TPA3116D2 Amp

Hi ,

I am thinking to use a good poly film capacitor for bootstrap instead of the xr7 ceramic ones. What do you guys think.

The bootstrap caps get discharged slightly and recharged on every output cycle at the switching frequency. Their job is to provide enough energy to turn on the "upper" FET. ESL and ESR are very important characteristics in the filter capacitor of a (basically) switching power supply filter cap.

Does your "good film capacitor" have lower ESR and ESL than the X7R caps? (include lead length in this)

IMHO I agree with doctormord.

I agree, too. The only place where I prefer film caps is in the signal path. Because ceramics are sensitive to vibrations, i.e. they show microphonic effects like ancient tubes. This can be observed even at line level with coupling cercaps of several uF capacitance. And that is the only reason to use film caps - no magic at all.

Colleagues, rode a DIY TPA3116D2, but I can not produce 100W when I apply 24V. The circuit works perfectly up to 17V, above this voltage the circuit does not amplify. Acretido the cause is tension in Plimit, but I can not reproduce the same characteristics of EVM in my circuit.
Has anyone had a problem like this ??
How can I fix ??

YJblue is good example of filmcaps for bootstrap not functioning very well, probably distance from chip and or ESL, inductance, maybe risetime recharging, I don't know all factors why standard YJblue bootstraps really affect output audibly.

When same size smd film is used instead of smd ceramic, ESL will be same level, ESR should be even lower. Value of film bootstrap capacitor will be unaffected by outputsignallevel, the ceramic capacitor's value however changes with outputsignallevel. If value of bootstrap capacitor is relevant for mosfets functioning, a filmcap should give a superior functioning ampboard.

Yes there are capacitors not in signalpath, bootstrap powersupply isn't one of them, it filters outputsignal just like other outputfilter capacitors do.

Bootstrap caps are the power supply caps for the high-side FET gate drive in the switched output stage. They ride on the output at the switched frequency.

They get a slight discharge as the high-side FET's gate gets turned on and re-charged via a diode when the low-side FET is on.

Very standard.

Probably should not have been labeled as "bootstrap cap".

YJ BB OUtput Filter

Hello,

Was just wondering if the following capacitors would be suitable (or if i have made a mistake purchasing) these replacement caps for the YJ BB TPA3116 o/p filter ?

1. WIMA MKS2 0.68uf 63v
2. WIMA FKS2 1nf 100v
3. WIMA MKS2 10nf 100v

I am quite happy with how the board currently sounds, but curiocity has got the better of me.

Hi
I would like to do the PBTL mono mod.
I have found instructions at Mod a TPA3116 amp for Mono Mode - Simple Media Networks, Inc
Having rummaged around my parts box, all I can find are these 1uf 63v caps. Can I use them? Do I need to pay attention to polarity?
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

The author of the attached link uses these square ones. I am not sure of the difference.
