Theory of Planot operation.
I think the way it may work is by vortex shedding and cutting. If so, it would work with a circular rod too.
As the rod rotates in one direction it creates vortices which are shed off the surface. As it returns in the other direction, it cuts through those vortices. This then causes an outgoing pressure wave at the frequency of the rotation.
The rotational speeds involved for audio frequencies are quite high.
(The characteristic sound of a helicopter is caused by vortex shedding/cutting.)

Actually I was also a bit serious , as the sound it emerges comes from a rotating movement of the woodpiece. You can swing it at a lower speed and there is no sound when the woodpiece is not rotating.

Hmm, nothing we can discuss until (when/if) more information is volunteered.
The frustrating part for we forum members is that following a "big splash" made by post #1 the author retreated into secretive mode. We're more used to people interested in an open discussion of ideas. That said, the forum can be a tough crowd, akin to academics at a conference Q&A sesssion 🙂. The parallel with academics here is not drawn lightly, there are some very well read and experienced people here, by their very nature they are inquisitive about new ideas.
As it concerns the forum, the presentation of Planot arrived with a big splash in the first few posts, creating mush in the way of interest and expectations. Its a shame that the inventor could not share a little more information - there is plenty that could be discussed in general terms without endangering intellectual property. Enquiries to this end, especially in relation to such a unique idea should have been anticipated by the original poster, given the generally high standard of forum debates.
I suggest, gentlemen, that we suspend this discussion until there is new data made available by Daveis or his associates

As soon as I have meaningful data I will post it.
I am sorry some are disappointed with my timing.
Some facts...
1) My Web site was created for manufacturers not DIY'ers or the consumer.
2) I have posted here and on other discussion groups as a courtesy not as a strategy.
3) The delays in producing the next prototypes has been due to a family illness, my life in general, my inability to obtain materials and have things manufactured to meet my specifications, the holidays, money, etc. Note this is not an apology I just want to set the record straight in that I have made no promises to anyone concerning my time line, which at best is organic.
4) If all goes as planned from this point out, and it has not so far, then my goal is within two months that I'll have "a lot" of measurements of all sorts. I think even the most jaded measurement freaks will be happy. Manufacturers have so far been happy with the measurements they currently have and I will be releasing more to the public.
5) This will probably be my last post here. I think I said that once before.
6) I will be announcing a new discussion site, hosted by a friend, that will have a new PLANOT® P4 discussion forum. I hope you will join me there.

1-D modes are the easiest to calculate, but don't include a lot of the resonances that the sort of structure shown in the patent app (which is all we have to go by) would be prone to, especially torsional ones.
John Gaudreault writes in his patent that a movement of the Planot creates a positive pressure wave, opposite to Jelle´s theory of the negative pressure wave earlier in this thread.
Wouldn´t such an operation mode lead to frequency doubling? It also wouldn´t explain the pseudo-stereophonic effect John mentioned in a mail to me and Ziggy described as "weird spaceousness" earlier in the thread.

I can say that that even as a ''rough'' prototype as attempted on my side of the fence a while back clearly showed that the rotating rod, bar or whatever was being influenced entirely by the vibration of a yoke, ''double y'' voice coil that oscillated powerfully in a strong magnetic field between two neo magnets positioned above and below the coils.
This is the same arrangement(but not as precise) as the PLANOT design drawing depicted on the web page.
So, where is the snake oil, positive and negative pressure waves come from 🙄 ?
The ''weird spaciousness'' that I heard was the omnidirectional sound produced by a tall vibrating balsa triangle in a live room - that's it........nothing unusual there. Other experimenters that followed found the same thing as well as the need to dampen the rotation with magnetic brakes or whatever.
I believe what John has is a highly refined version of this method of sound reproduction where the main sound output is purely vibrational up and down the carbon fiber triangular diaphragm.
I will remind everyone to look at the photo on the PLANOT WEB PAGE showing the speaker connected up in a living room environment. What do you notice first off????...............the extensive efforts made to isolate the driving mechanism/motor from the rest of it's surroundings - the base,floor etc.
I believe that if machined to high tolerances, use of the proper bearing necessary and rock solid coupling to the triangular rod and it's anchoring at the top, this thing will work. It will also work better than our crude experiments.
However, I still believe that it is just another distributed mode device until someone can tell me otherwise
