TPA3116D2 Amp

I am building a very small enclosure, which forces me to have on woofer handle all LFs from both Left and Right channel. Originally I bought a TPA3123 AMP off ebay (Won it in an auction for $11, had to give it a shot) - link .

I am not satisfied with it, even after I replaced the large caps, and some of the other components. Unless anyone has experience improving this amp I may forgo it and grab the pre-built TPA3316D2 from Ali-Express, and try and mod it (link).

Does anyone have any experience with the TPA3116D2 board from AliExpress and good mods for it? It has allows you to adjust the cross-over frequency as well as adjust volume for bass, treble, and main. Surely it's not great, but as this board has discussed, it's cheaper to buy the pre-builds and modify.

I own several different 3116 boards and the only distortion I have heard is lack of 330pf and 10ohm filtering..Which cause sibiliance on some speakers. Stock bootstraps sounds terrible when close to max voltage. Everything else is just bad components or solderings. There shouldn't be any burn in time, it should sound good if your speakers match the output filter.. As closer you get to 25V the better bootstraps and psu caps you need. Otherwise the amp sounds constrained. Most of the"new" topics have been discussed on earlier postings. All my postings is only true at 21V to 25V. I've tried lipo's too, couldn't hear a difference between batteries, unregulated psu or switching psu. Not when good psu caps are soldered onto the chip. If you hear a difference something is sub par. When the 3116 have the most important mods you should be left with an amp without distortions and a lot of ample bass. Tonality is up to impedance and input caps. I hope this helps everyone considering buying this chip🙂

What did you do with 330pf and 10ohm filtering?
thank you.

This is the bootstrap snubber mod (assuming your board does not have these, some newer ones do) see appropriate section in the Wiki TPA3116D2 Boards - diyAudio

Thanks for the info! Digging through it all now, I see the 2.1 from Feixiang on there. There seems to be a new YJ 2.1 circulating ebay that is not on the list from post #2249. Most sellers claim it was just released in August and is an update from the old model (improvement or cost reduction...who knows).

My current case doesn't permit for the length of the YJ 2.1 boards, so I need to find a smaller board. Hence why I find the Feixiang 2.1 so interesting! I can only fit one LF speaker in the case so the amps with integrated LF crossover are very interesting! Even though it seems most people are not fans of the 2.1 Chinese amps.

I ordered the FeiXiang 2.1 board, once it arrives I am going to look at what mods are possible - if anyone has already run through mods for this board, please let me know. Danzz has been great over PM with some initial insights such as swapping out the OP-AMPS for LM4562's.

I lived in China and Taiwan for a while, while this was nearly seven years ago, I am still able to read basic Chinese. I translated their text descriptions. It doesn't always make sense, but I hope it helps others. Hence the share!

Just on the earlier discussion of linear vs SMPS PSUs. I came across this article https://hifiduino.wordpress.com/2012/12/14/hypex-ucd-180hg-and-connex-smps300re/

The Connexelectronic SMPS he is using us a +/- voltage 300watt one, there is also a single voltage 300watt one that would work well for the 3116. As I mentioned earlier I have a 800watt Connexelectronic PSU in my sub amp which works well.

So certainly looks like purpose built SMPS supplies are now available rivalling or bettering analogue and certainly smaller and cheaper.

To date all my 3116 amps have sounded better with a linear supply - do I go out and but a Conenxelectronic one Connexelectronic to compare - gotta say its tempting.

You could need some stamina to communicate directly to Cristi. He gets too many emails. Also he keeps warning shipping for non ebaysellers in China is horrible, takes very long, time after time he says he will only ship Fedex etc, shipping cost same as PSU, but then uses China/HK/Singapore and 45 days isn't unusual then. Sending him emails that you didn't recieve PSU will remain unanswered, he told you befor, and he gets too many emails to do anything else than read emails and reply to them 24 hours a day, he is not going to, he also stated more than once.

So best find a distributor to deal with, Hifimediy sells them too, others too. My 500RS has minimum 26V, 24V could be minimum new ones, I don't know.
