
.. when you have little, you learn how to live cheap ... VERY CHEAP

Ugly looking amp, topology check and proto. The input caps are 1uf polypropylene I salvaged from scrap junk power supplies and circuits. The red and black wires are the +/- 18V for the output EF stage, each channel is seperate. The input and VAS(output bias source) are driven by higher voltage, less current(~15mA), through regulator circuits that switch on or off, controled by 5V TTL....mute😀 Blue and yellow are outputs. Talk about slapped together, I used magnet wire for jumper wires...frankly I'm kinda flattered that it even works at all.
Works great and sounds great too!! As pointed out before, audio isn't video.(don't tell the tubies here
)

Each little black speck is a transistor. One channel is a mirror image of the other. Hopefully soon I can get some real PCB's made and hope it works. I suppose you don't know until you try.🙂 I will try to follow the design somewhat like this, consruction is quite sturdy with the stand-offs.

I agree, it is not the most classy looking amp I have seen.
That one of yours.
But still, this can not hide the fact
that it looks like it is very well built.
Clearly,
there is an idea and some thinking behind that construction.
🙂

And experience. As a cheap alternative to having a board made at a boardhouse for SMD's, solder bridging the connections and mounting the SOT 23 parts upside down as well as upside right(oposite pinout) on cheap Radio Shack general PCB's seems to be sturdy if you can get it connected together properly.🙄 Hince the mirror image. I have sacrificed qiute a few of these boards in failure but you can easily remove and reuse the components, at least the ones that cost more than a cent. 😀 reuse the solder as well.
