-GE 5-star 6201's (triple mica gray plates)
I looked over at the Simple P-P that is currently playing and the two 6201's are indeed GE 5 star tubes. I looked into the box that is full of loose 6201 tubes and they are mostly Sylvania but about 1/3 of them are GE 6201WA. Some of the Sylvania's are 6201GB (Gold Bond). I guess this must be their answer to the GE 5 star. All seem to work good.
If I recall correctly, the Simple P-P will require 12AT7's in the front end. Any suggestions for brands to look for?
I've been using 12AU7 tubes in my Simple SE (it's been working fine, any input George?) and my favourite by far is the used (old stock) Tung Sol that I picked up cheap. I have a few (also used) Cifte tubes that sound good as well. Fo some reason, the two Electro Harmonix 12AU7's I have sound pretty ordinary, if not just plain bad. I've got some NOS Tung Sol, RCA and GE 12AT7's on the way, and just as many NOS 12AU7's and 12AV7's.

I'm not George, but I'll add my two cents anyway. If you like the sound, then I'd say go for it. The 12AU7 should be just fine. Keep an eye on the heatsinks attached to the IXCP10M45S (the CCS). I'd expect they will be getting hotter with a 12AU7 than they would with the 12AT7 as the watts dissipated in the CCS will be higher (roughly 2.5 watts, vs. 1.5 watts).
Don't try touching them with your finger to check the temperature. They've got 400 volts on them!

Hey Ty, thanks for the input. I think the CSS modules should be fine, I've got a sink on them that's quite a bit larger that the ones spec'd by George (extruded aluminium, around 12x18x10mm) Don't worry, I definitely won't be touching them. And yes, the 12AU7's in my amp sound great to me.
By the way, after seeing some of the amps you've made and reading some of your posts around diyAudio started my love for the 6P3S-e tube. They're brilliant valves, sound fantastic. The only problem is that now the build of most tubes just doesn't seem good enough 😛
I'm so excited I can barely sit still. George I should send you a few dollars to pay for the traffic I'm clocking up checking your site every few hours ;P
Based on the successful sales of a new simple preamp from bottlehead, i suspect there is a fair amount of pent up demand and this amp should do well. Especially if it gets out before bottleheads stereomour.
Just wondering how progress is going on the Simple P-P.
We got "the" phone call, and set out on our trip on Tuesday. I loaded up the laptop with all of the stuff needed to work on the manual. I planned to work on it while Sherri drove but the weather was so lousy that I did most of the driving. We got to Sherris mothers house in West Virginia late last night. It is currently 40 degrees and raining, but that is a welcome change from the record breaking heat that we left behind in Florida (92 to 94 degrees every day).
I had to fix the phone line (outside in the rain) this morning to get the internet to work (too much hum) so I could check in here. I'll be here for a week or so before heading back south. The exact scherule will be determined by the cancer speciallists in Pittsburgh on Monday. My laptop will follow me and I will be working on the manual whenever I get a chance.

My current web hosting plan gives me plenty of bandwidth. I will post the progress right here as anything changes. I realize that I haven't updated my web site in a long time and I have all sorts of new stuff to post, but the Simple P-P is priority one right now. I have some new pictures of the Simple P-P boards to post, but I didn't get the time to post them before I had to leave on this trip.
God bless you. You shouldn't be working on anything amp related, considering your personal situation. Maybe it helps take your mind off things, and maintains your sanity. I can't appreciate what you and Sherri will go through in the next few weeks.
I'll enjoy seeing the Simple P-P when it finally does come to fruition. Hopefully I'll build one myself someday. 🙂

I spend a lot of time sitting around with nothing to do. I usually spend this time throwing my ideas down on PC boards. The last trip gave me the octal driver board, and the Dec 2008 trip allowed me to finish the Simple P-P board. This time it is instruction manual and website work, although there is this power supply board on my computer.......

This has been going on for almost 5 years. Sherris step father was diagnosed with a rare cancer 5 years ago and after an 18 month battle he passed away. Sherris mother was diagnosed with cancer 2 1/2 years ago and underwent about a year of conventional surgery, chemo and radiation without results. She was told that there were no further options. About this time I had six surgeries to remove cancerous tumors (they finally got them all). Needless to say none of us were very happy. This is why there was very little Tubelab activity in 2008.
Sherris mother enrolled in a series of clinical trials (human experiments) last year which have reversed the spread of her cancer, and seriously improved her health. The primary tumors are still present but showing signs of shrinkage. We now look at all of this from a different perspective. Mondays meeting and whatever follows can only provide us with more options, and maybe provide the data needed to save a few more lives in the future.

George is it, (?) and Sherri, I am truly sorry to hear of your ordeals. I lost my mom to Ovarian cancer when I was 29 (long ago but not so far away).
I'm in NE TN (Tri Cities Area).
I pray things go well for you.

George, our thoughts are with you all. When the clinical trials work it is truly something to celebrate! Best wishes.
George,
As all ways thought and prayers are with you, Sherrie and Sherrie's Mom. I am pleased to here that the clinical trails are working. My Dad was a clinical trial patient and was able to get about 2 more years with us, it was a true blessing.
While we are all anxiously awaiting your manual and the final release of the Simple PP none of us want, or expect you to do anything more that support your wife and her mother first. The projects you create for us are great but we are a second priority not a first. The way I see it we are second to your family needs.
Be well,
Alan

Goodness - didn't get to these last few pages - very sorry to ask inappropriate questions Tubelab about silly boards. Please forgive me. My prayers are with you.

Not a problem, silly boards are important to us all. I spent the morning in front of my laptop working on the assembly manual, while Sherri took her mom out to yard sales in the 39 degree weather. After a rest period we all went to the mall. We were shopping for about 3 hours until she decided that it was too cold to continue (36 degrees and raining), so we went home. This is a 70 year old woman who was considered "terminal" 2 years ago and didn't get out of bed for more than 15 minutes at a time for much of 2008.
Yesterday we went to a flea market where I scored a few LP's and a band saw. Tomorrow we will all go to church in the morning and they are going to some type of familly gathering in the afternoon while I sit at the computer.
I have managed to get in 2 to 4 hours of work on the manual on every day since I got here (better than when I'm at home). I have about 25% of it done now. It won't be completely finished here even if I had the time since I have discovered some mistakes in my pictures requiring a few to be done over.
I am hoping to have everything ready by early November, but there are obviously many variables that are beyond my control right now.
I am definitely on board for one of these boards!😀
I'm sure spending some time working on these projects is a bit of a respite from other worries in your life right now.
My aunt was diagnosed with bone cancer and given an "optimistic" estimate of 2 years to live. She went on to live another 15 years, baffling her doctors and breaking records. One of the best people I have ever known.
On a less serious note...
After much research I have resolved that a PP 6bq5 amp is exactly what I am looking for to power my Klipsch Forte's. I have searched high and low and your design has what I am looking for, including a tube rectifier!
Thanks for all your hard work, I know at the end of they day the profit margins on these projects are probably nil at best and these are "just" labors of love.
I am going to start assembling the iron to complete this project so that when the board becomes available I am ready!
