The Weather

This Chevy Chase, from "Animal House Christmas Vacation" uses his line from the department store in which he says "It's a bit nipply out":

With weather it is all relative…

Absolutely. What has surprised me after moving from Canada to sub-tropical southern Japan is how quickly I am becoming acclimated. Humans in general can tolerate, even thrive, in all weather extremes - but even at the individual level, the capacity to adapt is remarkable. It doesn’t take generations of natural selection, just a few months of discomfort.

Tonight, we're dealing with a nasty wind, producing semi whiteout conditions - road travel not recommended. Since neither my wife or I are going anywhere, that's not an issue. But tomorrow morning I'll get to see how passable the 1/4 mile long driveway is. Last week, after a similar blow the driveway was filled to depths of 6 to 12 inches with 'igloo' snow. (I'm Canadian, so fill the vehicles by the litre, drive kilometers, measure temps in centigrade, but still think in terms of inches and feet.) That means you could make a classic Inuit igloo from it. A human can walk on it and not sink in, or break through. And I did - walk on it. My snow plowing ATV would go 10 feet and stop with the blade full of unmoving snow. A shovel stabbed down creates big chunks you can pick up and throw. I'm so not looking forward to Saturday.

I always look forward to Saturday! Even before I had kids. But when the little boys started arriving in quick succession, and on a Saturday morning with bacon and pancakes...nothing better and wifey kept in the sack until noon!.

We are going to have another week (at least) of temps below freezing. I put a little desk lamp underneath the bathtub plumbing and set it on a timer to keep the pipes above freezing. Thank the almighty for a store of inefficient incandescent bulbs!

The home we bought in Japan had been vacant for 2 years and before that it was inhabited by a very old woman who struggled to maintain it. This presented some challenges (very minor, actually) but I was delighted to find many light fixtures still housed functioning incandescent bulbs. They were replaced by LED bulbs and then carefully stored, of course.

32 here this morning. Snowed just enough last night to make the stairs going down from the back deck nice and slippery. Some sun breaking through on occasion, maybe stays, maybe melts. I'll have to "inch worm" my way down just to get the broom to clean it off. I greatly prefer working from the bottom up.

Broke the plastic bar of one push broom in half sweeping the slush of those steps yesterday. Right at the handle thread. Now I have two, sized a bit better for the steps actually, but I have to work by hand - no handle anymore.
